Kay, what?
This is what many of us have been greeted with while trying to change our usernames.
This is not acceptable.
Are we really looseing the freedom to make creative usernames?
Are they going to remove the "invalid" characters from the rest of us?
Just for a minute, think of all the usernames that are already taken.
Alternatively, think of the frustration that you feel when every username you could think of is taken.
Millions of name possibilities just disappeared.
We'd hate to see Gaia become filled with even more lackluster names.
There are those of us who like to appear literate by having brackets, or even a simple space in our names.
Do they expect us all to have names like bobismyname2341166?
I couldn't stand idly by, and neither should you.
I can't believe this was done without so much as an announcement.
Did they really think we wouldn't notice? XP
Honestly, if nothing else, at least give us back the spaces?
Seriously, just give us a little space. stressed

UPDATE:
As of now we have gotten our spaces
and underscores back!!!
The petition will march on in hopes of
restoring the username regestration to
it's former glory!
Thanks for the support and keep up the good work!

Hi Kene,
Sorry for the confusion, but the name enforcement is only for new registered accounts only. For those who have spaces in their names, there will be a chance to change your names for free when the time comes, and it might or might not be mandatory.
So don't worry about using the name change function. We'll keep everyone informed moving forward.

Hello everyone,
I'm afraid that we have failed to communicate the idea well enough with everyone, mainly because we know that usernames are something all of our users hold dear, and we want think things through before we announce anything regarding changes in usernames.
There were lots of reasons why we made this change, including important security reasons and the possibility of interesting new features. We think that the good outweighs the bad, and we hope that people will not be too frustrated that their names might not be compatible with new features.
At the same time, we know that username is something that is very dear to everyone, so that's why we're still deciding on how and when we'll ask people to change their names. The day will come eventually when we ask people to change their names, but there will be ample notices before the request is made, and the name change might be totally optional. For now, we're still trying to see how we can make changes on our server code so that we can allow names involving spaces and symbols, if a user chooses not to change his or her name.
Since a lot of Gaians are worried about this issue, I'll be making a small announcement in Site Feedback. Hope it'll clear things up even further.
As usual, your comments are vital to Gaia's growth. We'll continue to frequent your posts, and we'll continue to build cool new things, or fix any problems based on your feedback.

Hi everybody,
There's been a lot of concern and confusion over the recent change in the way usernames are handled for new accounts, so I'd like to clear it up as much as possible.
From now on, new usernames will only be able to contain letters, numbers, and hyphens. These changes only apply to people who are registering new accounts or changing their existing usernames.
We know that your Gaia usernames are very dear to you, and that they're a part of your personality on the site, so any decisions about this are very difficult. For the foreseeable future, people who already have spaces or special characters in their usernames will not have to change their usernames. If there ever comes a time when we require people to change their names to fit the new system (it's still under consideration whether or not it will be totally optional), we'll give ample warning in advance, and we certainly won't charge any gold for name changes.
There are a whole lot of reasons why we're making this change to new usernames. There are major security concerns and technical issues that come from having special characters in usernames, and it also puts a huge limit on the kind of features we can have on the site.
To put it simply, our old usernames just aren't compatible with the rest of the internet. While we can't promise that we'll make these features available any time soon, changing our username system will allow us to make subdomains (like having http://yourname.gaiaonline.com/ go to your profile), e-mail addresses, instant messaging, and much more. Again, we might not create these features any time soon (or promise on making any of them), but limiting the special characters in new usernames will make a lot of things possible in the long run.
We apologize for not making this clearer in the beginning. We're still working out exactly how to proceed with this new username structure, and your feedback is very important to us, as always.

We will be able to have spaces in usernames. Strange as it might sound, it actually requires a lot of planning and work to have spaces yet have a system that is safe and compatible. We’re working on it now and I’ll keep everyone updated on the progress by next week. Thank you for all your feedback everyone.

Regarding features, as a team, we have always been split between building features from user requests, and building features that are brand new and Gaia unique.
Sometimes our decisions are based off responses from fellow Gaia members. When we talk to Gaia members, or when we browse through site feedback, we would hear about what items users like, and those requests would go in a list for item ideas. Similarly, we receive a lot of feature requests also. For example, a lot of users asked for being able to put pictures, music and video in their posts or profiles. Often those are needs that were created from common internet services out there, and certainly not everyone on Gaia are into that, but we would like to cater to those Gaians when enough requests are made. We try to listen, and react accordingly.
On the other hand, we have a lot of ideas on what Gaia should be and ideas on cool new things that makes Gaia more fun and unique. Those ideas ranges from events, quests, games, virtual world services, to other ways for users to hang out and do things together. Our goal is to be different than other sites out there, and let everyone know that there's always something fun and different happening on Gaia.
We try to keep this balance of listening to everyone, while coming out with unique ideas of our own. I hope that everyone will understand that we're reacting to your needs, as opposed to trying to be more like some other sites out there. We're still trying to have more staff in building more features. Until then, please be paitent while they trickle through slowly.
