Welcome to Gaia! ::

NO purple boxes:
EDIT: And I mean this in the term that it's random. There may or may not be purple boxes. I don't know that.

Guys, slow down here :]

First of all, we totally realize how fragile a economy can be and would never do anything so silly as to endanger or greatly alter its structure.

If the "generate any item" type item is implemented at all, it will be in a extremely limited fashion and most likely be one of the rarest items on the site itself and may very well be part of a quest that will require some patience. This isnt going to be anything like the current rares or commons, so please do not worry about everyone and their mother running around with precious older items ^^; The only reason for implementing a system like this is so that users can have a fun quest to actually work towards to make a one in a million attempt to get a very rare item, as a side activity to do while they may be saving up gold for that very same item ^^

Best wishes,

-L0cke

There you go. n_n; Your argument, and mine that they exist are demolished.
Sentimental value is something you feel, it shouldn't be changed by rerelease of items. :/

Maybe newbies aren't lazy, they just know for a fact that it is near impossible to raise that 10 Million Gold that a halo now costs.

Supply x Demand would not change drasticly, as more and more people would join Gaia, and want the item.
No, you're absolutely wrong. There's people, like myself, that can be considered gaia veterans. I joined in october. I worked my a** of for my nm minis. I have no other '03 donation items. It'd be great to be given a chance to get items that are almost impossible to get. Someone that joined today, staying on 24/7 and buying items low and selling high COULD NEVER make enough money to buy ports. As the person slowly makes money, the value rises. It's not fair because they didn't know about gaia earlier.
It could always cancel out, like for every Halo given out another account with a halo gets banned.

have you realized that too many peoples have already pointed out the exchange will not come to a crashing and burning halt? Have you seen the valid points that when you combine the actual chance of getting a purple along with the actual chance you get an item, out the actual chances out of hundreds of items?

No, I think the foundation of the exchange is better then that.

And not everyone is a newbie who wants a rare donation. Do you consider someone who joined since January and has been a contributing member of Gaian society, a newbie? Since he joined January and wants ports or a panda hat, or God forbid, a halo, is he still a newbie? Are we STILL catering to newbies?
I get the impression these purple boxes would be extremely rare, and also keep in mind that they'll contain one out of over a THOUSAND Gaian items. The chances of getting a donation item like ports, a halo, etc. would be VERY slim. I doubt there'd be a significant change in the rarity or price of these coveted items.
Oldbies had the oppertunity to get the item for free, or at least cheaper. Newbies barely don't stand a chance, and many people love to brag or laugh over that.

It's kind of ironic how a halo represents fortune and greed. They should make a Halo 2.0, make it untradable, and only give it out to people who are really, really, REALLY nice.
And, you're all thinking hypothetically, and so am I. It's just not fair to the older users who have obtained the items.
Sorry, I'm an "oldie" and I'm all for such an item.

Considering the sheer # of items on Gaia, the chance of getting a donation item itself would be slim, NOT enough to blow up the exchange. Halos are practically impossible to get now, bear hats are getting there.. and it will just keep going. This way, you at least have a chance at the older items. A very slim chance, but a chance.

But the older users obtained the items with a standing chance. Its very nearly impossible to save up enough gold to buy Mini Wings or the like nowadays, as the price keeps rising while you save. I too am an oldbie, I've been here since September. However, I didn't realize the benefits and whatnot of donating until January ( after a hiatus ). I'm all for this purple giftbox, as it gives EVERYONE a fair chance to get an item they otherwise would have severe difficulty obtaining. Besides, sentimental value and all that is determined by the user.

Eloquent Elder

Bullshit. There are probably three limited edition items in all of Gaia that I don't own and I have no problem with this. Let me lay it out for you.

#1. People leave. That's right. They leave without giving away or selling their old items. This creates significantly less of that item in the market and one day there might not be any of it left.

#2. Old items have become over-inflated. Even the newbies who work towards the goal of getting one of the older items will NEVER EVER be able to reach it. 5 mil for a rose corsage? Are you nuts? Meanwhile, nobody is willing to sell even if you DO have enough money. The new event will get these items back into circulation and stabilize the prices.

#3. Sentimental value. NOTHING can take away the sentimentality of your items. I donated last July and I will never ever give away my panda hat, even if it one day costs 5 gold, because it has meaning to ME. Sentimental value is not something dictated by monetary value. A friend could give me a pair of peasant booties and I would cherish them because he/she gave them to me.
I'm older than dirt and I say that someone else can have a panda hat, so long as they don't try to buy mine. Youngins these days need to know when not to put words in others' mouths. domokun

I prefer to think you're imagining the worse case scenario...

can't we all be realistic about luck and chances here? Or maybe at least optimistic?

Person #1: Oh! Yay! I got some portable headphones! What did you get?
Person #2: A hockey mask.... erm... um... of TEH DOOM! O__O

No, lets go back to reality. The line between pessimistic and optimistic is WAY too fine
I don't agree that the exchange will collapse, but I am against the idea of this new box.

Personally I see the 2003 donation items as symbols to those who were here for the first stages of gaia, people who have stuck with the site and been apart of its development. I'm proud to wear my mini's and tail knowing that I was here when they were released. That I was here and part of the first year and as such had the opportunity to get the items. I'm sorry that it may be unfair to the newer people who want them now, but the fact is they weren't here when they were released. I don't complain about not having a kodiac hat (the only item I truly would like to have) because I know I missed out. I wasn't here in July when they were released and so unless I get one as a gift or something, I accept that I will never have one and I completely think its fair that I don't...
Alright, let me write this in a first person perspective of someone who is an oldbie.

"I own a halo, because I actually donated for it, not even knowing Gaia would be nice enough to give me an item in return. The halo means so much to me. But every day, it saddens me to see another halo go up on the market because someone wasn't lucky enough to feel good about getting the item for a DONATION. Infact, it's irritating to know this, because some people out there that have the item because they truely deserved it."

Plus, I remember the admins saying they would NEVER rerelease anything that was a donation/event item, and would NEVER recolor anything.

So, are they honestly contradicting themselves on purpose, or forgotten the vow they've made to not do this?
