yar, been burning the midnight oil on a bunch of pieces at the same time over here,

these are all done when i got out my egg timer, and set it to ring in a n hour. and tried to get as much done as i could before it goes off... it kinda forces to me to speedpaint a bit, without worrying too much about making mistakes.. from there, if i like where the things are going, i'll work on them further, with one or two more speedpainting sessions, then from there, going on to complete the piece if i think it shows promise...

one hour logged into this one, having a lot of fun on this, hoping i c9uold get a foreboding mood going on this one, but still keep the character sexxy, and fierce, but have a scifi/fantasy twist mixed in as well. hoping to get this one before AX.

i can't say i like this one, but I'll add some grungy textures and darken this up a good bit more.. hopefully that'll save her, cuz i think i need a scifi bondage bimbo on the ol' folio
User Image

doodled him at Anime Boston, plopped him on the scanner for the time being.. 1 hour logged
(i also have a wip of this one in watercolors, which i entertain myself with during slow times in the alley, and to play with waterbrushes smile This ons a challenge for me because the color palette is very different from what I'm used to ^^;

might post something else this evening, cuz I've been trying to work real fast and cram a bunch of stuff in before a print order i need to make in ten days XD..

I have a question about the first piece. This is painter and not photoshop, right? How do you make a brush like the one used in the first piece? I can't even imagine how it could be done in photoshop because you couldn't get each of the five lines to go in the direction of the brushstroke. So question is how is it done in painter? Thanks in advance!

OH, you can do it in photoshop too, if you go to the brushes control window, look for the "angle" slider in the shape dynamics tab there
User Image

with painter look for the "rake" control in the big sloppy brush controls windowyy mess, and up the number of bristles.. its onlt available with some of the brushes though, ie,. the sable brush (if you have it).. its a paininthearse to build though, but if you do manage to get what you want, in the brush selection toolbar on the top right (unless you moved it) pull down the lil tabby and select "save variant" so you won't lose it, and cross your fingers that painter oesn't get all buggy and reset everything stressed

I'm also debating on whether or not I think the head is too small in the second piece. Dunno, what do you think?
more than likely XD.. i think theres also a big problem with the length of her upper torso as well, and to be honest, at the state i have it now (worked on her since), i think that i could crop out her abdomen and crotch and call it a day, cuz thats all that came out good on her, despite the fixes blaugh if i'm in the mood i'll post her current state later, though she'll more than likely be scrapped

heres's a ghetto budget "hot to make a photoshop brush" tute i jus' slapped together.. remember, you could use aaanything, ie, scan/photograph a sweater, desaturate it to b/w, select it, crop, smootht eh edges or whatever, make a brush <3

Anywhooos, i was hoping to ge this done last night, but i was plumb tired, so today, after napping regularly (i think i got a mild case of con cruds) i've ben tearing away at this..

Been wanting to completely overhaul an old mustydusty speedpaint i did of gradius a few years back, as the old ones poopie and low res, and i was really wanting to have a lil Gradius hangng in my con folio...
so um.. heres the old one, its age really shows ^_^;
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v87/shmupo/wips/vicviper.jpg

this is a detail of the wip, some elements i changed compositionally, and put some time actually working on the environment.. tried to resize the whole thing down to 650 px or so, but the details are lost and the whole thing goes to poopie when i do.. (working on 3300X2550 canvas atm
User Image

I made a bunch of starfields a good while back, and often will dig em out and use portions of them for the bg's of some of my scifi stuff to speed up time, and the stars in the bg is a bit of one that i resized and added in.. I'd normally mute them a good bitm, but i'm aiming for the vibrant fun old school shooter cover feel.. yeah Konami.. you sure knew how to make those gradius covers mmmmmm<3

the rest is being painted with custom built brushes i've made. as the standard round brushes and such are to "clean" for my tastes :

vic will be added once i settle on the bg, and then on to cosome colorwork (that i hope i won't mess up to badly XD)
OOOOO cool borders!!!!!

Okay, with that out of the way, time to move on to the more current post i was plannin'..

the gradius one in the last post is completed, with the inclusion of color, Vic viper, and a lil flip n rotate as suggested by a friend to give ti a more skin-o-teeth dodgey effect.. it can be found on mah' DA page ^^

http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/57496540/

now, onto the current wip..

this ones a continuation of one of the pieces in earlier post, and i'm breaking it down a lil to share the process.. I'm working relatively fast here, cuz i really need to get this and about 2-3 other pieces done by around the 19th in order to place an order in time for them to arrive before i head off to Anime Expo.. so yeah, anything time saving i can and will use, (as well as much caffiene in various forms domokun

This is the current state of the next piece.. hell, i havent'even named it yet, so "spikey" it is for the time being XD.. tis maybe 3 1/2 hours of total work in..

i'm currently working on two layers, and this is the one i had gone and smeared up with the just add water tool on painter.. ui honestly liked the more rough feel of the hatchy lines, so though its getting obliterated, i'll be working more rough textures back into it as i move along ^^.. after doing that i bought it into photoshop, tinted the whole thing (can't say i like working with complete black & white unless thats the goal, as i will add blacks/greys in later if need be)
User Image

its really flat, so as an initial laying down of colors i added a layer, set it on what, overlay or something, then worked colors over it really fast to give it more tinting and to give me a better direction of where I'm aiming to go
User Image
sweet...O_O
okay, heres a couple pics of the wip.. i set my eggtimer for an hour of focussed work, and with a 5 minute addition to the timer cuz i had to pee, this is what turned of it so far..

continued to work some blening and brushing and stuff over the rest of this guys body, to work it up to match the rest of the envvironment.. i also decided to move the sword, as i have a couple ideas i want to do with it, and want to fix the boffed composition it had before
User Image

now, with that, i went back to the layer of color that was there, and tweaked it to accomodate the changes i made on the layer below...

i can't say i'ma huge fan of the purple trim at the bottom, but i'll find some ways to get aroudn it/fix it, and adjust the colors there so it doesn't stick out like a ripe zit.. (although i might actually incorporate that into other areas of the piece to balance it out 3nodding
User Image
few more hours in...
User Image

k, still at work on this piece, which i decided to title "darkness rising".. heres a closeup of his head ( gah, i never *did* name this guy ^^; ) but a lot has changed. while chattering with my fiancee to keep my brain occupied, i went and modified the elements that were really bugging me with the rest of the piece, some elements added/removed, modified etc..

theres still a good bit of work to do, and my goal of finishing this tonight is ULTRA slim (unless i manage to find a way to freeze time).. so yeah....
and this oldarse thread rises fromt he grave, cuz i actually have something(s) new that i'm workin on.. User Image
This was what i was working on while at Dragon*con this past weekend when I was there on Friday and Monday .. an earlier wip that was lost to the angry Painter gods who punished me for not saving often was calling.... finish meee.. finish meeeeeeee.....

aiming to have this piece depicting his wanderer/loner nature.. hm.. maybe some kind of path thing through the mountains or something equally loner/desolate/dunno XD
..and aiming to finish him in time for Anime Weekend Atlanta

yeah.... them pants gotta go.. thats what I get for painting at a rave at 5 in the morning while hopped up on Caffeine.. z0mgravepantslulz :p

User Image
High command has been a piece that I've been working on and off for the past year or so. mostly "off", but now "on" cuz i really want to get this damn thing DONE.. been a slow process, because i'm mainly designing it *as* i'm working on it.. the empty areas i haven't planned out much at all.. can't say i've even thought about it, but have been basically dealing with it when i get there

User Image
this one most friends consider finished, but i personally can't say i like it in its current state.. it was rushed toward the end to make it to the printers in time for Dragon*Con's art show and print shop, but I'm aiming to work on it more now that the conventions over... it looks tolerable in the reduced size that you see here, but i think it was prety haphazard in terms of color and the finishing..
yar, so this is something that i was working on while at my artists' alley table during Anime Weekend Atlanta a couple weekends ago.. it was really different, because I don't draw in front of people often, and i'm pretty happy i didn't eff it all up.

Was also nice to share some of the process with some folks who never saw digital painting live and had developed beliefs about the stuff being easy.. let folks who were curious try out my Wacom, and shared ideas and tips and stuff with folks who were just starting ^^

It was so successful in fact, that I'm gonna aim to do this more often! T'was fun (and a great way to kill time during the early morning & late evening when things were slow)
