The Atrium is home to Gullien's expanding family of nimue. Because of that, it's asked that all visitors be respectful.

It is also assumed that visitors have been invited. All the same, please make no changes or additions to the environment without her permission.

In other words, this is not your journal and you are not guardian to these nimue. Do not post without Gullien's explicit permission.
Hello and welcome to my atrium! This is a place where my various Nim can rest and socialize. Visitors are welcome, but please do not post without permission.

If you are interested in buying a Nim, take a look at A Whispered Name.
Feel free to post and say hello, it's a very friendly place.

The atrium is a large converted greenhouse in the unusual shape of an octagon. It's located outside of Gullien's house near the forest preserve.
The atrium is usually locked, not to keep the Nim in (they seem to be little escape artists) but to keep the more threatening or clumsy creatures out (such as Matthias).

The atrium has 8 panels of glass which allow full sunlight into the Fire Nim and Earth Nim areas. It also has two large panels of shaded glass so that the Earth Nim's plants get some relief and the Water and Air Nim can venture into other areas without the risk of dehydration. There is wood paneling over the Air and Water Nim areas to keep them cool and out of direct light.

The Fire Nim area is in the lower left corner and contains rocks, bowls of fragrant oil and several cacti as well as a large sandbox.

The Water Nim area is the upper left area and contains a large freshwater pond, several small aquariums (including a saltwater aquarium) and a number of mosture-loving plants. It also contains a good number of fat fish and a growing snail population, much to the Earth Nim's despair.

The Wind Nim area is in the upper right corner. It contains a number of trees hung with windchimes, streamers and other misc. A large fan is placed in one window and creates a small blast of air. It is aimed directly at a large piece of fabric stretched between two trees.

The Earth Nim area is in the lower right corner. It contains a great number of plants and at any given time is over flowing with seedlings and potting soil. The Earth Nim maintain all the plants in the atrium although they do occasionally attempt to force the Fire Nim to care for the cacti.

The Fire Nimue section of the atrium is located in the bottom-left hand corner. It's easy to tell where it starts. All the lush fern-like plants disappear and sparse cactuses in pots begin to appear. The texture of the stone path changes from smooth grey riverstones to slates of reddish-orange sandstone.
Two large skylights beam down on the sandstone, heating it up to the point that it remains warm after the sun has set. Here you can find the Fire Nim.
Fire Nim love sunbathing. They can often be found lying on the various rocks in the area soaking up the sun from the skylight. The types of rock vary dramatically. While Water Nim like shiny objects and Wind Nim like sound, Fire Nim love texture and so the rocks range from as abrasive as sandpaper to as smooth as a mermaid's tear.
Large shallow bowls full of some kind of oil are also scattered about the area and the Fire Nim can be found darting into them to bath. It's a fascinating sight to see. The oil is flammable so as the Nim touch down the entire bowl goes up into flames. As the Nim dart off, the flames will die down only to shot up again as another Fire touches down. The effect, particularly at night is both unsettling and gorgeous. It is like the fires of a minature hellscape or the distance view of a number of suns flaring in the nightsky.
The oddest object in this area is a large sandbox. For some reason, perhaps because of their love of texure, the Fire Nimue often spend much of this time rolling about in the sand, scrubbing it on themselves in a manner very similar to their oil baths. The Fire Nims are, in this way, as industriously lazy as a cat and they often spend their days going from rock to oil to sand to rock.

Spectrum is my oldest Nim and also the first one that I've bred, and seems to have a very odd recessive gene. She's very unusual in markings and is highly distinctive. She's particularly gorgeous during an oil bath when her colors are highly glossed and bathed in flame.
Spectrum rules the Fire area with an iron-fist when awake. Fortunately most of her time is spent happily sleeping on various rocks, which she has been known to shove other Nimue off of when she is in need of a nap. The only Nimue whom get Spectrum moving during naptime is Lenore, whom Spectrum seems to be fascinated by. What the nature of that fascination is, I can't tell.

User Image

Iridis, a child of Spectrum. Remember that recessive gene I mentioned? Iridis's gorgeous butterfly wings are an excellent example of it. Although she lacks in the body markings that her siblings have, Iridis's rainbow color is probably the most pure.
Iridis is a far cry from her mother. She is very industrious and can often be found bathing in the oil bowls or in the Wind Nim areas, flinging herself in front of the fan with her sister. She seems to be particular friends with Rosa and the two of them often disgruntle Spectrum by using Rosa's water to build castles in the sandbox.

In the upper-left corner of the atrium there sits a large pond surronded by plants. It is a freshwater pond and the water is cool to the touch. Occasionally a gust of wind from the Wind Nimues' fan will blow across the surface and fill the area with a fine mist.
The pond is stocked with several fat and lazy goldfish. They are the popular playmates and harrasment objects of the Water Nim and it's not uncommon to see Nimue and fish darting about until the smooth surface of the water. Shiny coins, glass marbles and other bright objects lay on the pond's bottom. Water Nim seem to love reflective objects and they often collect the shinies, only to distribute them into the water again when their collection is large enough.
On a shelf near the pond sits a salt-water aquarium. The Water Nim are not as interesting in swimming in the aquarium, but they seem to hold the fish and coral animals in it as a sort of fascinating and at any time at least one Nim can be found sitting in front of it, using it as nature's television. Next to the aquarium are several bags of fishfood and pellets. It is the Water Nimues' job to feed the fish and they do so several times a day. Perhaps this is why all the animals in this side of the atrium are so very large.

The Water Nimue

User Image

Rosa is currently my only Water Nim. She arrived fully grown as a gift from my friend Everdark. She currently reins supreme over the aquarium although she spends a surprising amount of time socializing with the Fire Nimue in the sandbox. I'm not sure if this is because she's lonely for company or because she particularly likes sand. She seems utterly uninterested in the Wind and Earth sections. I suppose I won't know the answer until I get another Water Nim.
Update: Well, another Water Nim besides Elaine. Rosa is rather intimidated by Elaine and seems to prefer avoiding the rambunctious Nim. Rosa is now spending more time in the Fire area with Iridis and Spectrum. Elaine seems a bit leery of the Fires, so that may be why Rosa is there. Rosa has also created a new game called "Steal Elaine's Treasure When She's Playing with Chroma and Dump It All Over the Place." It drives Elaine to distraction but she just can't seem to catch Rosa in the act.

This Nimue was a gift from Mystaria and Mistress Ice, who had a leftover pearl from their Nim breeding. I was hoping Elaine and Rosa would bond but... well, Elaine is different. For starters she's clothed, although many of Myst's Nim do adapt clothing. She also hoards the shinies in the pond viciously. Unlike Rosa, who collects them and then forgets them, Elaine carefully hoardes away all of the shinies she finds and she keeps rotating her hiding spots. She's also very picky about her shinies and will reject pop-tops and foil in favor of coins and particularly colorful marbles. I've also had to fish her out of the salt-water aquarium on more than one occasion when her attempts to steal the little plastic treasure chest/bubble blower in there went astray. I've also caught her riding about on one of plastic waterlilies I put in the pond. She had someone convinced Chroma to tow her around and the two of them seemed to be having a great time. However, after seeing that I'm firmly conviced that Elaine thinks she's a pirate. I'm looking into buying one of those plastic pirate boats one buys for toddlers to put in their bath. I think Elaine's reaction to it should be interesting.

Chroma is the daughter of Spectrum and Ononea.
Chroma seems to be fun and mischief incarnate. She is Elaine's willing and eager First-Mate and lackey and the bane of Lenore's existance (even moreso than Spectrum!) The simple matter is that Chroma loves life, loves adventure and love flying. When I first got her, I often had to physically remove her from the fan area for fear that she would hurt herself after the third or fourth hour straight of letting herself be flung into the hammock. She loves the bells and windchimes in the Wind area and often the whole atrium is filled with the music she makes flying around and shaking the branches. Chroma is very close to her sister Iridis and the two of them are often found flying together in the Wind area. Until the arrival of Elaine, Iridis was a calming influence on Chroma but now that a new source of mischief has arrived, Chroma is up to her old tricks with a new enthusiam.
Spectrum is has long since given up trying to control Chroma and doesn't even try as long as Chroma isn't in the Fire area. Lenore has already blacklisted Chroma from the Earth area and will give chase if she spots the other Nim in her sanctuary. Unfortunately, this really only encourages Chroma. I'm hoping the two new Air Nim pearls I've gotten will hatch to be quiet and calm Nim. Perhaps having a calming influence in her own alignment will help restrain Chroma.

Esprit was a gift pearl from Mystaria! ^^
Esprit is an odd little Nim indeed. I was expecting another light-hearted flyer like Chroma and instead I got another quite thinker like Lenore. Esprit seems to have bonded with Lenore since before she was hatched. As soon as her pearl cracked, she was off like a shot to where Lenore was hiding. She often follows Lenore around and seems to be learning how to tend plants from her. Not a bad idea, as the Air area has a pretty good number of its own plants. Esprit is as quite as Lenore, but not as solitary and it's not unusual to see her playing with Iridis and Rosa in the sandbox. She will even participate in Elaine and Chromas' quieter games and other two seem to understand this and treat her fairly gently. Still, Lenore is Esprit's complete favorite and I've even found the two of them curled up and napping in the sun together, looking adorable in shades of black and white and pink and blue. The only Nim Esprit initally had trouble with Spectrum. However after a row with Lenore, Spectrum has changed her tune and now seems to be trying to gain Esprit's favor. Esprit still seems wary of her tho, and sticks close to Lenore whenever Spectrum is about.

Lenore, like Rosa, was a Valentine's gift from Ed.
Lenore is a very solitary Nimue and if it weren't for her white coloring, I don't think I would see her most of the time. She prefers to spend her time hidden away amongst the plants in the Earth section of the atrium. I don't believe that Lenore is shy of the other Nim; I've seen her physically step in and send Chroma and Iridis running when their horseplay spilled over into the Earth area and threatened some of the young plants. Lenore just seems to prefer her own company and the company of her plants to that of other Nim. However, she and Spectrum seem to have an understanding. Lenore comes over to the Fire area every week to care for the cacti and in return Spectrum keeps herself and Iridis out of the Earth area (I think Lenore worries about having the Fire-aligned Nim so close to the plants). Of course, that's as far as the agreement goes. Spectrum seems to take it upon herself to harass and cajole Lenore every time the other Nimue ventures out of the Earth area outside of cactus day. I can't tell if Lenore truly bothers Spectrum or if Spectrum has a crush on Lenore and is expressing it in her typical bully way.

Event - Two new Air Pearls!

I've received two Air pearls today! One was a gift from my friend Mystaira whom found it while cleaning in her own atrium. She didn't recognize the markings and none of her own Nim seemed attached to it, so she passed on to me. What a sweetie! The pearl is gorgeous too, black with bands of mottled blue. Ed is already enraptured with it.
I found the other pearl myself jammed in the pond. I almost mistook it for some of the frog spawn we've been having so much trouble with lately! (Elaine has been smuggling frogs into the atrium. I have no idea why and I don't want to know why. I wouldn't mind, but the frogs keep making attempts at eating Chroma and Iridis and it's making everyone irritable.)
I'm sure the second pearl isn't from one of my Nim, but it's possible one of my ladies found it and brought it in. It's a dark grey egg with white thunderbolt-like patterns on it. It's amazing how such clear patterns can emerge in Nim, like Spectrum's butterfly markings. Although I prefer to wait and name my Nim after they hatch, I've already started calling the grey pearl Tempest in my mind and I suspect the name will stick with her from now on.
I've put the two pearls in my incubator and all the Nim have visited them at least once. Chroma (whom I was hoping would become interested in the quiet activity of watching the pearls) couldn't care less and has probably forgotten they're there already. Spectrum investigated them thoughly when they arrived and even though she pretends to ignore then, I can often see her watching them like a hawk from her favorite rock. She reminds me a of a big male lion watching her territory.
To my surprise, the Nimue whose gotten the most involved with the pearls is Lenore. She is constantly slipping out from the Earth area, braving Chroma, Elaine and Spectrum to turn the pearls (although I don't think they require it) and to count and recount them. To my surprise, Spectrum has been leaving Lenore alone while she tends to the pearls and will even drive off Elaine and Chroma if they get to close. Of course, once Lenore is done with the peals she has to quickly streak back to Earth area before Spectrum corners her. There's something very endearing about Lenore's care of the pearls, particularly since I know she'll probably want nothing to do with the Nim when they hatch!

Event - Esprit has hatched!

Hooray, one of the new wind pearls has hatched! I've watched the new Nim for a little while and have named her Esprit. She is, as I've guessed from the pearl colors, absolutely beautiful and very distinct although she's as hard to see as Lenore is easy to find. Poor Lenore has reaped the punishment for her good deeds, no sooner did Esprit hatch then she latched onto Lenore and has been following her about every since. Lenore seems to take it with grudging good grace. So far Esprit has been far more restrained than most of my Nim and despite her wind leanings she seems very interested in Lenore's plants. I would say Esprit may be a kindered spirit for Lenore, but she seems much more a child. I often catch her copying the things Lenore is doing.
I think it's very cute, but Spectrum was furious initially. She allowed one day to check Esprit and then was off of her rock and dive-bombing and harassing her, even in the Earth area! I though I would have to step in for a while, but Lenore rose to the occasion and the two of them had a dogfight all over the atrium. Thankfully, no blood was shed. The two of them seem to have some kind of peace declared now and Spectrum is now trying to curry Esprit's favor. Why, I'm not sure. Perhaps she's trying to make Lenore jealous or trying to steal Esprit away. Heh, perhaps she's trying to get in good with her potential girlfriend's daughter. I never really know what's going on with those two. Having poor Esprit thrown into the mix should make things even more interesting.
post for Esprit disappering off with Morgan. Somehow. ^^;
