I've seen many people struggle with races, either here on Gaia, or at home or classes. So I though this may help for those seeking a general description. (Mind you, I'm not keeping any of this chained to the D&D universe or Tolkien's universe. These are beasts and races that you will find in books and movies in general. Not just from one plot, storyline, or universe.)
It's the general idea of the race, not too twisted around. If someone wants to twist it around, that's fine. But not why this thread is here. I ask for different idea's if I missed any. Not different interpretations.
Races:
Humans: Nuetral creatures who are not bound to any spacific god, goddess or religion. They choose as they like. Humans can quickly turn to mages, or fighters, depending on their interests and whom their tutor is. They range for the most beautiful of creatures to the lowliest of scum, and can mate with many other races. Elves, orcs, etc.
Orcs: Usually discusting beasts who are normally not classified as a race at all, but more of a creature. They have a lust for blood and carnage and work well as barbarians with axes or hammers. They dwell deep within caves, and like to keep to their own religion. They usually loath the human race or any other race for that matter, but occasionally you will have an orc so hungry for true lust, that a Half-orc child will be born.
Half-orcs: Still rathing disgusting creatures, they are much more civilized then that of a true full blooded orc. They learn as humans do if they grow up with humans, or they learn as orcs do, if they grow up with orcs. They are not usually accepted by either race, as the humans find them most repulsive, and the orcs find the poor half-child tainted.
This is a link that tells of Elvish Folklore from many different countries, different from the D&D universe.
High Elves:Beautiful creatures of quick wit and charm. They make the best of wizards or dragon breeders. They are shorter and far more slender then that of humans, if also all the more graceful. They tend to hate humans and feel sorry for them as they think that Humans are clumsy and dull, and rather not so beautiful. Sometimes, a High elf will mate with a human.
Wood Elf: Wood Elve's live in villages deep within forests. Most woodelves become rangers as they grow old and hunt for fox or elk. They are beautiful like High elves, and cousins of the High elves, however they do not usually practice magics unless it is a healing spell or warding spell.
Dark Elf: Creatures of the night, as some call them. They are indeed cousins of both the Wood Elves and High elves, however they live deep undergorund or deep within caves to avoid the sunlight. They are usually thiefs and the like. They're skin is so dark, and so black it has a tint of blue to it, and their hair, so pearly white it glints even within the darkness. They have a varied eye color of goldish brown to the most envious of reds.
Halfelf: Part human, part elf. They are graceful and beautiful, yet taller and more prone to disease then most of the elven race. Elves dislike most of them becuase of their human blood, and humans tend to welcome them to their homes with open arms.
Halfing: (For those that don't know, it's a hobbit.) Small creatures, who can either be thieves, or a wizards apprentice. They tend to be mischevious people that lie often and travel in caravans often times. It's no uncommon to see a halfing merchant, or a halfing assasin either. Often times they will have large noses and small bust. Their hair raggedy, and their eyes squinted. Not to say that these creatures aren't beautiful, but they sure are no High Elves.
Gnomes: Creatures of great intelligence, they either thrive in the field of wizardry or mechanics. Many gnomes can make flying contraptions, or metal robots to help them with their own work. Often times their experiments will fail, but if they truely tried, they could create a world of their own. They stand higher then halfings, though shorter then elves. They have an oddly atractive look about them.
Gnomes
Dwarves: Dwarves work hard at their mining skills, and their fighter skills. They also take much pride in their beards, and how well they may braid the length. (Yes, even female dwarves take pride in their beards.) They are folk who don't like to be meddled with.
Reptilian Humanoids: Reptile creautres who are tall and quick like humans. They take pride in their magic and merchantry goods. They are covered in scales and priceless jewels. They often dwell within damp caves.
Mer Creatures: Humanoid creatures who live beneath the water. They do not always have to have fins, they can consist of water elves, whom simply live near the water, however, can breath under the water and communicate easily with others beneath the water. Those that live beneath are gorgeous creature of high, maybe even higher grace then the High Elves, and they take pride in knowing this. They have scales and fings on their lower half's of their bodies, and transport pearls and other valuable minerals to the service for trade.
Fey: Often times people think them of small, flittering creatures. It's true, many of them are. Fey can be of the smallest of fairies to the largest of Nymphs or Dryad's. Most of them are mischevious beings who thief and lie, but often enough you'll find one true, and willing to be helpful. I cannot find the link the where this came from, however;Click here to see more on Fairies
Another link of folklore, rather then from the D&D universe.
Demons: Demons can either be beautiful creatures, or ugly creatures. They often have a reddish tint to their skin, hooves, tails, horns, and pointed ears. They can either look like a true demon, or they can look like a half-demon. Sometimes, a demon will not even need these things to identify it, as it can look just like a very seductive human, which many call a succubus. Demons are mostly of an evil alighmment.
The Tainted: The Tainted is an incognito race of demons and angels whom have mated together to create a new race. Rather then good or evil, they are purely and strictly nuetral, unless they honestly chose to be one or the other. They are not born one or the other, they actually must chose. Often times another race will be confused to see a being with demon angels but angel wings walking about the street. They focus their careers on mostly guardians.
Half-Demon: Half demons are demons that have been breeded with another race, whether it be humans, elfs, orcs, etc. They will occasionally rebel against their demon blood and hate everything about it, or rebel against their "tainted" blood and hate their side of the family that is not demon. This is a rather confused race, fighting for more then one cause. As for careers, they often take part in anything, depending on what their other half of the race is.
Angels: This is a very open race, depending on the author. Many people think that they have no gender, or that they are defined by gender. Perhaps they have no names, and no figure, but they are a different form of WillOwisp. Some think they have no wings, but simply float, and others think that they have wings. Angels are very undefined.
Githyanki: Githyanki come from another dimension known as the Astral Plane. Corrupted by enslavement and hatred, these human-like creatures are constantly honing their combat skills, and crafting implements of wars. Most notably, traditional swords made from hardened silver.
Djinni: Djinni, or "Genie" are from an astral plane as well, they an be summoned by powerful wizards or warlocks who are in need of their help. They can be bound to books, pocket watches, or most notably; bottles. They work for other races, however this does not stop them from holding grudges against those who summon them and make them work. When given the chance, they will strike down, or hurt their summoner as well as they know how.
Difinition of God
Gods: A race almost built to perfection. They have almost no limits to their power and are explained usually as immortal or mortal. Usually the gods are the source of the people and each is worshipped in their own ways in hopes they are granted their power. In many stories, gods are the ones who have created the planet(s), the people, and lay down the law.
Gods of different cultures
Half-Gods: A unique halfbreed race in which gods are mixed with other races. Their powers are not as strong as that of a god and it is limited as to what it can be. Most Half-Gods are mortal. A famous half-god is Hercules in which was mortal and only had the power of super human strength.

I hate to say this... but aren't you forgetting all the Fey? Not to mention quite a few others...
I don't know, a list like this could basically grow exponentially every time someone decides there's a new interpretation for a given race... I hate to sound like a rotten b*****d, but this isn't the safest of ideas.

Quote:
Lychanthrope: Born ether naturally to the condition or infected with the disease by a wound from another in any non-human form. truely powerful lychanthropes ,often known as alphas or dominates, can create a hybrid form that crosses both there human side and the animal that they become.
Born: Unlike "turned" lychanthropes they will not age after reaching maturity and a very seldome are tied to the cycles of the moon although they still hold a deep respect for it.
Turned: The most common form, "turned" lychanthropes become shapeshifters by being wounded by another lychanthrope although it is possible not to contract Sanis Lupis from an encounter it is uncommon. turned lychanthropes have littel or no control over there shapeshifting and will change on the full moon or when they lose control of there emotions. They age naturaly and cannot contract diseses.

Dragon Kin: Dragon kin can sometimes be a different race all together before they are actually -turned- to a dragon, which is why this is bothered to be placed into the subraces. Dragon's themselves are not usually considered a seperate race, as often times they are simply creatures of their own. There can often times be thousands of different kind of dragons, but we'll only name a few here; Dracolich, Song Dragon, Red Dragon, Gold Dragon, Shadow Dragon, Wyrmling. Each dragon has their own look, color, breath, and personality. For example, a Song Dragon will look like a gold dragon, as it does not have it's own distinct shape, but it will be a silver blue color rather then that of a gold. A song Dragon will breath a shockingly lethal breath as it containts lightning. Dragons themselves are -usually- large creatures that can fly, produce magic, and often kill or spare however they feel needed. Dragons can also be small, yet still very powerful. It all depends on what kind of dragon they really are.
Quote:
Vampires: Complete enemies to werewolves/Lycans. They have a burning passion and a lust for blood, and will get it by any means possible. Some vampires are turned against there will, and some go willingly with the promise of immortality, but what they don't realise is that they are no better off then the undead. There are -very- few "real" and original vampires left, and most of them were killed off. The ones that had to be turned, are vampires, but this is only their subrace, and not what they truely are.
Quote:
Undead: Undead is a subrace, becuase there is no one -true- undead. These hideous beings are once dead corpses brought back to life by a necromancer, or a god that they had made a pact with. Often times, a powerful king will be brought back as an undead so that he can continue on living, as he made a deal with a god to do so. But if they are mere peasants whom have died of disease or another reason, they will often be brought back as a lichen, skeleton, or ghoul. Undead have an extremely high and expandable subject, as sometimes they don't even have to be brought back. They can simply linger as spectres or wraiths. Some mages can enchant a body to return as a DoomKnight which is a large gaurdian of immense power. Some examples of Undead are: Shadow, Wight, Lichen, Mohrg, mummy, skeleton, ghoul, or even an innocent looking WillOwhisp.
Quote:
Mutates: Unique beings that have mutated from other races. They sometimes have special abilities or are just deformed. Most mutants evolve from their surrondings in which allow them to survive easier.
