Why is it back to lock your joints when you lift or carry things?

Because you might hyper-extend something

Depends on what you're carrying and how.

Locking the joint can restrict bloodflow, and if you lock a joint and then the weight shifts, it will dislocate. Standing with your knees locked for too long can actually make you pass out.

Which is why you don't lock out on something like leg-press, or, say.. carrying something over your head for a long period of time. That, and if you locked out while carrying something extremely heavy, you can damage the joint.

EDIT:: Also what he said. Hyper-extension in some cases.

I'm confused then, because I thought when you pressed you had to straighten your leg.

It doesn't get straighter than locking it. So what am I supposed to do?

Seems like Tenchi Muyo has held up pretty well over the years. Though I didn't realize how crazy skinny the females on the show were.

Go up until the point of locking out.

Basically, push up, but don't lock the knees. You still get a full range of motion, minus like.. a couple of inches.

If you're not doing heavy weight, it's okay to lock out, just don't make a habit of it because the heavier you go, the worse trouble it can get you in. I lock out out of habit, but I'm trying to get out of that because I don't want to lock my knees with the weight above me then ******** something up.

In some instances, you can lock out. Deadlifts, squats. Wouldn't lock out on shoulder presses because it's asking for a hyperextended elbow.

What about when you go backwards?

Laying down and curling the weight behind you, can't remember what that is called. But someone told me that I'm supposed to keep my hips on the bench, but when I curl my legs up, they come off the bench.

So what am I doing wrong?

Dramon: Straight line from shoulder to point of impact needs a slight bend in the elbow... but those full body haymakers are all locked out fully twisted and extended hits from what I can see.

Am I seeing it wrong?

Jello-shots...you looking to scrap baby?

No, I was just pointing out the difference between 'unguard' and 'engarde'.

One would be to not guard something, the other would be an (IIRC) French phrase that means 'on guard' or more contextually 'be on your guard (because I'm attacking you)'.

Now, to read...

I know what the ******** I said....that's why I said it...

@FB- you should never...never lock anything when you are hitting someone else. The recoil from impact could seriously injure you.

@Tenkai- i dunno what you called yourselves because I forgot but it was you, Vansin and Kichiro...you I had no problems with but you three ruined a fight because of some grudge.

You don't lock out when you punch. You punch THROUGH the target metaphorically speaking, meaning you would theoretically lock out somewhere past the point of impact.

Flightless: I would lock then because you don't do leg curls with heavy weight, and you want the full range of motion. The hamstring has been called the bicep of the leg, it serves the same function. So you want max ROM then, especially since you should never be doing a ton of weight anyways.

I'll take your word on it Dra-man.

Only hurtin' I ever got from punching the bag was when I first did it without wraps, and ripped my knuckles to shreds. Still have all the blood marks on it.
