Onuris wiped the sweat from his brow as he let the mattress fall to the floor with a soft thud. Since Rei appretiated Japanese culture best, he had chosen a soft mattress to lay on the floor in a typical Japanese fashion. Of course he secretly had his doubts about beds that lay on the floor, but he kept them to himself. After all, when one committed themselves to another person, sacrifices were bound to be made.
<Are you sure about this?> Anubis inquired as he jumped on the mattress and made himself at home.
Onuris sighed and flopped backwards on the mattress, almost landing directly on his companion- fortunately Anubis was just jostled as his mass hit the cushion. "About what? Moving out? Staying with Rei? Having children? Becoming human? Take your pick."
<Usually I am the voice of reason that makes you insecure,> Anubis snorted. Behind his facade of a calm, cynical, and detached creature, he was worried.
"What am I doing, Anubis?" He sat up on the mattress and stared at his splayed legs, as if their toned musculature held the answers to all his questions. "I was a guardian goddess of women, I was a woman, for thousands of years... and here I am, reborn as a man chasing the romantic notion of love and about to commit myself to mortality. Even the Christian god would have doubts."
<It's a once in a lifetime chance, admittedly,> Anubis replied as he walked over to lay next to Onuris instead of hogging a good 2/3 of it behind him.
"Many of the others, I have heard, are becoming ancients." He shrugged. "I call it a seed of doubt... I just... It's not just me I'm committing to mortality, it's Rei too."
<She's a big girl. She's lived quite a long time too, remember, and can make her own decisions I assure you. Besides, she's got that burning chicken following her oh so diligently.>
"That
phoenix will be living here soon enough."
<You know what it's like to go back, to try again, and even with the best of circumstances you'll live an eternity with mortals ignorant of you and your existance.>
"But it's the power to change things, Anubis, not for me, but others! Who will save the little boy crying because he's hungry, or the infant girl dying from a crippling disease? How... can I turn away from them?"
<What happens if you don't?>
Onuris was quite for a moment, giving the notion more thought if only because he knew that Anubis thought more deeply about things than he. Both in the last life and this one, Onuris could be a little impulsive... if he hadn't, he wouldn't have been reborn. "I know... the people become dependent on me... and then they survive not on their own, but only with some grace that they use so they will not have to take care of one another."
<It's your choice... but if you change your mind, I keep the house,> Anubis cooly retorted as he jumped up and decided to survey the downstairs. Even he could see he wasn't getting anywhere... Onuris had to do things himself.
It was a hard adjustment, in truth... to go from believers making all your decisions to suddenly being your own person. Even if he was so powerful as to make all his decisions and save the people of the world... would anyone be happier? He would never be able to do enough for the people and soon they'd be dependent on him, and surely he would be blessed with children.
He knew his answer, but that didn't make it any easier.
