It's actually understandable, I think.
They established how co-dependent Zack's personality was in the first seasons, when he "attached" to Booth. You know, when he kept trying to bond with him, ask for his advice, etc.?
But, like all the characters said afterward, none of them were reciprocating his connections - they didn't do enough to enable him. Booth ignored him, Hodgins treated him like a kind of playful puppy and didn't take him too seriously, and so on and so on, but I imagine that Gormagon probably did enforce his opinions and (at least pretend to) take him seriously, which is what a dependent personality needs.
So, even though it's sad that he won't be on the show anymore, he's the one I most understand falling into that sort of blind following.
