i figure since that we have a Killua discussion thread I might as well make one for kurapika-chan. From the very first moment that kurapika appeared in the manga/anime i knew that he was someone who had an interesting story behind him. although they do not specify his exact age when he lost his tribe it's probably safe to say he was around 12... the same age as Gon and killua at the beginning of the series. my admiration for kurapika runs so deep because it takes a lot to stand up again after you see all the ones you care for slottered before your very eyes. Though he isn't physically the strongest character of the series i believe that it was his wit and intelligence that carried him through the hunter Exam. not only that but his will and determination as well. However after the exam has ended and once you have seen through the other mini saga surrounding the other characters you kind of get a better feel of what kind of person Kurapika realy his. his intelligence and calm exterior hide a great deal of the anxiety he's feeling in his heart. it must be so tough being the only survivor of the kuruta tribe. if I were kurapika I would often find myself constantly questioning why it was that I survived over the others, and to live a life spent seeking out the revenge i desire for the sake of my clan... that really doesn't seem like a life worth having. i mean... think about it... what would happen if Kurapika were to really reach his goal of defeating the genei Ryodan... what purpose would he have after that. I often find myself thinking about this... A lot of people say he would just move on and start a new life, but i really don't think so... since for such a long time he's been intent on one thing. kurapika in my opinion is perhaps one of the most... if not most complex and unique characters in the series. i apologize if my thoughts/views offend anyone in the guild... but it does also seem to me that togashi sensei did a good job at creating characters who are not perfect. We have seen Kurapika on a number of occasions lose his cool and allow his emotions to get the better of him. Please if anyone is intersted post your thoughts and feelings on Kurapika here as well.

I agree with you in many things you have said. Kurapika isn't a perfect character. Maybe that is why he is so attractive? I am a kurapika fan. (Heck, my AIM screen name is Kurapikafangirl! I was surprized that it wasn't taken.)

Anyway, back on topic. I love how Kurapika thinks, acts and responds to just about everything. I love how he adores his friends, but wants to keep his business his own. He cares for his friends, so he doesn't wish to burdent them with his load. I also find that his pain for his tribe is very fierce and shouldn't be tampered with. This in itself is a quality that is a weakness and strength. He is so much like any other person, it's what makes him special. I know that sounds strange, but it's true. Most animes, you find a character with nothing like a real life person, but Kurapika is a different case. Sure, I doubt any of us are part of some "Clan" or anything, but it's his reaction to life that makes me adore him. Not to mention his looks. (Hehe, had to add that.)

Now, I have only read up to chapter 83. So I don't know all about Kurapika there is. But what I do know now is what I am expounding upon. And I must say, I would probably still like Kurapika no matter what. (Unless he decides to become a homocidal maniac. o.o)

*maniacal laughter*

...

No, don't worry. I was joking. He doesn't do that, I swear. x33

As for my thoughts on Kurapika, I do find him to be a very interesting character. I particularly, just like you two, enjoy the fact that he's not perfect. He gets angry, he can be depressed, he can smile, he's able to laugh. He's very well balanced which allows him to relate to many different types of people and to understand them, even if he doesn't approve of their actions. Unlike both Killua and Gon, who each lean to different sides of the emotional spectrum.

However, I had some trouble coping with his imperfections during the Genei Ryodan story arc. I just couldn't help but feel sorry for Gon. Kurapika seemed to sort of toss him aside for a very long time before finally being forced to come to his senses. I understand the reasons he did what he did, but he still made promises that he never really kept. And Gon had a hard time with the fact that Kurapika wasn't the same Kurapika that he had befriended. Or rather, the Kurapika he had befriended was being overshadowed by his hatred.

When it comes to what he would do if he defeated the Ryodan, didn't he want to recover all of the scattered scarlet pupils of his clan? After that, I'm not exactly sure what he would do. He certainly wouldn't be able to immediately move on. I'm sure he would eventually; he's certainly got the willpower to do so. But I think it would take quite a bit of questioning himself and his identity first.

That point about Kurapika's treatment of Gon during the York Shin fiasco is a good one. Allow me to quote: "That's mean, Kurapika. When you put it like that, it seems that my life is being played around like a doll's."

But I think that Kurapika's hatred and irrationality during this arc makes him more believable as a character, more human. No one could go through watching their family and friends die and come through it unscathed. Kurapika's a strong person, so he was able to put his life (somewhat) back together after the massacre, but it was bound to leave some mental problems. I don't think he couldve ever faced the Ryodan without snapping. He saw them brutally murder everybody he cared for, and seeing them again would send all those bottled up and surpressed emotions skyrocketing. It's what would happen to anyone, no matter how much they try to stop it.

I think that's one of the reason's I like him so much. Another is that he shares the same values I do. That whole bit in the first manga about a Hunter's job being to protect the enviroment is what hooked me (I'm a hard-core tree-hugger). He also cares feircely about his friends. Excluding his stupidity durign York Shin, of course. But when they were on the warship during the Hunter exam, his reaction to Leorio's not surfacing was really scared and upset. he had only known him for a few days, but he still cared. That's something I would have done.

i agree with everything that you have all said... i believe the reason that kurapika treated his friends so harsh and tried to keep them at arms' length is because he didn't want to get others involved in his business. After all... once the Genei Ryodan found out that Gon, killua, leorio, and even Senritsu are kurapika's friends... they would use that to manipulate his feelings. i don't think kurapika could ever forgive himsel if something were to happen to all of those people he has come to care so deeply for just because of him. he would blame himself and probably never recover... it would be the second time people who were close to him were taken away from him. it must have been so dificult to learn how to become close to someone again. i know that if something were to happen to my friends and family... i would probably take the same action Kurapika did. i wouldn't forgive anyone if they took them away from me... i consider my friends to be apart of my family... so that really just break me up inside. I can't say that i would have the strength to carry on like kurapika did. Uh... and to reference Kurapika's appearance... yes.... he is very nice looking... but i honestly am very confused on something... people say his eyes blue... but i swear to you that they look green as Kurama's eyes... with maybe a tint of blue in them... i am not crazy am I?... please correct me if i am wrong... and by the way... tyu-san... I too have a kurapika based screen name on aim... it is HiIroNoMe translation... eyes of a flaming hue... or something very close to it. Sorry... if this seems rushed... i am leaving very soon and my mother is waiting for me.

Wow...Kurapika-san seems to make everyone admire him, neh? I am the same way Hiru-san! His eyes are green! Not blue. I also got really confused when he had to put on the black eye contacts and I didn't realize it. I was like, "OMG! Kurapika-san's eyes are black! o.o What's going on!?" He then said he was wearing contacts to protect himself. It really scared me when he got angry at that muscle dude who is part of the Ryodan. (Can't remember his name at the moment...sorry) I can't even imagine how he will react to Kuroro! He was the one how ordered them to attack the Kuruta clan...and Hisoka said he probably didn't even remember that. Why not add feul to the fire, no?

i'm glad i am not the only one who considers his eyes green... i kind of got flamed once by some chick because I pointed that out... it really ticked me off... but i kept my cool. oh... i take it you haven't seen up to where kurapika encounters Kuroro... it's really cool what happens... kurapika-chan crossdresses... and he where's a wig to hide his identity. i really do pity Kurapika though... I would hate to have a boss like Neon... i swear... i want to beat her up until she learns how to be compassionate... When two of her body guards died... i think their names were Veze... and something else... i can't recall... she didn't even care... she was only concerned with her mummy. the only reason why Kurapika wants to even work for her is because she is the only lead to his tribe missing eyes... I will admit i feel bad for her because of how her father uses her... but she is old enough to realize she is an adult who shouldn't throw temper tantrums. Ah, gomen gomen... i didn't mean to get off tipic. Back to kurapika-chan... Have you ever come across a fan girl so obsessed with him that she created a character who was the last surviving female of the Kuruta clan? my god i hope I don't offend anyone by asking that...
PostPosted: Fri Jul 14, 2006 11:18 am

Oho god...I must be a crazed fangirl then! xD I thought about making a fanfiction like that. But I realized that she would be to mary-sueish, so I didn't make one like that. I truly think I am obsessed with Kurapika-san, it wasn't until I got a real life boyfriend, which I broke up with, not 3 days ago, that I realized I was that obsessed with him. It was...kinda scary.

...He has to crossdress! xD OMG! That is too funny! I can't wait to read that! I bet he's really pretty, isn't he? (Since he has such a pretty face after all)

Neon did seem kinda heartless to me, but she still seems to have a child's heart. Like she never got the chance to grow up, since she doesn't have such a strong family. (Or a mother for that fact)

I've thought about something along those lines, but it was more like "the last surviving member of another, much smaller family also murdered by the Genei Ryodan." I gave up on it when I discovered I could not think up a plot for it. x3

Neon was very annoying. Not only is she inhumane, she's a moron. When she meets up with Kuroro and tells him all about her abilities... Even if she didn't know who he was, he was a complete stranger. You don't go around telling complete strangers stuff like that! D<

As for Kurapika, I think a new employer is in order pretty soon. Neon can't use her nen, and her father has gone completely insane. Her body part collecting is obviously going to be put to a stop when they run out of money. I say Kurapika should ditch them. Hmph!

Neon sits there and TELLS Kuroro about her abilities! o.o THAT DOOFUSHEAD! Grr! I mean, I know he's a pimp and all, but that doesn't mean you have to go and tell him! Was she being threatend, or was this just "I'm going to tell a random strange my abilities because I feel like" kind of thing. domokun

no, it doesn't make either of you rabid fan girls... if you had actually gone through with that... then... it might have been a different story... unless you came up with a really good reason as to why you were doing that... Ah... yes... i am not the only one who dislikes Neon here then... Um... she told him of her own free will... he was actually being a gentleman when addressing neon... she's just an idiot who doesn't know how to use her brain. However... i really do pity her since her family structure is so weak, but still... she isn't a child and should be smart enough to make her own decisions... and not blab. uh... kurapika... i hope he does get a new employer, but someone told me that Neon gets her nen ability back... I don't know if that's true though.
PostPosted: Sat Jul 15, 2006 12:20 am

well, in neon's defence (someone has to do it) kuroro did say that he worked for her father. so she assumed that he already vaguely knew about her ability since that was the main source of the families income. but, yeah, you don't go around telling everyone all the details about your abilities. this proves that she is still very immature. but i also believe that kurapika is to blame for not getting back her nen ability. since kuroro has his nen sealed, he can't release neon's ability. but it's a catch-22.

Wait...oh I don't remember him saying that. I had no idea he told her that he worked for her father. Crappy translations are to blame for that. Ah... I can't recall...but did Kurapika know it was Kuroro who stole her nen ability?
*shrugs* I'm guessing he did. Besides... in Greed Island *spoiler* Hisoka goes off to find this guy who can reverse the effects of Kurapika's chains. Therefore,it's possible for Neon to get her ability back. However I don't know how many people know this so I put it in white.

Well, when he had Kuroro, Kurapika was going through a major mental crisis. He could have easily killed him just like he really, really, really wanted to, but if he did kill him then the Genei Ryodan would have killed Gon and Killua. In the end he chose friends over revenge; it was a nice turnaround, actually. Kurapika had finally gotten control of his anger. He's much more likable when he's not boiling with rage. x3

I'm not sure if Kurapika even knows Kuroro's nen ability. I don't think Kuroro ever told him, and they never fought each other on fair terms. I don't think Kurapika ever even saw Kuroro's nen, did he?

no, I don't think so... unless i am really going through short term memory loss... kurapika is a lot more likeable when he isn't angry... though his eyes are pretty when they have become scarlet. I'm sure though... Kurapika got his revenge and his friends all at once... Killing someone in my opinion is a way of letting them off of their punishment... i believe if you keep someone alive and constantly remind them of what they have done... then it's a far suitable revenge... unless they can't recall it... then it would be pointless to allow them to live... At that moment though... gon and killua were more important to him than his plan to justify the slaughter of his clan.
