A Reluctant Killer

Bana looked up at Irene then glanced in the direction of where Niko walked off to. Then took out pendant and looked at it. 'I dont get it. usually when I take something that isnt mine they try to get it back' Bana thought then stuck it back in her pocket. "Ya, Jancob should be fine" Bana said 'anyone I met there before should have forgotten me by now anyway. People never have that great of memeories anyway' Bana thought as walked

Bana looked up at Irene with suspicious eyes. "So miss Irene. Where will you be going when we get to town?" Bana asked while keeping her eyes on Irene having a feeling of anoyence since wasnt able to keep Niko.

Niko only looked back once, to make sure he wasn't being followed. With a small smile, he walked away, towards a distant forest. Hidden among the leaves, far away from them, he stopped and leaned against a tree, closing his eyes. He felt the usual emptiness inside, but he was used to this by now. His whole life was empty.

All of a sudden, he heard the sound of footsteps, coming closer. He whirled around as a group of bandits came into view, forming a loose circle around him. " Uh-oh..."

The cantering of a horse was heard, as a young woman rode into view, racing down the path towards Bana and Irene. She wore a mages cloak, long grey hair flowing behind her. A necklace was visible against her white cloak, with a pendant of two stars intertwined.

She rode past them, but then came to a halt when the pendant released a white pulse. "...?" She looked around, confused.

Bana smiled at Irene when she said she wasnt leaving then when saw the horse ran and hide behind Irene and watched the woman curiously. "Why did she stop?" Bana whispered while watching the woman and holding on to one of Irene's legs and hiding behind it

Obviously annoyed now, the woman glared down at her pendant. "Of all the dratted times for you to malfunction on me... Work!" She gripped the end of one star, and it released a white pulse. Niko's pendant, in Bana's hands, started to glow softly.

Seeing the light from the corner of her eyes, the woman turned around sharply. "What the..." She saw them, and wheeled her mount around, trotting back to them.

She appeared to be baffled. "You're not... Where did you get that?" She pointed to the pendant in Bana's hands. Now that she was back in Irenes range, her emotions came across clearly. Worried, and frightened.

"Its mine! I stole it fairly!" Bana said defensivly as gripped the pendant and hid behind Irene. 'why's it glowing?' Bana thought as looked at the pendant

She stiffened slightly when she heard what Irene said. "I thought as much." She looked around quickly. "He isn't here now. Where is he?" Hr horse shifted from hoof to hoof, as if sensing his riders unease. Without bothering to wait for an answer, the woman cupped her hands in front of her. A strange semi-transparent globe of energy flickered to life in her palms. The inside was cloudy, but slowly started to clear.

Before it was done, there was a loud bang from the distant forest. Smoke started to rise. The woman cursed, the globe disappearing. "Damn it all, that kid is accident-prone!" She wheeled her mount around, spurring it into a gallop down towards the forest.

Niko held his sleeve up to his lips, coughing. "That... Wasn't neccessary," He gasped, the smoke half-blinding him. Who knew bandits could get a hold of gunpowder, escepially when it was so new? He didn't have time to ponder this, as two bandits drew out their cutlasses and attacked. He dodged around them both, trying to see past the smoke. The forest had caught on fire; that needed tending to, before the wildlife was killed off.

Taking a breath, he drew signs in the air in front of him. "Eir novair lief!" He gasped, and he vanished, reappearing a good while away. As the bandits looked around for him, he closed his eyes and held out both hands, his palms glowing white. A pale energy net rose out of him, to surround the flames that had started to eat up the forest. Not noticing as the bandits discovered his new location, he whispered complex incantations under his breath, and the flames died down.

Opening his eyes, he felt a rush of wind beside him. He leapt out of the way, but not quickly enough. The tip of a blade sliced through his tunic sleeve, drawing a thin line of blood down his arm.

He staggered slightly, eyes wide as the smell of blood reached him. The wound itself wasn't deep, nor fatal, but he was very sensitive about blood... It released a monster inside him he fought everyday to keep locked up...

The bandits paused in surprise as he sank to his knees, gasping for breath. Apparently deciding to take the opportunity to finish him, the two with cutlasses stepped forward, raising their weapons.

Then a strange aura filled the air around him, spreading across the surrounding area. To those who could see magic, nikos aura had been a pure white. Now it was tainted, turning a dull grey, then shifting into black. Fear raced through the area; a special technique known by only a few. The bandits halted in their tracks, a few retreating a couple steps.

The woman could feel it as Nikos control over Shadow began to slip. Her horse screamed and reared, refusing to go any closer to the source of the strange magic. The young woman dismounted; she was very close to the others. Running over, she yelled, "Hey, you! Get away from him!"

The bandits didn't need any more coaxing. They scattered.

She knelt beside Niko, ignoring the magic aura around him, one hand on his shoulder. "Niko... This might hurt a bit." She could feel him trembling. She had to stop Shadow, before there was another... Massacre.

White light streamed from her fingertips; healing magic. But this achieved the opposite affect for Niko. He winced, biting his lower lip to keep from screaming at the pain. When he opened his eyes slightly, the woman could see as his dull grey eyes shifted into a pure red color, then back to grey.

He finally lost the battle to stay concious, and collapsed. She sighed, retrieving her magic and laying him down on the ground. Tearing off a bit of material from her sleeve, she wiped away the blood and bound the wound. "Not again..."

The woman looked up at Irene, her eyes narrowed slightly. " Girl, you shouldn't ask for the truth unless you are absolutely sure you want an answer. I'm not even sure who you are, or how you know my little brother." She gently brushed Niko's bangs out of his eyes, watching him closely.
