xxxxxxxxEverything was dark. So much pain had subsided by now that pain seemed no longer present in the fragile body of the girl.
xxxxxxxxMolly Riddle slowly opened her eyes to find that she was no longer in the presence of her boyfriend, Bryce Poole, and she was no longer sitting within a screaming metal death trap, crushed by the shrieking sound of bending metal and the sound of sparks flying against asphalt.
xxxxxxxxDarkness. Pure darkness.
xxxxxxxxIs this hell? she thought. But no. There was no eternal flame burning against her flesh. It was rather cool in this darkness.
xxxxxxxxA sound. A noise from the darkness overhead could be heard. Gears? of some sort.
xxxxxxxxMolly looked frantically around her trying locate the exact location of the sound. Her vision was foiled when a blinding light shone upon her. A spotlight.
xxxxxxxxShielding her eyes, she looked upward towards the source of the light. Three towers each with awkward shapes descended towards her.
xxxxxxxx“You who call yourself Molly Riddle,” said a deep female voice. “Are called to our presence by our master.”
xxxxxxxx“We don’t mean to frighten you,“ said another voice. A child, so it seemed. “But we are here to give you a second chance.”
xxxxxxxx“Molly Riddle you are the first to be cast within this show,” said yet another voice. This voice was a softer female voice. “We are the three daughters of the Ringmaster. I being Viola, the middle sister, and the head daughter.”
xxxxxxxxMolly could finally see them. They were all three standing on their own individual towers.
xxxxxxxxThe girl who was talking gestured to her left. “She being Harper, the eldest sister, and the second daughter.” Viola lowered her arm and then gestured to her right. “She being Consuelo, the youngest sister, and the third daughter.”
xxxxxxxxMolly could see why the eldest sisters were named what they were. Viola had some sort of violin-cello like instrument and Harper had a giant harp. Though, she couldn’t figure Consuelo out. Why was she named that? Her instrument was a small harp-like circle on a long cane structure and in her hand she held a wand of some sort. Molly shook her head and looked back at the first daughter.
xxxxxxxx“As we said before, you are the first of the cast. Because of this you will be named the highest of them under us and our father….” She paused for a moment and continued, “I name you the Puppeteer! And to the others of the cast Puppet Master!”
xxxxxxxxViola threw her arm outward and a puff of black smoke surrounded Molly. Covering her face, she waited for the smoke to be gone. When the blackness surrounding her dispersed she glanced around. The first thing she noticed was locks of hair around where she sat. Her hands automatically went to her head. Her long hair was now to her chin with a flip at the ends. She stood up looking down at herself and saw her new wardrobe. A frilled collar around her neck and long-tailed, short sleeved, button up shirt covered her torso, and puffy shorts from the top of her hips to her mid-thigh. On her feet were what looked like striped elf shoes, without the bells, that reached a little past her knees.
xxxxxxxxWhen she looked back up a mirror was placed in front of her face. A black smile was painted onto her upper lip and all color was drawn from her eyes.
xxxxxxxxIt was scary for her to see herself this way. She didn’t want this. All she wanted to do was to go and find Bryce and let him know that she was alright.
xxxxxxxxThough it seemed as if it were just to crush her entirety, Viola continued to talk, “You are never to have contact with any of those you knew before. You are never to mention to anyone who is to come to this show who you really are. Your real name is forbidden to be spoken from your lips. Someone may find out who you are, but they, too, will not be allowed to tell anyone else within the show. Your puppets may know who you are and you may know them but no one else. During nighttime you will be here. During the day you may go by your real name, but, again, you mustn't meet with anyone from your former life. This is your new life and your old self is no longer.”
xxxxxxxxMolly stared up at the daughter with wide and sad eyes. She couldn’t find her voice. She would have to live without Bryce. This was hell after all. But what did she ever do to deserve this hell?
xxxxxxxxFinally she found her voice and asked, “But…who are my puppets?”
xxxxxxxx“The next two to join us here. It won’t be long though. So you shouldn’t worry,” said the youngest daughter.
xxxxxxxx“Who is this ringmaster that you keep telling me about?” Molly asked shyly.
xxxxxxxx“You will never know,” said the eldest. “He is our father and no one else’s. He looks to us to watch over the lost souls in this purgatory. We run this show under his command.”
xxxxxxxx“And what is this show?” Molly asked afraid of the answer.
xxxxxxxxThe two lower sisters looked at the higher sister. Then all three of them looked down upon Molly and said in unison, “The Freak Show Circus.”
