THE ADOPTION

The Sun shone brightly overhead as a dark form made its way along the abandoned street. A long, black leather duster mostly covered the person's body and pants accompanied her blood red tank top, and her raven black hair hung down to her waiste. Although walking at such a pace would have had a normal person breathing out wisps of breath into the cold air, no 'smoke' seemed to come from her mouth.
Lauryn de Vampyre stopped in midstride, looked across the street, and there, just on the other side, was a building that resembled a house...an older house that she had been in only once before. Slowly Lauryn crossed the pavement and made her way up the stairs that led to the main door. Unsure of whether to knock or to enter since the last time she was here the door had been left open, she contemplated both for a minute until finally taking hold of the doorknob and turning it slowly.
Once the door was slightly ajar, she stuck in her head and peaked around. "Hello?" She called out softly.
Mekania was taking a break. For some reason, taking breaks for Mek equaled making work for herself. So here she was, within the shop. Her face with a severe expression and her eyes containing an almost dead look. Yes, her boy was fine. But it didn't ease her concious that he couldn't move either.
But here she was. Two utterly annoying wisps floating about her head, one black and one white. Destruction and Devotion. Wonderful. Whatever compelled her to subject an unsuspecting constumer from getting stuck with these two was beyond her comprehension. She probably just wanted someone to suffer. She gave a grim smile. Her ears twitched at the sound of someone entering and she straightened up behind the counter, putting on her most charming smile. "Good afternoon! Is there something I can help you with?" The two wisps continued to dart in and out of her hair like it was their personal playground. Oddly enough, the black one looked like it was trying to pull it out.
Lauryn pushed the door open farther, stepped inside and made sure to close the door behind her. Everything that she could immediatly see was the same as when she had visited before, only then it had been inhabited by many adolescent beings of semi curios natures. The furniture told any visitors that this was a home, all but the lone business desk which behind it sat a radiant woman of remarkable beauty.
She crossed the room and approached the desk with unwavering grace of movement, and grinned warmly at the woman. This was someone she had not seen in her previous visit. Lauryn couldn't help but notice that two blobs of color, wisps she now remembered they were termed, were weaving themselves in and out of her flaming red hair. After realizing that she had been staring for a few moments, she turned her attention back to the woman. "Well, I suppose there might be. I was told by a close friend to seek this place out if I wished to adopt, which I do." She couldn't help but raise one eyebrow at the antics of the wisps, which were effectivly distracting. "My friend, Choucho, informed me of the Kuatalmots since she addopted one herself. Taye, I believe its name was." Lauryn looked to the woman for confirmation.
Mekania nodded, "Yes, Chou has Taye. We love her around here." Her smile grew. Chou was such a sweet girl and a model to boot. But back to business, which happened to be the pests making a mess out of her curly locks. She took a deep breath, readying herself to promote the little things. "My name is Mekania and I'm one of two owners of this shop. These -" She paused to gesture to the wisps, "Are the only two Kuatalmot we have at the moment, and they come together. They're emotions are Destruction and Devotion."
The shopowner went on to tell all about the Kuatalmot, how Suki found them, how they would grow, the letter memories, the rules of the shop, the journals. Everything. When she was finished, she gave a slight smile. Even the wisps had gotten board of her rambling and moved on to bigger and more entertaining things, lingering close to the desk so they wouldn't get chastised again. Mekania gave the possible costumer a hopeful smile, "Still interested?"
The tall woman had listened intently to the story behind the discovery of these Kuatalmots and hadn't moved a muscle throughout the entire recitation. Now she grinned once more, her arms rising to fold together over her blood red top. Her mind had definatly picked up the fact that if she wanted one, she would have to take the other. Devotion she was pretty sure she could handle, and Desctruction...seemed like a lot of fun.
Knowing full well what taking these two under her wing would mean, she let the idea slide through her brain before finally lifting her arms and hands in surrender. "Definatly still interested. Where do I sign?" She chuckled and watched the two wisps. She had come in understanding that it was normal for a person to only recieve one, but was pleased to find that if all went to plan, two would be coming home with her. Lauryn also knew that she would have to remove anything of great value from the house before the wisp turned into its child form.
The red-head pulled out a clipboard with a pen attatched and held it out to the lady, "Just fill out this form, give it to me, and they're yours." She motioned for the wisps to come forward and the twirled around her arm. Mekania shooed them towards the lady, happily. They would be recieving a good home, if her instincts were correct. And they almost always were. Momentarily forgetting her manners, she spoke the words that had crossed her mind when the women entered, "You're a vampire, aren't you?"
Lauryn had gratefully accepted the clipboard and taken the pen into her hand while thinking how fast the adoption process was, when she stopped suddenly in mid-movement. Slowly her eyes worked their way upwards from the clipboard to the woman in front of her and they held her gaze for what felt like minutes before they studied her facial reactions. There was no animosity in her gaze, however, but a complete lack of emotion.
Having learned from experiance that there were many mortals in the world who wished her kind harm, she took her time answering and had already found many more ways to exit the building than just the front door. "Yes," she said finally, "I am."
"Nice. My husband was one too." The women looked like she didn't really want to divulge this information, so the voluptuous owner tried to ease the situation by divulging her own identity. One that only Suki knew about, "I'm a demon. I came here to study mortals and ended up in a shop selling humanoid beings that were once the intense thoughts of people on Gaia. Funny how things work out."
Her grey eyes watched the two birds of smoke dart around the lady. At least they seemed to like her.
Lauryn thought she would have been prepared for any kind of answer...but this surely proved her wrong. Although she was adept at schooling her face to let no emotion show through when she so desired, her eyes now showed a glint of suprise and amusement of the revealed information. "A demon, you say." In truth, she was suprised that she hadn't picked anything of the like up. Spending so much time with humans, you would think she would have been able to tell the difference.
She felt her entire being relax upon the revealing of such information and grinned once more, all in delight. "Things do seem to work out quite differently than what one plans." Upon this statement, she looks to the two wisps circling her body. They certainly had not been in any plans of hers.
Quickly but surely she filled out all the paperwork required and handed back the clipboard with attatched pen. "Is that really all there is to this adoption?"
She noted the surprise, "I've been trained to hide things really well." She nodded behind her, "There would usually be wings back there but those were a bit conspicuous." Mekania gave a pleased grin. It eased her mind, knowing that she could fit in so well. She pushed back her hair and continued watching the wisps, almost happy they were leaving. She was such a b***h.
Taking the clipboard, she scanned it with her eyes. Her mind taking in all the information within second and looked back up at the woman, "Looks good, Lauryn. And yes, there usually is more to the whole thing. Usually it's an open house type of thing and we go through all the applications submitted and choose the best ones. Lots of competetion. You seem like you would be a great owner and we'd love to have you. These two are a special case, since they come together. Which also means they're a bit more expensive." Mekania mentally slapped her forehead. She couldn't believe she hadn't mentioned the price early on. Hopefully, this wasn't an issue to Lauryn.
She grinned wider, clearly pleased that the adoption process had been drawn and quartered for this time. She pushed her long black hair behind her shoulders and watched the two wisps swirl around her for a few moments before returning her gaze to the gorgeous demon. "I've always wanted wings." she said quietly and chuckled. "Money really isn't an issue." she admitted, knowing she would have more than enough to live comfortably for many, many, many, many years to come.
Lauryn moved her left hand around near her hip and watched as the black and white wisps tried to cling to it, but moved it away again before they had a chance to really latch on. She knew what happened to those that touched a wisp. "Is this goodbye for now then?"
She nodded with a stunning smile before a reminder crossed her mind, "Oh, wait !" Mekania bent and rummaged through the things under the desk. When she re-emerged she was holding a journal in her hand and held it out the new member to the shop. "Please, write in this and have them write in it too, as much as they can. It's important that we know what's going on with them." The redhead chewed her lip, making sure she had remembered to say everything she needed to. Nope, that seemed to be all. Giving another friendly smile, all pearly whites included, she added perkily, "Welcome aboard, Lauryn! Take care of them"
Lauryn was briefly startled at the exlimation, but recovered quickly and took the elegant journal into her hands, turning it over and rummaging through the empty pages. Now this could be fun. "I'll be sure and keep you updated." She lifted the journal to signify what she meant. "Thanks for the welcome, and they will be taken care of. You can count on that." She ushured the wisps to follow her as she headed for the door. When she had gotten it opened and had stepped halfway through, she turned around and smiled mischeviously. "I'm sure we'll be meeting again soon." And with that, she and the two wisps were gone.
