Jiki sat by the lake in front of the main school building. No one else had arrived yet, but that may have been because she was a little early. She glanced down at her watch which read clearly that it was a quarter past four.

She couldn't get to sleep anymore. Nightmares haunted her sleep, but Jiki managed to get naps in here and there.
As Jiki looked down at her reflection in the dark water, she saw the deep purple circles that had begun to form from lack of slumber. Inside her eyes, she saw the reflection of her reflection, like a never ending hall of mirrors. Jiki waved her hand over the surface of the water, and all the images in her head went rippling away.

It didn't take long for Luke Yasya to realize that he had woken up earlier than he should have. "Oh well." He thought to himself, shrugging the thought off as he pushed his fiery red bangs from his line of vision. "At least I'll have some peace and quiet, for once." Luke was a tall boy for a 16 year old, about six foot three. He was also moderately thin, which made him attractive to many girls in the school. It made him sick even thinking about it, he just couldn't stand listening to the girls talk. "Eeee!" Nails on a chalk board. However, he liked to keep to himself and normally did all he could to avoid everyone in the large spacious school. He liked to sit under the old oak tree that stood in front of the school and read. Most of the students knew that they shouldn't bother him while he was there, but the girls never felt like Luke actually needed any boundaries. Pens, pencils, shirts, tissues, anything except for his bag and books. The only thing he ever said to stop them was, "I don't give a crap. Feel free. Stay away from the books." No one ever took one of his books, which were like asking for a death sentence.

Luke liked to hear the waves of the water near by, it was a tranquil sound, and it made him happy. Luke was different from everyone else, the only one of his kind left on Earth. His Fallen Angel mother fell in love with a human-being and through conceiving, they had him. Most of the fallen angels were gone now, including his mother. His father, finding her dead, killed himself and left Luke to come to live on his own and come to this school. It was difficult at first for him; he never knew them since he was seven at the time, but Luke could take care of himself. Ever since then, he had been alone. That is how he preferred it, he would hate it if anyone ever tried to get inside his head. No one knew his background, his story, his problems, and if anyone ever had to come into contact with him, then they called him by his last name. "Hey Yasya! I need help with this." Luke would do his best to say as little as possible to explain the problem then hurriedly move away.

He strode toward the oak tree outside of the school and slid down the dark brown bark to sit on the cold soil. A smile stretched across his face as he pulled out a book that he had wanted to read for a long time. Recently it had hit the shelves of his bookstore. Excitedly he opened the page to read the synopsis, which was on the first page rather than the back for secret reasons. The book was about honing a certain type of person's powers, but that wasn't what interested him; in fact he didn't give a crap about it. Every book writer that knew "they" existed had tried to explain his powers in words. And every time, they failed. After he had opened up the book, he was no longer at the school while the morning sun took its place above them and caused the pool next to the tree reflecting the golden glow, he had gone into his own little world.

Time passed like a dripping faucet. Each second and drop felt like a century, and if Jiki didn't do something she would surely go insane. Staring into the reflection of the water, Jiki hadn't noticed that another student had come.
Who would come so early in the morning?
Jiki had to squint slightly because of the distance between them. It was Luke Yasya.

It was best if Jiki stayed where she was. For one, he was obviously busy reading some sort of book that appeared he seemed to take a strange interest to. However, there was no way she could read the title from the distance. For second, he was on a different part of the class chain. Luke Yasya was one of those guys that people always flooded around. All the girls were always gossiping about if he liked someone or if someone had a crush on him. Jiki sometimes found it comical that he seemed to unknowingly shoot them down if they tried hitting on him with some borrowing flirt. Jiki heard a lot of things.

On the contrary, Jiki was usually left alone by all the other students, and she wouldn't find it surprising in the least bit if some of her classmates didn't even know her name. As far as classes, she was quite a good student when it came to regular academics, but the magic lessons are where everything usually went wrong. Jiki could never do as well as other students when it came to control. She would always lose either focus or her temper, and her power went with it.

Jiki turned back to the lake as she thought of this, and she already began to see the uneven waves tearing at the skin of the water and the wind blowing violently against her face.

Luke stopped his reading to look around him. The wind had picked up a little disturbing his reading, not that he wasn't already finished with it after the first two chapters. The book wasn't as interesting as he had thought it would be before, once again they were so close but they were so wrong. So many details were off, but could he really blame them? Fallen Angels hadn't been seen for a near century, they only had tales and myths to run off of. He sighed and closed the book gently and placed it in his messenger bag. It wasn't the first time that he had been disappointed by the writings of an author; his work would be the only accurate findings that anyone could ever read. Yes, Yasya was planning on writing a book since no one on God's green Earth could get it right. Now he was tired of sitting down on the hard ground and he felt the indents that the tree's bark has caused on his back through the shirt. Quickly he stood; momentarily dusting himself off making sure that there wasn't any mud or soil sticking to his pants.

As he looked up for a second his eyes caught someone sitting on the water's edge staring down at the movement of the water. For some odd reason he felt a sudden curiousness take over him as his feet had started walking over without a thought. It took a few paces for him to get a clear view of her and noticing right away who she was. The way that she looked at the clear blue water was saddening. Rude he may be, but he wasn't heartless. Something about her figure and her stance had caused him to think that she was depressed. The problem wasn't him; she'd never asked him out before, that at least he knew. In fact, Luke had found her interesting since his first day at the High School. She had the kind of life that he'd love to have for himself. Alone, peaceful, quiet. He knew a lot about her when he had taken up the job of fixing up the filing cabinets for the teachers. Her name was Jiki, she was an angel, and he had some idea of what was going on in her home. But he never talked to her, approached her, or tried to show her that he even existed.

"Mrs. Jiki?" Yasya asked, bending his knees to kneel down by the water's edge next to her. His eyes were caught by his reflection on the water as well. As he stared his frown became prominent, he hated everything about his appearance, and it had caused him so much trouble here at the school. Stupid jealous boyfriends would often come up to him to pick a fight. Of course Yasya won, his powers were so developed and easily controlled that it was hard for him to go easy on them. His eyes seemed to look right through the mirror reflection of himself and began to watch a fish swim around playfully in loops and in speed. Finally he ignored the water and turned his gaze back to Jiki. "Are you alright? You seem to have a lot on your mind, would you like to tell me about it?" Luke smiled his charming and award winning crooked smile at her.

With his last question, Jiki could feel the letter that she had stuck into her skirt side burning through her skin as she was quickly drawn to awareness. As she regained her ability to think, she tried her best to displace the feelings of hatred and rejection from the paper that yanked at the chains that suffocated her heart.
The wind suddenly came to an abrupt stop as Jiki turned, stunned, to see who the brave person was that had come over to her.

Unfortunately, Jiki wasn't as good an actress as most teenagers were and had noticeable trouble before regrouping herself to speak.
"I-I'm fi-fine."Her words were stuttered as she quickly turned away. Her words were clearer but still light as she began to talk once more. "I just have too much time to think."She half-laughed, thinking that she was venting to the school heart-throb."I could be a lot better."

Jiki put on the best smile she could as she faced him once more. Maybe Luke would turn out to be deeper and more interesting than she had thought originally, or maybe he was just going off a sympathetic whim. For some reason, she truly hoped it would be the first one though. Something was different when he had spoken to her than she had remembered him speaking to other people. However, it was probably all in her imagination.
