Welcome. My name is Gendou, and this is my first art contest. For quite some time, I've been commissioning artwork of my avatar. I have enough individiual pieces of art that I am, officially, a member of the Art Whore guild. You may have seen me in various shops in the Requests forum. Perhaps you've seen one of the incarnations of my avatar displayed as a sample in one of said shops.And now, to collect more art in swift abundance, I'm holding my first art contest. Those who know me personally can likely tell you how I hoarde donation letters. I've been collecting them since I joined, in the last month of 2003. So, as a grand prize, I'll be giving away a December 2003 donation letter. You can choose for yourself whether you want the Nitemare Scarf or the Angelic Scarf.
Keep in mind, I'm looking for quality art that clearly shows effort and skill. Read further to find out more.

||December 31st / January 1st|| The contest is now closed.
We may accept a few late entries, depending on when we get to the judging, but at this point, the number of entries (even taking into account the several last-minute entries we recieved) were not enough to qualify for prizes in any one category.
However, We're still determined to hand out prizes, even if they aren't the ones we'd originally planned on handing out. We will roll all of the entries into a single category and hand out consolation prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Judging should take place sometime this weekend.
I want to extend my personal apologies to all of the artists who entered expecting a much grander contest and prizes, but unfortunately, the contest didn't go off quite as expected. Even so, we will be handing out some prize, and I sincerely hope they will be welcome.
||December 13th|| It has been 5 months since we were open for entries, and we still don't have enough to give out prizes. We continued to push the deadline later and later, thinking perhaps that people were busy with school or work. But we won't push it anymore. THE DEADLINE IS JANUARY 1ST. No late entries will be accepted. Hopefully, people will enter in these last weeks.
||August 8th|| Still more entries are coming in, and we're very pleased. Some more links and affiliates have been added, and I'm still working on the "extras" for this thread. Check out the bottom posts -- there's some goofy doodle action going on from Anetra. XD
||August 3rd|| More characters added to the reference section. That'll likely be the last of 'em. There's also some Q&A in the FAQ section, and that will be updated as questions are asked in the thread. In addition to all this, our first entry came in! Damn. That was fast!
||August 2nd|| Not much has changed. There's a color reference of Necromancer Gendou is up and we have some profiles for Necro!Gendou's allies. The thread is now officially open, and we'll be adding more information (like who the judges are, the FAQ and more secondary characters) as time permits.
||August 1st|| We're almost ready. Unfortunately, I really can't do anymore at the moment, so the thread still isn't open, technically. Almost all of the needed information is up, and we're still waiting for a few more reference pictures. But go ahead and get started, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask them in the thread.
||July 31st|| Due to the forum downtime today, we couldn't work on the thread. Therefore, there's a chance the completion might be extended a day. We're still going to try to have everything up by tommorrow night, though.
||July 30th||Man, my head hurts. After talking with Gendou about prizes and categories, I typed up and formatted the section for prizes, since, let's face it, that's what the people wanna know. The pure gold value of all the prizes together? OVER A MILLION. I had no idea he was so rich in letters. More information is being written and added as time permits. So far, people seem interested, if confused due to the lack of information.
||July 29th|| The construction of the thread begins. I (Ruevian) am still shaping the basics of the thread, and sending PMs out to the neccesary people. We hope to get things ready and finished by the 1st of August. We're currently on the lookout for affiliates for a link exchange -- if you're interested, send this mule a PM or post in the thread. READ THESE RULES.Thread Rules:
1. Don't spam. Hanging out and chatting is fine (even encouraged), but too many spam posts might drown out questions regarding the contest, and the thread maintainers won't be able to keep up. So please, only bump when the thread is off of the first page of the forum.
2. Abide by the Terms of Service. Don't harrass other users, don't be a jackass, and just act like an adult. Flaming/trolling will be punished.
3. Don't critique the entries that come in. We want people to feel comfortable entering. The pressure is high enough as it is.
4. Don't give the thread maintainers grief. Treat Ruevian and Grayed as you would Gendou.
5. Don't post pictures in the thread. Especially ones that would stretch the page.
6. No begging for items. I don't think this will happen, but you never know.
Contest Rules:
1. You must submit your own original work. More than one person will be on the lookout for art thieves, and when (not if) we catch you in the act, you'll not only be banned from the contest, you'll also be reported to a mod.
2. Submissions must have Gendou in it. This seems like it would be obvious, but it happens. A picture of your original character recolored to look like Gendou will not be accepted.
3. Entries must be submitted no later than 48 hours before January 1st, to allow for in-depth judging.
4. Previously commissioned artists are more than welcome to enter, but don't recycle old commissions.
5. Mature content (situations rated higher than PG-13) in submissions is acceptable, but please PM your entry rather than posting it in the thread. Be aware that we will censor your art as much as neccesary for the entry page. Content considered mature would involve extreme violence, frontal nudity and sexual situations.
6. Dolls, avatar edits or anything created by using a premade graphic supplier are not allowed.
7. Don't bribe the judges. It won't work.
8. Every entry is judged based on the quality and effort of the piece, not the person who made it. Therefore, don't expect preferential treatment if you're a friend of ours.
9. When entering a submission, fill out the following order form and PM it to this mule, or e-mail it to tenebrous.forms@gmail.com. Only those artists who cannot (or do not want to) host their own pictures should e-mail them. Otherwise, provide a link to the picture in your PM. DO NOT ATTACH THE PICTURE ITSELF.
10. All entries must be a bare minimum of 500x500 - however, larger pictures are preferred, with no maximum size. Judging preference will also be given to larger entries, so please keep that in mind when scaling your pictures. In fact, we can scale it down for you, if you want.

Grand Prize OverallThis would be for the best overall Gendou in any of his incarnations. Essentially, it doesn't matter if the art is of Inquisitor Gendou with his fellow Inquisitors, or of Necromancer Gendou by himself -- if the art is good enough that it outshines every other piece in all categories, it will win this category.Because all submitted art qualifies for this prize, this is not a entry category. All art submitted for this contest is eligible for this prize.
Best Inquisitor Gendou
Art of Gendou in his Inquisitor form is applicable for this category. He must appear as this form, and no other. He can either be alone or with his two subordinates, Grayed and Eternitian, or with his lover, Ruevian. Preferred art for this category would be battle scenes and romantic couple pictures.Best Necromancer Gendou
Entries for this category must include Gendou as his necromancer version. He can either be alone, or with any of the secondary characters listed in the reference section. Preferred art for this category would be Gendou using his magic and battle scenes.Best MechWarrior Gendou

Notes:
Please note that the hair covering my eye is supposed to be on the character's left. The scars are not only diagonal across my nose, but a vertical one cuts through my left eye, leaving it completely white. Of course, that may not be visible, as it's typically hidden by my scarf and my hair. I can't emphasize enough how important it is that the hair (and thus the blind eye) be on the character's left-hand side. The right eye is red.
Sometimes, I wear Jack's Cape. I'd prefer for this to be a shadowy-tendril thing, not a cloth cape. It's part of my magic, and it's supposed to look like living darkness. Just imagine swirling, insubstantial tendrils reaching out from behind me. As the artist, I leave it up to you whether or not you want to include this aspect of the character - if not, just leave the jack's cape off altogether, as you can see in my current avatar.
I also carry a pair of shadow-katanas (completely magical, with no physical handles - the entire things are made of shadow). They are essentially katanas that look like shadows - smoke-like, grey, translucent and rather insubstantial. As with the Jack's cape, I leave it up to you whether or not to use this aspect of the character.
There is also the option of adding a shadow-claw to the image. Gendou can form the shadows into a claw-like form that covers one or both arms. This is done in lieu of the shadow-katanas, or he may have a shadow-blade in the off-hand while the other hand is a claw.
My character is supposed to be grim, dark and altogether intimidating. As the artist, I leave it up to you the best way to convey that.

Gendou is a tall, stocky man with dark hair and a scarred face. His left eye is white and blind.
When in the cockpit, he wears the standard MechWarrior 'uniform'consisting of a cooling vest and shorts. Most other times, however, he wears the black Chaos Irregulars fatigues, with his rank on the right shoulder and the Chaos Irregulars insignia on the left shoulder.
Gendou's Mech is a PNT-10K Panther and painted completely in charcoal primer, with the 'Can Do' insignia on the left breast and the Chaos Irregulars insignia on the right thigh.
The Panther carries an ERPPC on the right arm and an SRM-4 in the center torso. The ERPPC fires a blue energy beam that crackles with electrical discharge. The SRM-4 fires four short-ranged missiles simultaneously.
The Panther stands roughly thirty-two to thirty-six feet tall.
Preferred artwork would have Gendou in the cockpit of his 'Mech, or standing or sitting outside of the 'Mech - possibly reading technical manuals or trade magazines.

Background:
Gendou Knepper is a Lieutenant with the Chaos Irregulars, a small mercenary RCT originating in the Chaos March. His PNT-10K Panther BattleMech, the "Can Do," is a relic from his former command, Sorenson's Strikers, one of the two mercenary units that formed the Chaos Irregulars.
Lt. Knepper is a quiet man with a penchant for reading tech manuals and dreaming about upgrades for his 'Mech that he can never afford. His preference in battle is to find a safe position from which to fire his long-ranged main weapon, reserving the short-ranged weapons for anyone who happens to stumble upon him.

Notes:
Eternitian has been with Gendou the longest, and therefore is the second-in-command of the Inquisitor trio, or as Gendou himself often puts it, his "lieutenant." Due to a lengthy sojourn into the Chatterbox, Eternitian went through a rather painful mutation, gaining blue wings that he usually hides under his coat.
The ninja headband would likely bear the Inquisitor symbol, as opposed to the wing that is Gaia's symbol. Like Gendou, he wears the Inquisitor badge on his coat.

If angry, she's withdrawn, but otherwise she's informal and blunt. Under stress, she's driven by necessity, but when the mood is light she acts on impulse.
She is not intimidating or unapproachable, but appears aloof or cold to those who don't know her well.
Notes:
She always carries her staff either in a hand, over a shoulder, or diagonally across her back.
Grayed is the newest (and likely last) addition to the Inquisitor Trio, and therefore less experienced. Her rank is Journeyman, though Gendou has referred to both Grayed and Eternitian as his "apprentices." Like Gendou and Eternitian, she wears the Inquisitor badge on her coat.

Notes:
Ruevian and Gendou have had a very turbulent relationship. After discovering that foul play was afoot in the Society, Gendou rather abruptly left his lover to investigate, telling her nothing for fear of his enemies using her to get to him. Ruevian, however, didn't take it so well. After nursing a betrayed and broken heart for a few days, she set out after him, searching for a very, very long time and always coming up short. A shell of what she used to be, she joined the Society as a Watcher (the spies of the Society), only to be astounded in a reunion with Gendou.
Now they're back together, but Ruevian is almost desperate when it comes to keeping Gendou in her sight, as she's always afraid he's going to leave her again.
Despite their reunion, Ruevian's social skills and general emotiveness have deteriorated to the point that her eyes seem "dead." Artistically speaking, they would be drawn dulller, blanker and darker than the normal eye.

How many entries are needed for a prize to be awarded?
There must be a minimum of ten entries in each category for a prize to be awarded. If there are not enough entries, the contest deadline may be extended, or two or more categories may be rolled into one. How many entries can I make?
As many as you like, but only one of them counts towards the minimum number of entries needed. You may also win only one prize. What kind of things does Gendou like?
Gendou really wants to see a lot of MechWarrior entries, as he has almost no art at all in that category. He also likes battle scenes and other art that shows off his characters' skills, abilities and personalities. Also, he will give judging preference to larger images, so please keep that in mind when scaling your entries.Who the hell is Ruevian?
Ruevian is Gendou's RL wife and pretty much the creator and maintainer of this thread.What is/are "tenebrous forms?"
