Looking out my bedroom window one day, I spied what appeared to be a nest, perched upon a branch of my tree, with a strange looking egg in it. Leaping out of bed, I ran to the window to get a closer look. Sure, I had lots of pets, and it was Spring, but I couldn't think of a single creature who would have an egg like that.

Out the window I went, and up the tree. The mystery was too much for me.

Upon closer inspection, the egg was definitely not a bird's egg. It had what seemed to be ears poking out of it, and stranger still, a fluffy tail. Seeing no parents around, I was still mystified. Maybe the parents had gone off to eat. Not wanting to scare them off, I decided to clamber down and do some research.

My idea of research was to ask my pets (yes, most of them can talk) if they knew what creature may hatch out of the egg. I described it in as much detail as I could and finally one of them said it sounded familiar. So I took her to the tree and she flew up to have a closer look.

"Ah, yes, just as I thought," she said to me. "It is the egg of an Impossumble Pet , a distant relative of the Australian ringtailed possum. The difference being that they come in a much larger variety of colours and have the ability to speak."

I was fascinated to hear such a thing and wanted to know more.

"What else can you tell me about them?" I asked eagerly.

"Well, don't expect to see the parents now. Once the ears poke out of the shell like that, the parents move on to make a nest somewhere else. The egg doesn't need to be incubated. The warmth from the sun is all it needs. And once it hatches, the babies are quite self efficient. Of course the parents tend to set their nests up near a human home. This is because they know you won't be able to resist feeding it." She laughed to herself, like it was a private joke amongst the pets.

Sure enough, a week later, a cute little Impossumble Pet hatched out of the egg and made itself quite at home both in the tree and in my well stocked kitchen.

Lemonade is fully grown now and loves hanging out in the tree or with my other pets. And now baby Basil has hatched and can be found scampering up and down the tree outside my window.

Who knows, maybe you will find an egg like that in your backyard tree. wink

Story update - 1st October 2005 Introducing Hamhams! A new breedable!

Life had been going along beautifully. I now had Lemonade, Basil and Kobalt scampering around the branches of the tree outside. And we had met up with other possum "owners" on our countryside wanderings. I was beginning to realise just how many people had discovered these cute critters.

So, things having settled into quite a steady routine, it was with much surprise that I encountered further impossible happenings in the tree outside my window...

Glancing outside, expecting to see one of several possums hanging around, I saw instead a bluish ball of fluff perched beside a bright pink and blue creature. If called upon to give the pink creature a description, I would initially think "hamster" before stopping myself to counter that well, hamsters just aren't found in trees.

After blinking a few times, squinting and then shaking my head, I eventually wandered on out to the tree in question. Looking up towards the branch holding the new "pets" I softly called hello.

The pink one twitched its nose, blinked and called back hello in reply.

"Um," I began, not sure of what I wanted to say. "Ah, may I ask what species you are? And what is that beside you?"

"No problem. I am used to questions. Our existence often seems strange to human creatures," she replied. "My name is Sparkle. I am a female hamham. This is my baby Junior. He hasn't, as you humans would say 'hatched' yet."

"Ooh. Well I am pleased to meet you Sparkle! Do all hamhams live in trees? And do you mind me asking if Junior has a father?" I added.

"Oh Junior's father is out foraging. Male hamhams spend a lot of time out looking for food for their families. And we don't really live in trees. We just find it safer to have our babies come into the world up here away from any danger. Once they become children they are free to go down to the ground where we have wonderful rambling homes in the treetrunk and under the ground."

"Hmm," I wondered aloud. "Wouldn't the babies be safe in the underground homes?"

"No because there are predators which are very crafty and cunning when it comes to finding their way into our burrows. But they are useless as a wet fish if ever they try to climb a tree."

"Well you keep a good watch over your baby there. I hope my possums don't bother you. They can be very boisterous," I worried.

"Don't worry. I have met them already and they are most quiet and careful around Junior," Twinkle assured me.

So that is how I came to discover hamhams. I hope you discover one too!
