If anyone else feels the need to start one go ahead. Also, I'm rarely online since I've quit so if a mod feels the need to delete this don't bother PMing me just do it. You have my permission.

General FAQ for joining an Avatar Contest.

What exactly is an Avatar Contest?
For all of you that are new to Gaia and just figuring out how an avatar contest works I will explain it. Basically you pay an entry fee and are added to the contest. Once enough contestants have entered a winner is decided by voting using a poll or judges. However if you just joined Gaia a couple of hours ago I don't suggest you go straight into avatar contest because chances are peasant clothes aren't going to win it for you.

How come my avatar shows up as a red X on the list of contestants?
This happens when the person running the contest links the image directly from gaia servers and you change what your avatar is wearing. This is why I think a lot more people should host the images on a free site to avoid this problem.

I would suggest www.photobucket.com It is a free image host with a lot of monthly bandwidth and the whole purpose of that site is to host images.

Should I even bother reading the first post when joining an avatar contest?

YES! This is a must. Read over the first post carefully. Pay special attention to the rules. Watch for things such as PMing the person or posting in the thread so that they do not have to track down your avatar and know what trade is for as people tend to also have lots of other trades coming in from buying or selling stuff on the exchange.

What if I want to enter a contest but I don't follow the theme?
Well, some people may let you enter their contest anyways if you are really sure that this is what you want to do. However, it is quite unlikely that you'll win after all the theme is there for a reason.

What is frowned upon when entering an avatar contest?

*Do not try to bribe the judges. This will probably result in you being disqualified.

*Do not buy votes from random people. Though there is nothing to stop you from doing this it is unfair to others who can not afford to do so. It also makes the contest pointless as it no longer judges who has the best avatar but the biggest bank account. Therefore this is generally frowned upon.

*Do not submit a picture of your avatar in items that you do not actually own. This is unfair to others who work hard to get their items. This is also frowned upon and could result in you being disqualified from the contest if the hoster chooses to do so.

*Do not flame the judges/hoster/random people if you lose. This just makes you look bad.

General FAQ for hosting an Avatar Contest

What general information should I put in the first post if I am going to run an avatar contest?
Entry fee:
This is what people pay to enter it. Do not make it too high as people will not enter.

Prize(s):
This is something that I must stress. Prizes MUST be higher than the entry fee. Even if it's a third place prize. Calculate how much gold you will be getting from the entries and adjust prizes accordingly.

Voting method:
There are only two methods that voting can be done. Polls and judging. Decide which one you will use. If you are going to have judges make sure you know what criteria you are going to have them judging the contestants by.

Number of contestants:
Do NOT say I will keep taking entries until I have enough people. Enough people varies in the mind of each individual and it makes you look unorganized and makes people less likely to join.

Theme(if any):
Make sure you're theme is clearly identified and no one can be confused by it. Such as white avatar contest. Some people may interpret that as race as opposed to clothing color. Instead try white clothing avatar contest.

What additional information should be added if judging by poll?
If you choose this method to judge your avatar contest please specify how long your poll will last for. Either by time or number of votes. Also only 10 names can be put on a poll. So you must limit your number of contestants to 10. No matter how hard you try you are NOT going to get 15 names on that poll of yours. Also if you are going to you a poll do NOT edit the first post as this will delete the poll.

What should be considered if using judges?
If you are going to use judges make sure you're judges aren't newbies as newbies in general think everything looks good if it has expensive items that they desire. Judges who's avatars follow the theme of the contest is also a plus but not a necessity. However, if the contest is not themed I would not use judges who all have, for example, a nightmare theme as they might be more likely to vote for someone with a nightmare themed avatar in the contest.

What if I can't get enough people to join?
This has happened to me on several occasions. There are two options in this case. You can either stay determined and keep advertising. Or refund the people who have already entered. There is no shame in either.

What is frowned upon when hosting an avatar contest?

*Do Not Type Like This(capitalizing first letter of every word). It is quite annoying to most people.

*The same goes for TYPING ALL IN CAPS!

*Do not collect entry fees and then run off with the gold. This is a bannable offence!

*Do not abandon your contest. ESPECIALLY if you have contestants already entered. Bumping once a day is NOT enough to have a successful contest unless others are bumping the thread for you.

DO NOT EVER enter a simulated avatar into an avatar contest, UNLESS the contest specifically states that you CAN, or if it is a contest where you are supposed to enter simulated avatars. It is considered unfair and cheating in the contests where they is not allowed. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
