Pick Vs. Finger

I can't play DragonForce if I use my fingers.

I have respect for anyone who can play Dragonforce.

Dragonforce can't even play Dragonforce music.
That's why I don't respect them.

I have respect for anyone that can go from playing prog rock(ie Yes, Rush) and fall right into skany funk (ie Victors Wooten & Bailey)

It's even more impressive if you can go from playing with a pick (ala Chris Squire) and fall right into slap without dropping the pick. If you can do that, I will kiss you.

I prefer my fingers, I'm much faster that way and if I want a pick sound I just dial up the correct tone and play near the bridge.

I use my fingers. When I see a person using a pick, I see a failed guitar player. I can make pick like sounds with my fingernails so I don't see a reason in using one. Fingers lets me do so many different techniques and sounds that I can't justify using a pick.

I agree with you there.
It's a matter of personal choice, really.

Now, the first songs I learnt (and most of the songs I know) are by Jack Off Jill. Now, they just don't sound right with fingers.
That sort of put me off the sound when you play using fingers, so I'm more drawn towards playing with a pick.
I can play without, I just prefer with.

I'm talking about somebody who's only ever played with a pick and never bothered using their fingers.
But meh, an added note is that I just like the fingers' sound better. A pick sounds too, I dunno, "clangy."

Well one day searching for the Deth Klok episode murdertrain a comin' I found a documentary on some bass player who was working with the band for recording or some thing, and he demonstrated a magical way to play "pick" by using two fingers to tremlo the strings, with sligly grown out finger nails, I made to try it in a few days and it worked exceedingly well, thus eliminating any chance of a pick every being played by me, other then if my hand just cannot handle any more string punishment, though after I finally up grade to flat wounds that will no longer be an issue either.

Is this the back and forth with the index and middle fingers? Where you pluck and then flick? It's a great technique to play fast with. I match up with my Drummer's double bass using that occasionally.

It takes a lot of ptactice to get fast at it. And your bass sound dissapears into the drum sound. But the rythm sounds massive.

I never got the hang of picks, it's much easier just to use fingers for me. Much quicker. Even if sometimes if I'd had a whole day of playing behind me, it is kind of painful. But that's okay, because it just toughens the skin more. xD
The other annoying thing about fingers though is that if you forget to keep your nails short you can be left with a horrible sound that you can't do anything about until you get home to nail clippers.
