"Not very tired." he said, still unwilling to lie to the other man. He wanted to roll onto his side and bring up his knees but knew that would be absolutely horrible and impossible right now with his wounds still healing.
<< PUT YER ******** BLOOD BACK IM USING IT >> Butch snarled. Lawrence grew more nonplussed than before.
"This is all very inconvenient." he said and rubbed his forehead exasperatedly, careful not to catch his IV.

"Well," Rodney said, putting the book in his lap, "I can talk to you about my day."

That seemed safe. There was nothing erotic in Rodney's day ever.
"Please." he said. "That would be nice."

"I've been exercising, still. Melvin didn't come this morning, but he does most mornings. Sorrow likes running the most. At least I can run from a fight," Rodney gave a small, sad huff of a laugh. "But, maybe one time at least, I can help. I think the practicing we did. With...Sorrow's chain. I think that I might be able to do that. Restrain people, without hurting them. But I haven't tried it again. So I'm not sure..."
Rodney wrung his hands.
"Mikael and I are going to try selling some carvings. In the cafeteria. I was going to ask Melvin about it, to see if he wanted me to sell some of his runes, too. It's something I'd like to learn, too, but not..."
He paled a bit.
"I don't know if I'd be able to go down there to get them."

Lawrence listened to Rodney's words and tried to think of the most boring things he could think of. Running was a good start. Restraining wasn't and immediately he was back to chains and Butch was barking in frustration at him as if he was a jogger by a gate.
"Carvings?" he said a little louder than he meant to over the barking only he could hear. "That's nice. And down...there?" it took a moment to realise what Rodney meant, he looked mortified.
"Water." he said, and Butch remarked <>
"I don't particularly like water."

"It's not the water. I think there are other...creatures under the island. That have been living here a long time. I think to get them, they have to kill...or, dissipate, at least. I'd like to see them, but not..."
Rodney fidgeted.
"I think...when I signed up, I'd hoped for more of a tour guide kind of safari, rather than a hunting trip."

"You'd have liked Wonder Park. In the beginning anyway. I wonder if you'd think that if you'd been there. Our hunting trips are on equal or lesser terms than the things we fight, they have a chance. They kept the tame monsters and they put the wild ones in captivity out of sight, they took a lot of their voices. They got free in the end of course. Think Jurassic Park but with infinitely more carnage on both sides. I don't know if you want a safari with what it costs."
He shrugged. "The water is worse than the monsters." he said definitively, glad to have found something which functioned like a literal bucket of cold water on him.
"I have almost drowned so many times on this forsaken island." he said irritably. "And salt water is the worst."

"That's when you joined, isn't it?" Rodney asked. He felt something stir in him that felt not okay. "I don't know if I would have liked it. They...took their voices?"
He hadn't meant...Halloween wasn't literally animals, of course, not that animals also didn't matter.
Rodney smiled very wryly.
"That's a lot of baptizing. We used to go out to the creek, in the summers. It is nice living on the beach. Or...it would be if the beaches were safer. "

"Yes." Lawrence said. "And I think so, they were for people to look at not empathise with."
"Baptising." Lawr said with a weak smirk. "Remind me never to indulge in anything born again with you." he shook his head. "I don't much care for water. Sunshine I like, perhaps a pool to swim in. Safe, contained water certainly, wild water can keep itself."
He closed his eyes again, exhaling tiredly. "Sometimes I question if I died in that water you know, swimming towards that distant boat I thought I wouldn't reach. Much of the evidence here has been to the contrary. I had everything mostly together right up until that point."

"Like this is...a test? In...purgatory?" Rodney asked, seeming alarmed at the thought.
For him, too, there had been a point where everything had changed.

Lawrence shrugged his shoulders. He felt like purgatory would be a little tame for the likes of him. If he'd gotten in it would have been on nothing but a sheer technicality.
"Maybe you are an angel, some scheming angel sent to draw me back to the light."
He looked Rodney over briefly. "Or sent to torture me. Things have certainly been different since you started giving advice."

Rodney smiled a little.
"It's nice of you to say. Angels are guardians. They're strong, and brave. I just like angels, I'm not one."
He looked a little more pitiful at the torture accusation.
"I don't mean to torture you."

"Saying you aren't something doesn't make that the case unfortunately."He shook his head. "There's a lot of things I could say I am not. Like a liar."
He looked a little more exasperated as the smile went away, his tone sharp. "I know you don't. I am just in a very distractable mood at the moment and you are the very definition of what I cannot have. Like you say, I was doing well resisting and looking for a wife but why did I even end up like this again? Why did I take a set of claws for a man?"
He made a tch noise. "You could have just left me with what I thought." He clenched his hand. "America said she's going to walk around naked when I'm not there." he said out of nowhere. "I can't go to her house, I can't do anything. You can't imagine what that feels like. It's not an emotion its a constant, persistent void "
He pointed at the book Rodney had just been reading. "It feels like that."

"Wanting?" Rodney asked softly, looking at the book.
"In Luke, it says if you'll seek answers, you'll find them. And God...gives good things, to those who ask. What have you asked for?"

"That's my dad's name." Lawr said, still a little groggy, more prone to voicing aloud his internal asides. "Luke. And I've been seeking the answer to my questions for a very, very long time." He shook his head, it was all nonsense, there truly was no divinity but him.
"I have not asked anyone for anything. What I need I take, steal or earn. I don't need to grovel. And I will succeed in the end."
