I think it was during the end of the Genei Ryodan story arc. When Kurapika's struggling with what's more important: friends or revenge. He remembers something from a long time ago. In the manga they have a panel with a little kid in the same style of clothing that Kurapika often wears. I'm not sure what happens in the anime. It's been a while. ^^;

I think the child waved then turned his/her back and ran, and the scene faded. Kurapika said something along the lines of "I'm not going to lose any more friends." I THINK. Maybe the child represents all the people Kurapika cared about who were lost in the massacre?

Maybe it's just my over-anilitycal mind talking, but I think that if it were only one person very dear to Kurapika then we would get more than a vague passing glance. Then again, Kurapika isn't very open with his past... Or maybe Togashi planned to elaborate, but never got to it... And look at me, arguing with myself. neutral

Supposedly, they were all killed off because their scarlet eyes are so beautiful. None of them were killed until after their eyes turned red because when a Kurta clan member dies while his/her eyes are scarlet, they stay that way.
If people just wanted them dead, I don't think the Genei Ryodan would have taken the extra effort it had to have taken to get them to expose their scarlet pupils. They would have just done away with them effortlessly, much like they did to those people attending the auction.
