the badger saw the weasel drop his comrade and began orienting himself to find the source of the smell.

"Time."

A single dart left the end of the blowgun after a quick and very precise exhale from the badgers well tuned lungs. The dart sailed effortlessly through through the still air and hummed seamlessly towards it's intended target. After a slow motioned- path, the dart found home in a dead limb near the weasel.

A faint "Thunk" jolted Randu , he bolted upright and looked beside him at the source of the sound. Next to him appeared to be some weapon, intended to harm him. It must have originated from whoever is giving off the musky odors. Randu's mental question had just been answered. The one who is hidden and reaks of Mustidae, is not friendly. Randu turned tail and ran back to Basil. He shook the giant hare in a frenzy. " Please, please wake up! Someone is trying to kill me, or us! I cannot fight! Please!"

A lone red fox pup lay bunched in a ball. She was unaware of the badger, hare and polecat nearby. Her terrified state made her loose all sense. The memory of the day before replayed itself over and over in her mind, keeping her ever present in a nightmare.......

At six weeks old, she is the lone survivor of the litter. Prey remained scarce and what was caught, provided little sustanence. Her Mother decided to take her out hunting that morning. Her new lesson was to learn how to pounce on prey. Her Mother's voice was always calm and soothing. " They key is to pad softly toward your prey and always stay downwind. When you are close enough that your snout nearly touches your meal, spring up in the air and land directly on top of it. Be sure to land with your mouth and forepaws on the prey. This will work well for you even in the snow. Snow will give you an advantage. Now, Little One, show me your best pounce." SHe backed up a bit, with her hind end bunched up, trying to focus her energy in her back legs. When a horrible ruckus shattered the silence of the forest. It was braying dogs, Twolegged dogs! They were headed swiftly toward them! She peered up at her Mom, and saw for the first time, panic and uneasiness in her Mom's eyes. Her Mom turned to her " Lay flat and close to the ground. Do not move or utter a sound. No matter what My Little One, do not move." Even though her Mom's vioce remained calm. she sounded urgent. As she had always done, she obeyed her Mom. She layed flat against the Earth and did her best to even stop the movement of her breathing and the sound of her heart beats. Through the blades of grass she saw her Mom run in the direction of the dogs! What was she doing! She nearly slipped and followed, but her Mom had said , " No matter what.." She lost sight of her Mom, her field of view was obscured. She could not shut off what her ears picked up. The dog's brays and barks grew into a frenzy and then one of the two legged's firestsicks cracked. Time slowed down.. what transpired next seemed to last forever. She heard the dogs excited barking and fighting amongst themselves. The twoleggeds guttural voices. Unknown noises. Finally she heard the dogs and two leggeds slip away much quieter than how they had entered. She knew it was safe now. She couldn't bare to lie still any longer, she had to follow in the direction her Mom went. It wasn't long before she came upon a scene that will haunt her forever. She gasped in horror. Laid out in front of her were fox bones and discarded flesh. Not a trace of fur. The skull lay upsidedown, cracked and broken. Blood coated the grass and dirt underneath. She tried convincing herself that the gore before her was not her Mom. But her Mom's scent was attached to every bone, every grisly detail. She wailed at the sky and turned in circles. Her sanity went dim, her grief and pain had taken over. She ran blindly into the forest. How long she went on, is unknown. Sheer exhaustion made her collapse.

Now , she lay curled up with her tail covering her face. She could not stop the shivering or the whimpers that escaped her.
