This is Fyre's Mendel SL, and only she should be posting please. If you would like to learn more about the Mendels, visit the thread here.

> 12/22/04 - The mall, the subway, and the crowded city streets all seemed to get relatively positive reactions - I suppose Hydrogen is a people person. The garden and the roof seemed to bore the vial to tears, had it eyes. The tube seemed to be excited in all the parts of the films that involved action - though it seemed to enjoy the absolute chaos of the battle scenes in the Lord of the Rings the best rather than the beautiful fighting in Hero and the rather lengthy special effects of the Matrix. Harry Potter seemed to bore the Mendel. Princess Monoke seemed to just confuse it. As far as music goes, the Shins, Blur, Nora Jones, and Wagner all seemed to appeal, with a relatively neutral response to Blind Guardian. Wide music tastes, apparently.
- Your Mendel emerged in a burst of black-orange powder! Your care of him added +3% to some stats.
> 12/19/04 - The control tests had very little effect on the vial, if any. The gas simply swirled about, happy as a clam inside its tube. It seemed to react to your presence with a bit more swirling, but aside from that there was little change observed. As for the temperature, Hydrogen seemed very upset by the cooler ones, but the warmer it got, the happier it appeared. Yellow, red, orange, and black all received extremely positive results whereas blue, green, purple, and white were all extremely, extremely negative - one could daresay that the tube appeared angry that you had put it in such poorly colored environments. Strangely enough, Hydrogen paid no particular attention to the sound, though it seemed to enjoy the sound of - oddly enough - traffic the best.
Looks like you've got a bit of a weird one.
12/11/04 - Hydrogen was delivered to you!

Personality: Hydrogen is a strange little Mendel. He's extremely volatile and prone to strange outbursts, be they rage; or rants; or lavish demonstrations of affection. He seems to go from one end of the spectrum to the other very quickly, and tends to cling to ideals far too closely. Also, Hydrogen can be a remarkably sensitive little bugger. Best to be careful around him.

Preparation for the first run of tests on the vial has been completed.
Due to the nature of the 'element' and the inability to carry out these tests in a completely controled enviroment, extensive control studies have been done, to allow for a more accurate reading of the results.

Control test:
The vial was placed in a room of the average household temperature of the home it will be staying it. It was then observed in this environment with no stimuli other then the ambiant sound and temperature, and the presence of the scientist being applied.

Observation time, 30 minutes: it was determined that this time would be long enough to give an accurate span of various possible external sounds, temperature changes, etc.

Results: unrecorded at this time

Date: December 15th
In the hopes of gaining to most conclusive results possible, a series of basic tests have been devised and seperated into series relating to various sensory inputs. 'Taste' and some obvious aspects of 'touch' have been omitted for reason that should be imminently clear. These basic tests should give the research basis for further tests to be fine tuned towards the specific subject.

Touch - temperature tests
The vial was subjected to temperatures over a varying range with 'room temperature' being set as the middle point. Care was taken to avoid creating enough heat to allow the subject to ignite, or a rapid enough change in temperature to endanger the subject.

Results:
RT (room temperature) +10 degrees:
+20 degrees:
-10 degrees:
-20 degrees:

Sight - color tests
Vial was placed in environments toned with a variety of colors. It occupied each space for a span of 5 minutes, or until aggitation required its removal.

Results:

Sound - basic environment tests
Vial was played a selection of sounds chosen for their difference in quality of sound and enviroment. This test should give the basis for later tests regarding more complicated sound structures such as music.

Following the basic sensory tests, a series of second level tests will be performed, taking specific instances of 'pop' culture in an effort to further judge Hydrogen's personality development.

Locations:
The mall:
The garden (location - my back yard):
The subway station:
The roof of the Durem building (a very tall building):
The city street:

Films:
"Hero"
"The Matrix"
"Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban"
"Lawrence of Arabia" (possibly only the first bit, should the reaction be negative)
"Princess Mononoke" (color tests suggests this would be the prefered Studio Gibli film)
"Once upon a Time in the West"
"Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring" (possibly continuing the trilogy if reaction is positive)

Music:
(due to lack of reaction to sound tests, music testing will be shortened for efficiency, with a minimum of genre's being screened in very brief segments)
Bands tested:
"The Shins" (indy/rock)
"Blur" (indy/rock)
"Enya" (new age)
"Blind Guardian" (metal)
"Nora Jones" (blues/country)
"Wagner - Ring cycle" (classical...only a small sampling for obvious reasons)

Hydrogen: the Element
Atomic Number: 1
Atomic Symbol: H
Atomic Weight: 1.0079
Electron Configuration: 1s1
Atomic Radius: 78 pm
Melting Point: - 259.34 ºC
Boiling Point: -252.87 ºC
Oxidation States: 1, -1</center>

- Hydrogen creates a flame of bright yellow when ignited.

- Hydrogen is estimated to make up more than 90% of all the atoms -- three quarters of the mass of the universe! This element is found in the stars, and plays an important part in powering the universe through both the proton-proton reaction and carbon-nitrogen cycle. Stellar hydrogen fusion processes release massive amounts of energy by combining hydrogens to form Helium.

- Although pure hydrogen is a gas, we find very little of it in our atmosphere. Hydrogen gas is so light that, uncombined, hydrogen will gain enough velocity from collisions with other gases that they will quickly be ejected from the atmosphere. On earth, hydrogen occurs chiefly in combination with oxygen in water, but it is also present in organic matter such as living plants, petroleum, coal, etc. It is present as the free element in the atmosphere, but only less than 1 ppm by volume. The lightest of all gases, hydrogen combines with other elements -- sometimes explosively -- to form compounds.

- Liquid hydrogen is important in cryogenics and in the study of superconductivity, as its melting point is only 20 degrees above absolute zero.

- The ordinary isotope of hydrogen is known as Protium, the other two isotopes are Deuterium (a proton and a neutron) and Tritium (a protron and two neutrons). Hydrogen is the only element whose isotopes have been given different names. Deuterium and Tritium are both used as fuel in nuclear fusion reactors.

NO ONE! (at the moment)
There is silence, as the tape starts to play, then the sound of static and background noise.

"Scientific Log: Supplemental thoughts

The 20th of December, 2004.

First Entry regarding the 'Mendel project'.
It seems to have become a regular trend with laboratories of late to farm out their tests to independant contractors rather then deal with them all in house. I have paid a fairly good sized fee to gain the privilage of working with the Mendel Project.
Any experiment that will ultimately produce a sentient being is a touchy thing. There is great potential for very problematic results, and no matter how much care one takes - in essense one will eventually have to let the subject go their own route regardless of how one feels about it.
As the properties of Hydrogen as an element are well documented and tested - I am essentially performing personality tests in this case.

Some days ago I performed the initial control test...Dec 12th...note the paperwork is filed under that date...It was the simple task of observing the vial at length within the base environment of my office. Oh I should note that I will not, for this subject, be using my husbands lab....for various reasons. I took temperature readings, as well as decibal readings of the background noise volumes. Of course the key will be...."

The sounds of one baby crying...then another...filter through over the tape, and there is the sounds of what might be a sigh, and then a bit of static as the tape player is paused. A moment of complete silence follows and then the background sounds return along with the speaker...

"It will also I suppose be necessary to record the vials reaction to the twins crying...I may have to have them out with a sitter for later tests. Where was I..."

Papers shuffle in the background of the recording.

"Oh yes...the control test. Data and results compiled and filed under date.
Following the control test...on...Dec 15th I believe...yes, the 15th, basic personality reaction tests were begun. The final series will be completed today - as they were to involved to complete in a single session.
Session one, was a series of tests regarding room temperature. All tested temperatures were of no greater or lesser an extent then could be occupied by a normal human comfortably - and care was take to avoid sudden changes that might cause more then mild discomfort to the subject. Care was of course also taken to avoid any situation that might ignite the Hydrogen base of the Mendel in question. The vial being sealed is helpful in that case, but extreme heat or rapid increases might ignite the substance within the vial itself. It was tested at 10 and 20 degrees above and below the recording room temperature from the control phase of testing. Data is filed under "Basic Sensory: Temp."
The second test took the majority of a day to prepare for, and took place on Dec 17th. Small environments were built within which the vial might be placed, that were painted a single color. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet/purple were tested individually - as were black and white. Reactions will be compared to some basic personality tests published, regarding theories of relations between color preferences and personality.
As this is being recording, prepatations are being made to run the final Basic Sensory test, however it requires an audio output device, so personal thoughts will be recorded after the fact in a later log. In a relatively quiet location, the vial will be played a series of basic environmental sounds both mechanical and natural, and its reactions will be recorded. There may very well be no real personality test result equivalent for this particular experiment - but I admitt I'm really quite curious about it. The recordings to be played are as follows: bird songs, traffic, running water (natural, a stream I believe), construction ambient, wind in leaves, mechanics shop (car) ambient. Data will be filed under "Basic Sensory: SND" ."

There is the sound of movement, clothe against clothe, and a small click...then silence.
There is a loud thump, and the sounds of rummaging around and muttering on the recording, as the mircophone is knocked over and then set back up.

"Scientific Log: Supplemental Thoughts

The 22nd of December, 2004.

I have been debating with some curiousity the results of the color test. Specifically the odd inclusion of black in the vial's obvious preference for warm tones. It is rather lucky that the house is decorated in a strange combination of Ogre's things and my own: warm bright colors, and voodoo paraphenalia.

Based on the basic tests, a series of more or less specific tests (that seem, in truth, terribly subjective in all honesty) have been devised. At this point its a matter of testing preference and taste.
Some time was spent transporting the vial to various outside environments - for the purposes of both testing and ... well one might say early educational development. The vial was exposed to more urban environments - the subway (which was tricky, but people do seem to avoid bumping into the person holding up a vial and looking decidedly abnormal), the mall (although a number of stores gave me very annoyed looks), and the roof of a fairly sizable building (which for some reason, was easier to manage then the former two). I had also intended to do a very short stretch of the art museum - but apparently a sealed vial of unidentified colored substance is not welcome within the museum, and I didn't get much past the lobby.

The second test regards cinema. A basic test of the sort of stories and situations the vial prefers. Over the next few days (as I certainly don't intend to watch that many films in one day) various films will be tested. I intend to shorten the procress by turning off films the vial seems to immidiately dislike - or skipping past parts it shows a distaste for. I suspect a negative reaction to "Lawrence of Arabia" - based on attention span...but I could be wrong. I also intend to test, "Hero" and heaven help me "The Matrix" (which I can honestly say I would rather not see again). The complete list is filed under 'Personality test: Film'. It includes one of the Harry Potter films, a western, an animated film (of the japanese variety), and the first of the Lord of the Rings trilogy (it would, I think, be unfair to show them to Hydrogen out of order).

Based on the vials reaction to sound - or lack there of, the second level 'sound' sensory testing was shortened to keep things efficient. Short clips of a fairly broad range of genre's of musical entertainment were played and the vials reactions recorded. For my own personal sanity, I admitt that I only used musicians I enjoy. 'The Shins', 'Blur', 'Enya', 'Blind Guardian', 'Nora Jones', and a small clip of Wagner's Ring Cycle opera were tested.
Results filed under "Personality Tests: music".

Thus far the results have been...interesting if not contradictory. Although obviously such tests are subjective in interpretation for the most part - the early tests don't seem to point to any cohesive 'type' that one could point to. Perhaps further tests will satisfy my curiousity...

Papers russle, and then the tape player is turned off.
Fyre's Notebook

I have stopped recording comments on the 'Mendel' project, as I fear I might offend Hydrogen...again.
He seems to be a fairly sensitive fellow. After his rather brilliant emergance from the vial (a brilliant emergance that rather explains his color preferences), he was quite full of questions. We were having a very pleasant introduction until he started asking about the tapes and papers...

Now, I am of the opinion that one ought to be entirely up front about these things. Otherwise its quite like not telling a child they are adopted until they're 'old enough to deal with it' only to discover that now that they are that old they are angry that it was kept from them. No one likes being lied to, even if they are the only ones thinking of it as lying.

That being said, I attempted, as best as I could, to explain the details of the Mendel project to Hydrogen.
He was....really rather upset by the whole idea I'm afraid.
Upset in a sort of ranting angry sense. He was very offended that I would 'experiment' on him.
It took a good deal of time to calm him down. I eventually managed to pacify him with the explaination that the 'experiments' I had done while he was still a raw element had merely been personality tests to ensure that I did not inadvertantly upset or offend him. (which he informed me quite pointedly that I had NOT in fact managed to do...although he seemed alright with the concept)
We did make up, however, when I showed him his "room". I think, seeing it, he was finally persuaded to believe me that I was thinking of him as a living-sentient being rather then a test subject. I have given him a cabinet in my office, two shelves high, with a stairwell I put in. I have rigged it electric lighting and painted the inside walls a reddish orange color. What did it, I think, truly, was that I supplied him with a set of paints so he can decorate the inside however he likes. I made sure to have a good variety of yellows oranges and reds and some black to add spice. I cut the handles short on some of my older small paint brushes for him to use.
I had no idea if he would be at all interested in the idea, but color seemed so important to him in the tests that I thought it a worthy gamble. And he seems pleased with the idea. He's currently sitting on the floor inside the thing, maddly plotting what he wants to put into the cabinet for furniture.
I do hope he deals with the idea of being a 'product' of the mendel project alright. I am a bit worried about how he will react to more information on the idea...only time will tell I suppose.
<center> {-Locked in the Cabinet-}</center>

Aster glanced at the snake like creature sitting on her shoulder suspiciously. "You *promise* you're not going to try anything with these people?" The snake glanced back wryly and replied,"If I couldn't try anything, I'd just sit there the entire time." Aster went a bit cross eyed at the logic and sighed. She'd given up arguing with him about his action or judgment weeks ago. It was easier to just go along with him up until the point it became illegal. Plus, given *her* record, it wasn't like she was in any position to judge. "Fine then, don't do anything that involves me getting phonecalls stating just how you've convinced the new kid to join your underground evil mafia and have taken over the house in lieu of world domination. Fair?" He did his best to stifle a grin as Aster knocked on the door.. and looked around for anything shiny to stare at through the windows.

There was a long pause, during which no one came to the door, although there was obvious movement within. After a few more moments, a fae looking woman with short red hair opened the door. A small dragon lurked behind her legs like a cat, hissing at the unfamiliar people. Music was playing somewhere in the background, a very young child suddenly squeeled and giggled very loudly..."Hello?"

Dragon? ... Dragon. Aster glanced from Titanium down to the little lizard, paused a moment, before snickering. "Relative of yours Ti?" It was a little.. weird. And big. And holy crap she had a kid? Oh... kay. After she picked her jaw up and stopped staring, she held out a hand and grinned,"Hey there! You're the new recruit for Puchi's little misadventures in chemistry, right? I'm Aster, and this is Titanium." Said snake mendel was giving the dragon down there a good stare. Hmm, dragons would make... interesting 'pets'...

The dragon caught the mendel staring at him, and glared back. HE did not think the small snake looked anything like a relative of his. A second voice joined the first child in giggling. "Ah, yes. I'm Dr. Fyre, pleasure to meet you both." She held out her hand to Aster, smiling slightly. "You seem a bit...surprised. You didn't expect me to be taller, did you?" The woman winked. Although since Aster had most likely not met her husband, she wouldn't really get the whole joke.

Aster looked a bit befuddled by the statement, before snickering a couple of times, "Actually I was wondering first where you got that little guy," she pointed down at the dragon,"And then where the heck you get the time to have some little rascals if that giggling is what I think it is." Sure, she had her hands full at times with Libra and Cedric, but those were a bit easier to corral. Cedric couldn't leave his cup, which meant you always knew where he was, and Libra well... Libra seemed to be the Anti-Titanium since she hadn't caused any trouble a day in her life.

The red haired woman shrugged, "I don't have any time left, you see. I'm always looking for things to eat it up. Never liked time much." She looked down at the dragon, "Oh, Bryagh was living in my attic...in a house I lived in once. I've been fostering dragons for awhile now. They're lovely when they don't cinge the furniture." Bryagh snorted at her, as if he felt insulted by the sentiment.

"Mn, well, I guess those little guys would definitely do it. So, whatcha think of the 'wonderful world of mendels' so far?" The dragons were kinda cute... in an odd sorta way. Maybe if Ti turned into a dragon when he grew up.. that'd be really cool. Wait.. that could also be really, really bad. Especially if he got thumbs to go with those wings. Ti on the other hand had begun trying to devise a scheme of sneaking one of the little lizards home to be a minion. Screw Puchi's mutants, he'd get a DRAGON.

Bryagh sniffed again, and stalked back into the house. Fyre watched him go looking vaguely amused, before turning back to her guest, "Its been....interesting. Hyd..." she lowered her voice, "Is a bit sensative."

Aster quirked an eyebrow. Sensitive? Well sure, some of them probably had a few easily bruised egoes, but other than that they were pretty resilient. Leaning over so she could whisper,"..Sensitive? As in --" She stopped asking when she remembered who was on her shoulder. "Hang on a sec." Picking up Titanium [who had been sitting there all ears with full intent of making use of all this later], she walked over to the couch and set him down, then walked back over to the red haired pixie woman after shooting the snake like mendel a glance that read as 'don't eeeeven think about it.' "Now, you were saying about.. a 'bit sensitive'?"

Fyre nodded, "Easily upset. He was very offended at the idea of experiments...and it took alot of talking to convince him otherwise. And he's currently sulking after having a shouting match with Henriette...er...she cleans the house sometimes...because he though she was trying to insult him...something about losing his belongings..." She shook her head. "In a household with so many...members, I'm worried about him getting along."

"Ohhhh," she nodded, "Sounds like a handful there." God she was glad Ti wasn't so picky about stuff like that. Vengeful and plotting yes, but that was easy to deal with. Titanium looked around. So, this chick had a new Mendel as well? He looked around, making sure they weren't paying attention, and then proceeded to go off to have a look for himself. If he couldn't find this guy, he was bound to discover something interesting.

"No more then the twins I suppose." Fyre considered, "But...more mature obviously, and so it takes more explaining." Meanwhile, in the living room, Bryagh was stalking Titanium. This new...thing...in his house obviously needed to know who was in charge.

Titanium looked around. While the change of scenery was... mildly amusing, but still, no sign of the other Mendel. He was getting the sneaky feeling he was being watched. He should know, he's watched before. "He's kinda easy to fly off the handle?" It wasn't the most apt way of putting it, but it sounded somewhat right to the taller girl.

"mmm Something like that. Bit moody. He's so new, I suppose I'm still getting used to him and he's still getting used to... well everything." Bryagh had by now circled around, and take the opportunity to leap out in front of the snake-like mendel in a most startling manner, with a reptilian hiss.

"Yea, I think they're all a little freaked out at first. Well, I *guess* they are.. I got Ti after he'd already climbed out and greeted the world. It's sort of like being born and getting childhood and puberty at the same time," Which had to SUCK, now that she thought about it. More than getting chased by rival Filiphino pirates or mailing yourself in a box. Titanium looked a little surprise at first by the dragon appearing out of nowhere. "What the hell -- hey!" He stared at the little dragon with an expression of slight disdain. How dare the little thing try to be intimidating?! Hmph. "Is that supposed to scare me? Tch." he asked coolly.

Fyre nodded, "Indeed. So...was there something I could help you with? And would you like to come in, there's no point in standing in the doorway after all. Some tea?" The dragon looked just as unimpressed, and Titanium got the distinct impression of ... not a statement exactly - but a feeling 'this is MY house.' Sharp little dragon nails clicked against the floor.
