Welcome to Gaia! ::

<center>So I recently redownloaded Ragnarok Online on another computer. After installing, restarting, and what not ... I attempted to start the game .. This error came up:

Error Starting Program
The DDRAW.DLL file cannot start.
Check the file to determine the problem.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I tried repairing the program and reinstalling ... Nothing works ...

Can someone help me with this?

I run on a Windows ME, if it helps. I'm hoping to install a XP soon.
<center>Wonder if anyone else has this ...
<center>*stabs Ragnarok* stare
<center>Hopefully I can get an answer by tommorrow ... sweatdrop
First, you posted the URL of an illegal private server in another thread. X
Second, you are bumping the hell out of this pointlessly. XX
Third, this error is probably caused because you are trying to play an illegal private server. XXX

are you out of here yet?

<center>o_O ... I downloaded the original ragnarok, not a bootleg. X
Second, I'm not bumping, I'm posting.
Third, I'm not on the server. I just know of the server, but I play with money and actually support Ragnarok.

Thank you for making false accusations. stare

Um, regardless of what you're playing though, I'd be worried if that file was missing because it's something that should've come with Windows or at least is some kind of important system file that should already be there when you get your computer. O_o

<center>... You do have a point ... This is a old computer. x_o ... Thanks for not being like the person above and make pointless notes stare 3nodding whee
DDRAW.DLL might be because you need Direct X. If not try updating your video card's driver.

<center>Another pointer ... Thanks ... Recently my video card has been acting up ... neutral ... Hmm ... Maybe I should reformat or something. Hopefully updating this to a Windows XP will help. Thank you!

If it's possible to update it to XP. I think it requires like 32mbs of RAM just to run or something like that.

I'm surprised to hear how often people think/recommend formatting. It's the last thing you do and in emergency. You can recover from pretty much all problems without formatting your hard drive and with less effort.
Try installing the latest DirectX first from Microsoft.com and then checking that you have the latest drivers for your videocard, like Metta suggested. If the problem still occurs, you could check the settings in RO setup. And maybe find a solution with Google if the problem is persistent. 3nodding

<center>Yeah ... I am in the last resort now though ... My computer is pretty old and I tried fixing it countless times ... I'll download DirectX first, thanks! domokun heart
Meh, I had a problem like that except it was with the data file.

All I had to do was unzip it using a program such as winzip, instead of the of program that comes with XP.

Well, last resort should really really be the last resort. If you can find something to do short re-formatting, go for it. One scenario where it would probably be necessary is what happened to me this past week. I went to go look for lyrics to a song and this malicious pop up ad installed a crapload of adware on my computer. One of them apparently contained a virus because my ISP dropped me from the network. I ran all sorts of programs to get rid of it and I got rid of most of it, except one very stubborn one. Right before it would get deleted it would make a duplicate of itself that wasn't targetted so that my computer would stay infected. I looked at my task manager and I didn't see any programs that looked suspicous running and there were no other files in my systems folders that I could find that were unfamiliar, so I figured it must be really well hidden and I was going on a wild goose chase with that one file since it kept copying itself, and I couldn't find its source, so that I figured warranted a re-format. XD
