The Opening Ceremony

It was only a half hour after dawn. The sun was bright, and the clouds were white and sparse. No one could ask for a nicer day. Dozens and dozens of contestants were boarded upon grand festival floats that represented who they were and what they were representing.

A score or more of contestants for different sports, or students from Gardens participating in the events occupied these decadent vehicles. Around them on all sides, at least forty parade performers each, most of whom came from the same country. All of these people would be introduced from a cavalcade of cameras that would be recording from damn near all angles, and brought for the forefront of the world view.

As the filming went live, a woman's voice cut over the panning shots of Eden City. Many would recognize her voice as the star radiohost in Timber, and those older than that would recognize her from her brother's own career as an announcer. Yuka Spaeckmaester. She did not introduce herself, only began to go over the long history of the Grand Concert and what it meant to all. What it was meant to mean, and what it meant for the future.

With an overhead shot a camera flew over the Trabia Representatives. Their dancers and their float were geared up to replicate the appearance of monsters, and the participants themselves gave off a rugged look. Whether this was their nature, or part of the show was never given, but the flag bearers up front bore their duty with pride. It was clear as day.

This was when the sky went dark. Clouds swarmed over Eden City. Lightning roiled through the sky, before it lit up under a deluge of fireworks. In the center, using lightning to make a show was the Guardian Force Quetzalcoatl. In surprisingly well time with the fireworks, the sky lit up again as the small interlude ended and the camera's zoomed over to the next country.

Esthar. Perhaps repetitive, perhaps iconic, Esthar's representatives continued with the space theme they had the last few years. The Float itself was a replica of the space station, the dancer's lit up like cosmic bodies and mist flowed about them. The contestants themselves geared to be astronauts, though they did not wear helmets, so all could see their faces. The flagbearers here swelled with joy, including a recurring attendee Robin.

Water swirled just outside of Eden, a unfortunate old fashioned ship caught by the raging seas. Upon the bow a woman fought against the waves for a moment, before she began to sing Opera. Her voice was powerful, and even with all the natural ambiance that should quiet her, she was the loudest thing upon the seas. The show went on as Leviathan showed himself, the great kraken to destroy the ship, yet he was laid low by the woman's voice, and peace returned to the sea.

So we turn to Balamb. Aquatic themes, the dancers themed from merfolk with water up to their necks, and they performed artistic aquatic dances. Their representatives were all seafarers of all types whilst standing upon their grand ship. Each of the flagbearers held their standards in the Captain Morgan pose.

With roughly the halftime met, a series of musical performers were brought out. A pop star from 'Timber' as it was shown, a metal band out of Balamb, a country singer from Centra, and a electronic duo out of Esthar. When the finale of the half-time showed, there was a final violin duet done by a young duo of girls who were meant to show the potential of the future, as described by their chosen song. Many would recognize these as the children of world leaders, Nyale Laytos, and Rem Estellise La Faustina Nipal.

The next nation to be displayed were the people of Winhill, with a giant Windmill being their thematic float. Wind seemed to constantly be pouring from all around them, giving their long clothes a very fluid aesthetic, with the dancers themed as birds soaring through the breeze. It seemed a strong representation of the peaceful life Winhill brought it's people.

The sun now was beginning to head down. The shadows cast becoming long, and backed by fire, a group of performers seemed to bring on the night as they played their drums and danced the sun away. It was a dance of Centra, a old tale of theirs told in song and dance, and as they went silent, the camera's moved along to their nation.

The Centran float was aesthetically odd. Seemed to be build around the design of a giant diamond, and the dancers all dressed in armor. They performed acrobatic swordplay while their patrons watched from aboard the float. A call back to the old Centra before the Lunar Cry destroyed it, the ones aboard were all styled after a Sorceress from the past. A controversial take perhaps, but one that stuck with many.

The final showing was of a songstress. She was simply on a exterior stage, and alongside a piano performance belted her heart out with 'Eyes On Me', a Galbadian classic that had remained popular ever since it was penned. It was markedly shorter than the other performances as the camera went to the last and least country. Galbadia.

All of the Performers were in military uniforms, and performing a remarkable drill routine with their gunblades. Even using the firing mechanism to reverse the repeated flips they performed midair. With the rounds given a extra cosmetic charge, it made them stand out. The float was shaped after the Galbadian Garden, and the representatives dressed in their respective uniforms. Civilians were military dress, SeeD were Garden dress, most of them standing at attention except for the flag bearers. The standard bearers towards the end of their showing performed a small routine in time with their performers below, and as the camera swooped by the last time the candidates in unison gave a salute.

This final showing was not received positively from across the world, sans Galbadia, but it was quickly swept under the rug by heading towards the outro of the event. Night had now fallen, and in the presidential office over looking the Concert grounds stood Salem. Though he's aged and now pushing forty, his catered lifestyle and more importantly all the time pre-show for makeup kept him looking a decade younger than he was. He ended the show with a walk-through of the presidential palace and out onto the grounds with his violin and dance.

To meet him at the end of it was Nona, and as he reached the end, he passed a fire over to Nona, which she used to light a grand brazier that flooded the city with fire sourced from this grand brazier. Lighting up the city in the midst of the night, before a final show of fireworks called the ceremony to a close.

All said and done, it was a little after eight in the evening, and finally all the representatives were allowed to go loose and enjoy the rest of their evening. To meet new friends and prospective rivals, before the competitions began the next day.

Rem Estellise La Faustina Nipal

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

”This way,” guides Rem, walking backward with a crate of canvases in her arms. She’s trailed by a forklift creeping its way toward the loading dock. Behind the curtains of the grand stage is a buzzing beehive of logistics and support! Engineers, teamsters, technicians, and experts of all stripes move about in controlled chaos.

”Keep going. A little more-”

Oop!

Her back bumps into someone’s front! Rem whips around to see none other than her mother looking down at her with exasperated fondness.

”Girl, you did not put on your dress uniform to spend the night striking sets,” Nona says, pulling the crate from her daughter’s hands to set it on the ground.

”But mother, no one else can coordinate all this!” Rem protests. She’s tall enough to look her mother in the eye now. Feels wrong.

”I can.”

”You’re too important! You should be out there-”

”What’s important is that young people live their damn lives, girl. I brought the entire world to your doorstep. Go experience it.”

Rem puffed her cheeks out at her mother in a pout. It met a steel gaze. At last, she deflated and spilled into a chuckle. Nona smiled.

”Thanks, mom,” Rem said, just audible over the sound of vans reversing, and steps in to a hug.

”Love you.”

Knock knock

Rem found the door to the studio prep room open. It was just down the hall from the one she’d used earlier. Nothing big- space was always at a premium in Unita- but enough space for a performer or two to prepare for their part in the ceremonies. And to her pleasure, she found a pale young woman with striking white hair.

"Nyale,” she addressed, putting on a practiced but warm smile. It wasn’t the first time they’d met, but it was the first time they’d had in extended company, able to spend the last few days practicing their duet. That was business, however. Tonight…

”Would you care to join me for the festival?”

Soon after, the two young ladies wandered down a grand avenue, passing flashing games and shops set up with banners and lights and the most enticing foods on offer. Crab legs fried alongside armadodo steak. Games offered monster masks and toy weapons and stuffed animals ranging from bears to blobras.

Rem looked her best after the performance. She swaggered her way across Eden City in a fine, understated dress uniform. No weapons in sight. Her red hair was done up flawlessly for the concert. Her voice still tingled with the air of nerves Nyale knew after a show.

”Here. This shop has the best kebab this side of the Great Bridge!” she declared, leading Nyale to a stand swaddled in red and black banners.

”Two of your best, Mr. Maru.”

“Only the best for you, Ms. Rem,” the older man assured as he moved to his grill. “No charge for a Nipal on festival day.”

The girls left the place with stakes of seared meat in-hand, dripping a rich sauce. The meat was wonderfully tender even thoroughly cooked!

”It’s torama haunch,” Rem explained to Nyale. ”Only Mr. Maru knows the secret to keeping the tingly flavor sealed inside. Says it’s part of the beast’s magic,” she chuckled. She ate with prim, proper bites, and savored each bite with the patient air of a gourmet.

In the studio prep room Nyale forced herself to take a calming breath. The grin plastered on her face since leaving the stage showed no signs of fading, however, even if her cheeks were starting to ache.

She was still buzzing from the thrill of the performance earlier, but now she steadied herself so as to carefully pack away her violin in its wooden case without the hindrance of shaky fingers.

"Those lessons with uncle Salem paid off, so I better buy him a drink I guess..." She quipped to herself, smirking.
The case snapped shut with a satisfying click and she set it safely aside to collect later, just in time...

                                          Knock knock

Ny spun around, amber eyes fixing on the poised young woman at the door with the elegant up-do, who was inviting her to join her in the festival celebrations. Rem Nipal, her exceptionally talented duet partner for the performance...and daughter of Nona and Lloyd, two of the most famous figures in the world, who Ny knew had helped save her own life many many years ago...

"Rem! Darling! I'd be honoured" She winked at the red-head and followed her out the room, eager to join the festivities.

                                          _______________________

Outside, the streets of UNITA were alive with noise, crowds, lights, and to Ny's delight, the delicious aroma of hundreds of types of exotic foods wafting over the stalls. Wandering down the avenue with her companion she felt her attention pulled in every single direction, there was so much to see. This was Ny's first time at the Great Concert and so far, it was safe to say Winhill was a distant, fast-fading memory for her right now.

"Oh my god Rem you might have to stop me, I want to eat absolutely everything right now" Ny exclaimed, her eyes wide and stomach growling.

Soon enough thankfully Rem guided her to a stand with black and red banners, with the friendly Mr Maru handing them their kebabs. It was no surprise to Ny that the man held Rem in high esteem, given who she was. Ny would have been happy to pay for them both but she certainly wouldn't turn down a free meal either. In any case, she was glad to be experiencing the festival with her musical comrade and enjoying the benefits of her high reputation.

                                          "Oooh thanks!"

Unlike her refined friend Ny ate the kebab with rapid, undignified gusto, licking her lips to get every last taste of the delicious sauce. By some miracle she managed to avoid getting sauce on her white/gold tunic, which was a rare win for her. She ate the thing in approximately 30 seconds, let out a satisfied sigh, and then watched Rem as she slowly worked on her own kebab.

"Well I've never eaten Torama before but I'm for sure going to recommend to my mother that we start serving that at Winhill Garden. Maybe I can charm Mr Maru into giving up the secret" Ny teased as she wiped her sticky fingers with a napkin and then carefully disposed of it into a garbage can nearby.

When the other girl had finished eating she continued speaking, gesturing around at the vibrant festival.

"You know Rem, this is my first actual visit to UNITA, so I really do appreciate you showing me around. This atmosphere is SO much more exciting than back home. I have so many questions too! How many times have you held the Great Concert now? Did you help set it up? Are you competing in anything? If so you had better tell me so I can come and watch you-"

She peppered Rem with questions as she gazed around, enjoying the ambiance. Out of habit her now sauce-less fingers twirled a strand of her long white hair between them. If anyone here recognised her as the young sorceress from Winhill, Ny was mercifully oblivious amidst the hubbub.

"By the way, we killed that performance earlier. Highlight of the day, in my opinion"
Ny's tone was full of self-assurance, so whether she was joking or not about the last part wasn't entirely clear.

"Also, I don't suppose you would know where a girl can get a drink around here?" She said nonchalantly, a shadow of mischief on her lips.

She turned to face Rem again, a glimmer of curiosity in her expression as she met her eyes. She didn't know her super well yet, but she could tell that despite being younger than her the ambassador cadet of UNITA was more mature and composed. She was interested in knowing more about her inscrutable new friend, especially given all the stories she'd heard about Rem's parents from her own. Thankfully, the night was still young...

┏━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━═✥═━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┓

"Koyuki!!! Come on! Don't be so grumpy! It's a festival! Smile a little! Your cold gaze makes strangers avoid us like the plague! We gotta be more cheerful if we want people to approach us! The ever bubbly Selphie shouted at her fellow Trabian, practically dragging Koyuki by her arm. Only Selphie could have the sheer confidence and attitude to drag Koyuki around by force, and surprisingly, she got away with a lot of her antics around Koyuki. Despite such a personality clash and downright way of thinking, Koyuki had always respected and allowed Selphie plenty of room to do as she pleased.

For the younger SeeD cadets, who watched on in bafflement with the way Selphie consistently was dragging the headmaster along in the garden in Trabia, they were truly bewildered by her actions wondering just how she managed to get such leniency. To the veterans, Selphie was the most respected and loved First Class in the Garden, bringing on some much needed warmth to everyone where very little could be found. In such dire hostile environments, her love and guidance to the younger generations allowed for some to find a strong bond in their fellow classmate and teammates. Even in some rare cases, can warm even Koyuki to some degree. Perhaps that was why she allowed for such antics, and though she truly did not want to be here at this concert, she was convinced by Selphie, and her daughter, to come. She had not seen Yukiko yet, she, having arrived a few days ahead of time to visit with her cousins, aunt, and uncle to help set up some of the events for them, and to help with rehearsals. Yukiko, herself, was not part of the events that were going on, preferring to take a more technical route with lighting and effects.

Once they reached their seating, Selphie stood beside Koyuki with her hands on her hips, almost like a mother getting ready to chide their child. "Alright! Now try to enjoy the show okay! I gotta go find my man! He's probably out looking for me as we speak! But seriously! Try to relax a bit more! It's supposed to be fun! Kay, Bye! And just like that, Selphie skipped off with a humming tune, quite literally bouncing her way over to find Irvine, leaving Koyuki with the others. Babel, Koyuki's secretary, laughed with some amusement over Selphie's little chide on their headmaster causing Koyuki to glare at her. Babel confidently grinned at the headmaster's icy gaze and leaned forward to her, raising her right hand up to her own cheek to almost present herself as enjoying such a staredown. "She is right, you know. You've been awfully in a sour mood lately, much more than usual. You need a break from work. Don't worry about the garden right now. Everyone is putting in the extra effort to lockdown and secure the perimeters while we are away. Defenses are up, and we can rest easy knowing its protected."

After that statement, Koyuki's icy glare lessened into a somber and calm one. Reaching her hand into her pocket, she pulled out a pack of cigarettes and lit one up for herself. She had been unnaturally... quieter than usual, the others having noticed her mood being a bit more volatile than it normally was. She was a hardass normally, but she rarely if ever lashed out at anyone. But recently in their excursions to fight monsters, her fighting had been off, much more aggressive, taking more damage than she needed to, taking on much tougher fights head on, than thinking about a strategy. Everyone in the squad agreed she was off, and needed to take some time to recover. No one could get a word out of her as to what was bothering her or affecting her mood, not even Selphie despite her efforts, and she had the best chance out of everyone. For now, the group stayed by her, in both a means to protect her and look out for her, and to also be here for her.

Tsitsho had taken to sitting beside Hayahiko, the two were often a pair in the squad, Tsitsho taking range while Hayahiko supported and defended him. Although they were here to enjoy the festival and support their squad member, their eyes were strictly focus on their surroundings, keeping an eye on anything off going on in the distance while Varitas was strictly paying attention to their immediate surroundings. Varitas was not a member of Trabia Garden like the others were, rather, he was a hired monster hunter, and often was paid for both his services and materials he gathered on his own while living off the land in Trabia; a feat not so easily achieved and one that Koyuki respected to incredible degree that they often were duo partners when fighting monsters. It was his examination of her combat that lead to the others finding out that she was off game in the first place, and after observing her a bit further, came to the decision that they did.

Once the concert began, and Selphie found her man, the concert seemed to go off without a htich, and though the lights and music did little the change Koyuki's attitude, the group was having a grand time! Especially Selphie who was singing her heart out, cheering and being the life of the party! The others all watched in some levels of enjoyment, though majority were focusing on their guard duties.
===============
As the evening came, Koyuki and the squad had taken to staying at a much smaller hotel, less renown and known. Preferring to lay low rather than have any attention on their arrival. They did this for the purposes of protection and to keep Koyuki from having to talk to anyone if she didn't have to. She appeared to be on auto pilot, her expression barely changing, but everyone was noticing how often she was chain smoking packs of cigarettes throughout the day. She was already on her third pack by the end of the night as she took a seat on the balcony, overlooking the streets below on the third floor. Her silence was defeaning, even in the crowds and music and life that brimmed with the streets. It was such a contrast to the way she stared down upon everyone that the group looked on quietly. Their concerns growing. Something was wrong.

Rem Estellise La Faustina Nipal

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the pressure off, Rem found Nyale to be splendid company! The two girls had met twice before in the tangential way that children with influential parents came together.

”I’m glad I can,” Rem assured, her smile practiced and yet warm. ”I remember seeing you when we were younger. Always across a meeting room.”

Things had always been…awkward was a charitable word. While Lloyd was ever friendly, Nona Nipal kept herself at arms’ reach from the Laytos family, only ever discussing practical matters. But…even that was softening, from the interactions Rem had watched the past week.

Time heals.

”This is the Fifth,” she answered with no small amount of pride. ”I got to help out last time, but I was still mostly doing kid work. Painting signs, running errands,” she waved a hand sporting a silky half-glove. The girl reeked of practiced pageantry, without ever seeming false for it.

For example, the open flattery made her beam with a youthful radiance.

”You bet we did,” she agreed, unable to stifle her own cheek-aching smile. ”My heart’s still thudding like a trawler engine!” She paused, coughed into a hand. That was one of Lloyd’s speechisms- the kind she tried not to absorb. ”I’ll actually be playing tomorrow afternoon, on the stage near the watchtower. I’d love to have you come!”

And then, sweet, bright Nyale asked the million-gil question.

Rem’s carmine eyebrows shot up in surprise. Her sea-blue gaze made a quick, furtive sweep around them, before her lips curled into a knowing grin.

”Follow me~”

Not too far back to the stadium. They slipped in through another staff entrance- passing through a subtle grey door that Nyale hadn’t even seen as they neared! Through a short tunnel beneath, they reached the central stage once again, from another angle. ‘Round the back, behind the curtains and lights, up the bare scaffolding steps. Up, and up, toward the top of the grand building, until Rem led her into the metal walkways which passed over the stage, hidden from view of the audience. Up there stood countless lights, ropes, pulleys, curtains, props, and stage tools of all sorts. Anything you might need to make an image or a sound, it was there, somewhere!

Fwee-hee~

Yukiko recognized the sound instantly. A Trabian robin! A bird that never came even close to this corner of the world. Which was why it made the perfect covert signal for the girls a couple of years ago, when one or the other of them were able to sneak something back to the house. A six-pack, a bottle of wine, some ghysal blunts…

”Yuki!” she greeted with a bright grin and outstretched arms when the girl turned around, stepping in for a hug. Yukiko had occupied a strange place in the Nipal-Vicaria household for some time, but she was close to Rem’s heart. How the poor girl kept a firefly spark of life in her with her upbringing baffled the Princess. However, she’d kept her promise to show Yukiko what it was like to have a real childhood.

Including sneaking drinks and drugs past the folks.

Rem drew up short when she spotted a figure blending into the shadows of the walkway further down. Her smile vanished into a composed confusion.

”Mz. Zeigmus, Rem greeted this time with polite formality. She met Yukiko’s eye, then purposely guided her gaze to the beer Yuki was still holding.

What’s with the stray billionaire?

Xaris Zeigmus, Yukiko Rieko

┏━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━═✥═━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┓

Yukiko had been in the midst of doing her work, coordinating with the staff to ensure that the light show wasn't interrupted or timed poorly. She was such in a groove of things that she hadn't even noticed that she had company up on the balcony with her at first. With headphones on her head, she was lost in the zone of her work that when she felt a finger tapping on her shoulder, she about jumped out of her skin and turned ready to fight, but stopped herself when she noticed it was a woman clothed in a black leotard? A strange getup, and armed? That wasn't entirely something she was expecting, but removing her headphones for a moment she spoke to the elder woman. "Can I help you, miss?" She asked her in a slight confused tone, not entirely sure what this woman wanted.

Xaris looked down upon Yukiko, her impression of the girl was one of approval. She could tell right off the bat she was a trained fighter, her build and reaction proving that. The more she looked upon the girl, an image flashed up in her head, Koyuki's face came to mind, and she could see that this girl was her daughter. She had been given reports about all of the children of Koyuki, and now that she got a good look at her, she could see the resemblance. She definitely had a much bigger range of emotions than her mother though, that was easy to tell right from the beginning. Not wasting time, Xaris spoke. "I just wished to inform you that I will be seated right over the balcony, the lights hurt my eyes." Without much else being said, she moved on, taking her position.

Hearing that, Yukiko was a bit nervous about having some random person up here with her, but with the woman armed and not making much of a fuss, Yukiko opted to just leave that be. She nodded to the woman, getting back to work while keeping an eye on Xaris every so often to make sure there wasn't going to be some kind of international incident. But nothing happened, and Xaris didn't make much of a sound or peep for the entirety of the show. Yukiko had to admit that the company wasn't entirely bad, and Xaris didn't make much effort to make her feel uncomfortable with her presence. For that alone Yukiko let her be for the time.

At the end of the show, Yukiko sighed and put her headphones down, making her way over to her satchel that was seated on her chair, digging inside of it and grabbing a bottle of hard liquor. She had grown to enjoy the taste of drinking in her time hanging with Rem. Her usual strict lifestyle would never allow her to have time to drink or smoke with Rem, but here in Unita, getting a hold of alcohol and recreational drugs felt practically effortless. Today was no exception as she took out a shot glass for herself, tossing the satchel to the ground as she kicked back in the chair, drinking by herself.

Xaris remained where she was seated, watching as the audience left, and eventually even her target that she was protecting had gone away. It was time to relax for a bit, take a break, and she did so, setting aside her spears and yawning as she took a stretch from her seated position. Her eyes shifted over to Yukiko was drinking alone. Normally, she wouldn't be drinking with a teenager, but better it be her getting in trouble than Yukiko. So, she made her way on over to the girl, speaking up. "Mind if I have a shot?" She asked, once more causing Yukiko to jump. The woman was abnormally swift and quick with her movments to the point that Yukiko didn't even hear Xaris move even with all the gear strapped to her body. A dangerous woman indeed. Pouring her a shot, Yukiko decided to ask about her. "Who are you, if I may ask?" Xaris, taking her shot, replied immediately after, not minding the question at all. "President of Hugin Industries. Xaris Zeigmus." She introduced herself, causing Yukiko to be utterly shocked that a billionare was here with her.

Not long after, Rem and Nyale had found themselves up on the balcony, and the bird whistle caused Yukiko to shift her attention over to her cousin with a smile. She didn't expect her cousin to be coming up to join her, considering she had diplomatic things she had to do tonight. Apparently that involved bringing drinking with a diplomat. Yukiko never met Nyale, but she heard stories about Winhill and the people of the Garden there. This would be the first time she got to meet a representitive of the garden.

On the other hand, Xaris knew exactly who Nyale Laytos was. In fact, her presence was a shock to Xaris who's eyes almost gave that away. It didn't stay that way forever, her expression softening as her eyes stared upon Nyale specifically out of everyone, much longer in fact that it was definitely noticeable. "Hey Rem! Uhh... Right uh... she's up here cause she said the lights were hurting her." Breaking the awkward silent, Yukiko called out and Xaris's eyes shifted from Nyale after that. Handing Yukiko her shot glass, Xaris turned to leave but not before speaking to Yukiko. "Don't worry young ladies. I won't ruin your fun. I am just about to take my leave." She reassured them, having no need or interest to party with the youth. As she walked off, she passed by Nyale, speaking to her as she did. "You've grown. Nyale Laytos." Was all she said to her, and for what significance that Xaris played in her life, well, Yukiko or Rem may not have known that, but for Nyale, this was the woman who nearly killed her as a baby.

Ny cracked a wide grin at Rem, pleased to see her composed demeanor becoming more relaxed and playful by the minute. Though she still kept her natural air of sophistication about her, probably a result of her upbringing, Ny contemplated, noticing the silky glove and the way she waved her hand.

She grinned even wider when Rem then gave a furtive look around and bade her follow. "Rem, Rem, you dark horse..." Ny snickered quietly, hustling after the girl. She was a little surprised, but pleasantly so. Meanwhile the tiny voice of reason in the back of her mind warned her what Nona's reaction would probably be if she caught them....but Ny easily ignored it...for now.

Her surprise steadily increased as her companion led her back towards the stadium and through a shady back door into a tunnel, popping out into the central stage before heading around the back and beginning the long climb up the scaffolding.

"It's a good thing I like heights, huh?" Nyale laughed as she followed Rem up the steps and onto the metal walkways. She almost gasped at the view, suddenly realising just how high up they were. "As sketchy drinking hangouts go, this is pretty sweet I'll admit" She noted.

The unexpected bird noise stopped her in her tracks for a moment, until she realised it was Rem making the sound. Ny tilted her head, brows furrowed into a curious frown, then relaxing as she noticed the other young girl sequestered up here. Of course. A signal. These UNITA kids were pretty switched on, it seemed. Rem stepped in for the hug while Ny approached slowly, offering a friendly smile and a wave.

                                          Yuki...

"Hey girl, I heard this is where the real party is at" Ny greeted, shooting a sly look at Rem.

Like Rem, however, her smile also faded when she noticed the other woman in the shadows. Mostly because the woman was staring directly at her, with what Nyale judged to be a somewhat unnerving expression. Ny paused, taking in Xaris head to foot while her distant memory set off alarm bells. Darkness, cold, and pain...

                                          Ms Zeigmus

That's what Rem had called her. It was a name Ny was familiar with, for unpleasant reasons.

                                          It couldn't be....could it?

The young sorceress felt her spine lock into place and a shiver run through her. The silence seemed to stretch on forever and her eyes narrowed as she watched Xaris walk towards her. The woman had a dark aura that made Nyale's whole body stiffen with discomfort. And then Xaris spoke.

"I'm lucky I got the chance" Ny responded slightly coldly, her gaze fixed on Xaris as the woman stalked past her. She thought about saying more, but a quick glance at Rem made her bite her tongue. She wasn't here to cause an international incident, even if she had just met the very first person who tried to kill her in her life.

With a huff and a decidedly casual flick of her hair she carried on walking, heading over to stand near Rem and Yuki.

"What's our poison this evening then, ladies?" She chimed, forcing a smile onto her face and trying to shake off the bad vibes.

Rem Estellise La Faustina Nipal

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rem knew. Nyale knew Rem knew. Their eyes met, and hers were full of worry.

But as suddenly as she’d appeared, she vanished. Rem stared after her, into the shadows of the curtain labyrinth. She’d never been this close to the Black Angel!

She shook out of it a moment too late and went tumbling into the conversation.

“Good old 18% Fisherman’s Delight!” She snatched a dark brown bottle from the cooler and handed one first to Yukiko. With a smooth motion, she uncapped the bottle and slipped it into Yukiko’s hand. “All the way from papa’s home, from a brewery that’s been around since before the First War. Here’s the gil, thanks again,” and flipped a hefty brass coin her way.

The next bottle goes to Nyale and is similarly cracked open. ”Nyale, this is my cousin, Yukiko,” she introduced with pride. ”She’s been like another sister to me ever since she came to Unita.”

The last bottle is her own.

The whiff of alcohol is a stab in the nostrils, in no small part due to the unique methods of the fisherfolk.

”To friends?” she offers, raising up her bottle for a toast.

Only fitting, for a Great Concert to bring people together!

Glasses clink, the trio each share the first sip of the evening.

”I love those opening ceremonies,” she mused, wandering her way to another protruding piece of scaffolding and perching upon it. ”Nations actually concerned with art. Putting down the guns to make something beautiful. Even if it’s only for a few days.”

Pull.

”Have you got a plan tonight, Yuki?” she inquired, dangling her legs over the ledge. ”I’m planning to show Nyale the best of the Concert. I know the best snacks, best games, best sights, best everything!”

Now, how did that sound familiar? Like a certain snooty little girl declaring she would show Yukiko how to be a child.

Xaris Zeigmus, Yukiko Rieko

Nyale's response had the billionaire stop for a moment, her gaze shifting back to Nyale's comment. "I hope you've made the most of it." She replied as she then made her way down the stairs to let Nyale and the others drink. She would take her time, making her way over to a less populated area of the city, preferring the darker areas away from all the lights. If she was going to be needed by Marcus, she was simply a call away.

With Xaris gone and Rem pushing forward with the festivities between the three. Yukiko was excited to get to know Rem's acquaintance. "Pleasure to meet'ya." She saluted Nyale, giving her a grin and looking excited to drink with the girls. When was the last time she had this much fun back home? Perhaps she would have to figure out how to bring more joy into people's lives in Trabia. Selphie did her part, and it was because of that influence and Rem's family as well, that Yukiko turned out as free flowing as she was.

A toast to a night of success, regardless of the bad of the past, and she intended to get s**t faced. "Get drunk probably, so partying with you two sounds like a blast!" She answered honestly to her cousin, giggling as she clutched another bottle of alcohol, Timber Bourbon Whiskey. Something that she had grown fond of in her time and experience drinking. She was downing it shot for shot with the girls and having quite a bit of fun, and apparently could hold her liquor much more than expected.

Although Ny kept her attention on the two girls next to her, her instincts were hyper focused on Xaris exiting the platform. Only when her dark aura had faded into the distance and it was clear she was gone did Ny breathe easily again. Meeting Xaris had rattled her, but she tried at least not to let it show too much and only allowed herself a little shake of the head, as if to physically throw off the feeling. What was also interesting to Ny was that Rem clearly understood the situation, judging by her worried expression, and knew exactly what had happened back then. It was always a strange feeling for Nyale, to discover that so many others knew the drama of her early life.

She took the bottle offered by Rem with a grateful nod as the introductions were made.

"Oh the pleasure is mine, Yuki. Nyale Laytos, of Winhill" She proclaimed, returning Yuki's cute salute with a cheeky wink. She knew vaguely of Yukiko as the daughter of the headmaster of Trabia Garden, and from snippets of information from Kalen as his long-lost sister, though they had never met before. This one likes her tech... She mused, taking in the girl's outfit and gadgets with interest. "So great to finally meet you, from hearing about you from your brother..."

"To friends" She agreed, toasting her new companions with a cat-like grin. The sharp smell of the alcohol hit her nose as she raised her bottle to take a swig, making her eyes widen, but she continued anyway. "Yeah that'll do it" She laughed, swallowing down the strong liquid.

"Mmm. It's all because of your mom's vision. Pretty amazing..." She replied to Rem's comment about the ceremony."What were your thoughts on the Galbadian display?" She probed, shooting Rem a speculative look. "A bit provocative, if you ask me..." She took another drink.

At Rem's insistence on showing her the best of the festival, Ny raised her bottle to show her support of this plan and smirked, then snorted with laughter at Yuki's response about getting wasted.

"Oh I've definitely come to the right place then. What's that you're drinking Yuki? Mind if I have a taste?" She closed the distance between her and Yuki, angling for a shot of whatever it was the girl was throwing back like water.

"You girls are going to see some fun airborne acrobatics from me before long if we keep this up. I used to drive Kalen mad when we would secretly drink at Winhill. I'd go flying off trying to do rolls or dive-bombing him and end up...uh...crashing into trees" She explained, grinning at the memory. Speaking of it, her thoughts turned to her childhood friend, wondering briefly where he was this night. It had been a long time since she'd seen or heard from him, with him off traveling and then eventually returning home, so she figured she would see him around the city at some point. I'll have to hunt him down and surprise him... She thought, somewhat deviously considering how she could scare the daylights out of him with a sneak attack.

Kiss me good-bye, love's memory
Follow your heart and find your destiny
Won't shed a tear, for love's mortality
For you put the dream in my reality

The Grand Concert was always an extravagant affair wasn’t it?

The giant floats with the various troupes dancing brought forth a myriad of seemingly far distant memories, dancing in competitions and practicing in the barn late at night with Rem when they were young. It was engaging to sit in one of the stands to watch as they passed and observe the technique, versus having to ignore and focus on your movements and demanding exact precision with exact timing to demand the most satisfying result. He missed it, perhaps, thinking about the applause that would rain down upon him after each of the performances in his youth. A lovely memory, one the blonde hair desperado mused over fondly as he walked down the light filled district towards a seemingly random destination, revolver on his waist, a wakizashi on the opposite side, and dressed in a fine long sleeve shirt and and matching vest. If anything, the appearance he gave was of a young and strapped gentleman, reminiscent of a Doc Holliday in his prime, with a rambunctious energy whilst he sauntered his way through the streets.

All that and you’d never know he stopped dancing due to stage fright. Looks of confidence could certainly deceive, wouldn’t they?

Not that it had any damper on Kalen Rae Nipal Vicaria’s name. The light and glamour of the Grand Concert had the entire world seemingly alight in an atmospheric vibe, the crowds happy and enjoying the mirth that games and food brought to them, families indulging in the delights that came once every so often. Food from all around the world had found its way to UNITA; the smells taunting Kalen’s nose with lilting scents that he had partaken in while traveling. Perhaps that was why he wasn’t too bothered with stopping and eating everything that he had come across, rather making small selections of his favorites as he wasn’t rather hungry at the moment. Rather, the mind had been wandering back towards the events of the day, arriving with his chocobo (who remained in a local chocobo keeper’s pen after the great deal of travel), having had stopped at Winhill before, the place he had went to school and graduated him. He had done everything proper to eventually become a SeeD but, he had never followed through. The trip itself was nice…but he came with a purpose.

Well, that was what he was on his way to inform someone.

A few people had recognized Kalen already, trying to keep a low profile so that he didn’t get bombarded by people greeting him, perhaps a fangirl or ten halting him, or even people stopping him to sign a book or five. Generally it had been people, vendors specifically, that he had grown up around and waved him down to hug him and force him to try their latest wares. Mr. Maru had been one of those few, Kalen himself knowing that he could not stop himself from sampling the haunch that he and Rem had grown up eating as almost legendary UNITA cuisine. Even now he was licking his fingers and lost in the sauce that the chef had brought to fruition with the meat, a tantalizing taste that was somehow sweet and succulent, a meat that was tender enough to collapse off the bone at the slightest amount of pressure. Heaven.

A few shops were selling the regular “I ❤️ UNITA,” the presidential family figures (Kalen’s was not up to date, his long hair having been cut down greatly before he made his return trip to UNITA, his stop in Winhill being not only to wash his clothes but to get properly groomed and his hair trimmed), and other such novelties, even including his magazine/almanac “The Big Book of Monsters, Places, and Things.” He had a few volumes out now and books filled with even more notes and drawings for a plenty of newer copies, having been essentially on the road since turning seventeen and graduating from the Winhill SeeD academy. He had never gone all the way with it, which is why he was sans Guardian Force, but even in his ventures he had never bonded with one of those beings, only ever drawing and observing. Perhaps Kalen himself just had no interest in any of them.

All these things had essentially culminated into what he was doing today though, his mind even coming to think about what would come next as he had watched Nyale and Rem perform together, bringing a smile to his face as he remembered their performance. His sister and best friend had killed it, playing beautifully together in a way that had had him leaning forward as the piece had continued. Music was such a joy, their performance even pushing to maybe have him try to sing and maybe dance again, but the abject terror that grew in his gut had stalled that thought in its tracks. Rather, he walked down the street and hummed the melody that they had played, harmonizing with the phantom leads and thinking about how well received they were.

Eventually though, the light haired blonde came to the location that he had been slowly and carefully snooping out, asking his fellow UNITA residents where the infamously famous woman was slaving away, a victim to her own passion and drive (a joke of course). The streets had eventually moved to less stands and more towards workers and engineers moving and prepping for the next day of events, eventually revealing the red haired woman, scarred with burns from a war long since past but regal in appearance with her presidential attire, that he had been looking for through his pilgrimage amongst the festivities.

Nona Nipal.

He got himself together before addressing her, a few workers smiling and saying hello.

”Hey Mom…I’m home.”

A small smile painted itself across his face, and the new shorter cut hair accentuating his youthful and handsome face. That hair had not been touched for 10 years, having been all the way past his waist at its longest.

He WAS home, wasn’t he?

Rem Estellise La Faustina Nipal

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just like that, the three young women were bound by the strings of fate! It was to be a night to remember! If it didn’t drown in imported beer.

”Ugh, talk about tasteless,” she seconded Nyale’s judgment. ”This is supposed to be about peace! Y’know, the thing where you put down the gunblades and the tanks?” She scrunched her face up in disapproval and chased it with another pull of beer.

Rem’s eyes soon ended up fixed on Nyale.

”You can just…fly, whenever you want to?”

Down below the knot of girls, Nona oversaw an army of stage hands from a raised stage. She had a walkie in one hand and a length of cut pipe in her hand which she used as a maestra’s wand.

”Taiko need to be in Eight with the pagoda. Firework sequence B-2 is still backward. Someone get that stuffed anacondaur out of the rigging!”

Stage hands, performers, and stray personnel roped in to lending a hand jumped at her command!

The woman was the same as she’d alway been: tireless, uncompromising, and-

’Hey, mom…’

Nona Nipal turned to face the tall young man who’d climbed up onto her stage. The wrinkles in her forehead, the stern stare of command, all faded into a mother’s smile.

”My boy…!” she breathed. She swept across the stage to wrap him up in the same embrace he’d known since he was a toddler! Mom’s hugs were tight enough to ache and warm as a bear’s belly in winter! She loosened it just enough to look up at him- he’d been taller than her for years now.

”Welcome home, Kalen.”

Kiss me good-bye, love's memory
Follow your heart and find your destiny
Won't shed a tear, for love's mortality
For you put the dream in my reality

It was weird being on a stage after months of being in the wilderness, almost a complete 180 in terms of environment. People were rushing around to fix items that his mom was directing, all little things to make the next day flow perfectly after the flawless methodology that had occurred today. Kalen hadn’t been on a stage since graduation; and even then, he had been nervous to be up there as his family watched him. Old childhood traumas certainly never died did they?

However, none of that really mattered now did it? His momma came and wrapped him in the tightest bear hug possible, to the point he even made an ”Eep.” at the motherly hug he was caught in, hugging her back with a small smile on his face, the right corner of his mouth curving upwards at the known and cherished feeling. He had been taller than her for many years, towering more than what most people would have considered him to grow, though he certainly had nothing on his little brother, Eisei. But enough about him, forever actually, as she loosened up a bit to catch his ever smiling face.

”Its nice to be back.” he smiled, just happy to see her again. He had no idea where his pa was, but he was certain the bigger man was out and about with the younger siblings, Mae probably carting him around shopping, ”And…I think I’m home for good now, occasional vacation aside. I found what I needed to.” He brushed back his cut hair and scratched the back of his head. Most knew that he had been out and about on his own and sometimes with his friend, Samuel Momoson on occasion, writing his almanacs, for lack of better term, that were sold in schools, business classes, and bookstores all across the world, even Galbadia. Occasionally he’d do a signing here or there in either UNITA or Winhill, but Kalen had always preferred to limit being in the public eye.

It was all a means to an end though. It was a vessel to carry his pilgrimage, spirit quest, rather, that he had told his family about before he had even graduated Winhill academy. He didn’t want to just be a tool for pay as a SeeD, much like his distant brother, and he had no aspirations for any political positions like his sister Rem. Kalen had always been more philosophical in approach, in his own way, and a few things had made him really question who he was and his place in this world they lived in. His origin of birth regardless, it was always an austere thought that came to many youth that he had been, unfortunately, blessed with.

For three years, he had wandered, seen the world, drawn, written, and taken pictures of his experiences in the world. Now, he needed to step back into the real world that he had ignored. ”Quite a show, I know I missed the last one but you seemed to really outdo it this year, mom.” A laugh followed, ”Rem and Nyale were amazing. Lord knows, Rem is probably off doing who knows what now to take the edge off.”. His sister was a tight a** and he knew she would be running off and dragging whoever was around her as collateral damage.

”Even the Galbadians had their…interesting presentation.”. It was better to be nice than say nothing at all, they both knew it had caused a ripple of uncomfort amongst many in the crowd. He could only imagine the Trabian response.

His clear blue eyes looked down though, and he couldn’t even be bothered to think about it again. It had been four months since he’d been back in civilization, four months since he’d had contact with anyone in his family intentionally, deep in the work and spiritual process he had taken upon himself. Seeing the woman who raised him really was the signal that he was home, and ready to move forward with a new lease on life that he had found. Seeing her scars, they had never bothered him, rather it was the calling card he could always pick out of a crowd to find his mother, because she was one of a kind. ”I really missed you all.”

He was done feeling that way.

┏━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━═✥═━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┓

The night continued on, the crowd alive and filled with joy, the people brimming with energy even as the evening fell over the city, but none of it improved the mood of Koyuki. The group had been keeping an eye on her while Selphie had gone off to be with her man for the evening, wanting to have a date with him. It was mainly Babel who was periodically checking on Koyuki seeing if she needed anything and getting a simple shake of the head; or if she was asked how she was feeling, all she gave was a simple "I'm fine.", but the group knew better. At some point, Koyuki got up from her seat, entering into the apartment and into her room without a word, slamming the door shut behind her.

Looking over at one another, the group began to discuss with one another over the situation. "Something is up with our beloved headmaster. I think we need to do something about this. We can't have a repeated incident like last week. She nearly died." She said sternly to the group, all of whom agreed that Koyuki needed to be away from battle for the time being. "She won't talk about it though. Every time we ask, she just brushes us off and says the same thing over and over again. We're not gonna get through to her by just asking her." Tsitsho added, a little uncertain as to how they could get through to such a stubborn person. Varitas did have a suggestion. "I don't think we can do anything about it. We might be better off asking someone that she is closer with." But then, who would that be? Hayahiko had an answer. "Lloyd maybe, or maybe the headmaster of Winhill. Someone who was close with her during the war might be the only chance we have at the moment to get her out of this headspace." With that all said, Babel sighed and stood up from her spot, getting up. "Well, then that means its up to me. I'll have to go schedule a meeting with the president here. I won't be long."

With that decided, Babel made her way towards Koyuki's bedroom, knocking on the door. "I am coming in. Don't chuck your blade at me." Babel slightly teased as she forcefully ripped open the door despite the fact it was locked. She had no time for games with the headmaster, and even if Koyuki was in a bad mood, she was her secretary, and would ensure that her headmaster acted accordingly. Only.... the headmaster was nowhere to be seen. Her bedroom window was wide open, the curtains flapping in the wind. Babel's eyes widened as she quickly threw her head out the window to see if the headmaster was anywhere in the vicinity. "You've got to be ******** kidding me right now. Now you pull a rebellious phase?! Are you twelve?!" She growled and went back inside quickly, making her way to the group. "She dove out of the window. I have no idea where she's going to run off too. Get your asses out there and find her before she does something that we're all going to regret." She shouted at all of them, causing them to damnright bolt off the balcony and search the streets for Koyuki. Babel meanwhile, made her way to the garden. She had to warn the president.

Koyuki had been walking the streets of Unita, practically blending into the crowd without even thinking about it. She wandered on autopilot, her expression never changing, her eyes looking ahead at nothing. She was completely lost in her head. She wandered, and wandered, until she found herself at the edge of the city, overlooking the ocean on top of a building that was currently under construction. She held a bottle of liquor in hand and began to drink. Her eyes glaring at the sea as if it had wronged her. Her hand tightly clenched the bottle, shattering it in her grasp and causing her hand to be cut and bleed, yet even with the shards of glass embedding themselves in her hand as she clenched her fist, she only seemed to clench harder, blood pooling down her hand as she looked utterly filled to the brim with a rage that had not been seen in her. But, no one was around, no one saw, she was alone. Dropping to her knees, she slumped her head against a metal pillar. A simple cure spell was muttered under her breath, healing the wound. But she could not bear her emotions any longer. She placed both hands over eyes and began to silently weep in them, tears streaming down her face.

Nyale was a pleasant surprise to the group in Yukiko's opinion. She didn't know her brother Kalen talked about her so much to others, and it touched her a little bit. A smile grew on her face at Nyale's curiosity over her alcohol of choice, giggling and giving her a playful answer. "Timber's Bourbon Whiskey, sixty proof. Smooth as butter drinking it. Taste's absolutely delicious with a nice kick." She said as she sat up from her seat, pouring Nyale a shot from her glass and handing it over to her. "It kicks hard! Just a warning!" She teased, exctied to see how a sorceress can handle her alcohol. At the mentioning of the Galbadian performance, Yukikio's gaze shifted from them and away from the conversation. Being a Trabian made it a touchy subject, even for Yukiko who also did not like what was being shown. It was a worrying display, more so in regards to her mother. She had been reckless far too much lately, and her hospitalization came to a shock to many at Trabia Garden. Everyone worked round the clock to ensure her health was good enough to leave, and after everything going on, she wasn't so sure her mom was of sound mind. "Things are getting heated. Something's going to happen." She thought to herself. She could feel it in her gut, even with the alcohol buzzing through her now, making her relaxed a bit more than she normally be. At the mentioning of being able to fly, however, that snapped Yukiko's attention.

"Excuse me? You can fly? I am so very jealous right now!" She said in both shock and awe by such a revelation. She never met anyone who could fly outright. That sheer fact made her bewildered by such a thing and extremely envious by such an ability. "Man, I wish I was a cool sorceress and had like flying powers too!"
