Joseph Brown I think it may be more Chen's the bad cop not because he's bad at his job but because he is the "bad cop" with nobody to play "good cop". He's styled after Asian gun-fu type cops more than police drama cops, and if you look at those you can see that in those movies both the cops and criminals that hold tight to their personal sense of honour evenmoreso than the rules of the police/gang are often the heroes. Personaly, while I think a more western cop that is chained by the limits of the law would be an interesting character... That's not Chen at all. He's someone that breaks the rules sometimes because he believes that sometimes its more important to get the badguy even if you sink into a bit of a morally grey area. That said Vin, keeping to those movies I still think it should catch up to Chen someday. Perhaps not in the "excess litigation joke" but in more the tragic way they often unfold. Keep stuff in mind that would make interesting plothooks, and maybe have them come back to bite him in the a**. I mean, the example most people remember, with James would have been much more interesting if Chen realized he had to let James go, but spent more time trying to "catch" Mr. Black and expose him in a way that "Justice would be done"... Not nessasarly by kicking him in the head.
That's why I said he should have a hardass boss or something.
Though, as far as good cop/bad cop goes, whenever Tenkai pairs with him he ends up playing the good cop role. Tenkai is in no ways a cop, but he has enough moral scruples to do exactly what a "good cop" partner would do.
And I like what you said about eastern and western differences in cop drama and gun-fu movies. That really is the difference there. If you try to look at Chen in the scope of people like Jerry Orbach and Ice T, or that balding guy on SVU, you aren't going to find Chen in that mix. Vin models Chen FROM watching kung fu movies, so that's really the scope you got to use.
So, honestly, if people are the kind to hate Chen as he is now, but they also hate Kung-fu movies, well...you can't really blame Vin for that. You could say you could blame Hong Kong, but in the end it's really just personal preference.

@Ed: I don't think anyone was implying Noah would fight Chen. ._. Where are you getting that from?
@Fenix: Believe me, I can understand that point. I remember back when Sieg wanted to go around capturing vampires and monsters and holding them in prison and creating "order", and I realized how bad of an idea that was. You can't just easily do that in a world where every single species is given their own definition and scale of morality. These days I can't simply have Tenkai go around killing vampires like a slayer should, because now not all vampires are evil! So yeah, I can see where things screw up there.
However, perhaps I worded it wrong to say "applied the whole unjust and illegal" thing. What I mean is that it needs to be taken by a case-by-case basis. It's heavily contextual. Yes, in an open world like this, there are some things you can't just do "by the books", because it isn't Chen's job to ACTUALLY put everyone he comes across in jail for being a supervillain. If that was the case for things like MMOs, they'd take players dancing naked in public and put them in a dungeon instead of just ignoring them. And yet at the same time, if they wanted to make some silly story, they'd have a dancing naked NPC get tossed into jail so you could lol at crazy people.
Chen's police work COULD work as a means of proper storyline and interaction as long as it's viewed as just that, and not as a simple "duty". Otherwise he'd react to just about anything and everything people decide to slap onto the RP canvas, and he'd be the only one doing it. It'd be as dumb as Tenkai trying to be in 100 places at once, fighting every single vampire on Gaia.
But real world laws arent interested in making a good story. They're interested in keeping the peace. The way that Vin wants to handle it with Chen getting booted from the force and becoming a vigilante makes for a good story, as does the situation JB brought up. But just as JB said, if it was done as a litigation joke just to lol at the character, it's not only lame, but incredibly boring unless people have some sort of hatred for Chen/Vintrict.
And yes, I see a LOT of RP affected these days by how people feel OOC. It's shameful.
Buuut...
@JB: You are probably right. I should put that behind me and stop thinking about it. I guess I've just been a little emotional lately. Bad things happening too often that are just screwing with my mind, so I do tend to worry quite a bit about things.
