7/6/2014 Character: Lance Prompt 001: New Beginnings
The sound was deafening to those close enough to hear it, like if the rolling boom of thunder was no longer distant but contained inside your ear. The roaring of wind and of fire, the clashing and raging in the heavens, it all resonated for miles. From deep inside the dark clouds, a blazing fireball hurtled towards the earth below, arcing and leaving behind a dazzling trail of cinders and ash. Its shape twisted as it tumbled down, until with a thunderous crash, it collided into the ground. Smoke from the crash spiraled up into the sky, and within the deep crater, life stirred. Slowly, painstakingly, a man crawled from the pit, radiant white feathers falling from his bare back like tears, igniting and burning before they fluttered to the ground. He gasped for air and collapsed onto the ground at the edge of the pit, unable to muster the strength to go any further. Finally, the pure, fluffy white down that connected with his back burned, leaving two long, v-shaped scars in its wake.
He could feel the heat from the smoldering crater burning his feet, but he could hardly open his eyes. All he thought about was his brother, still in heaven, watching with horror as he was thrown down. Those last few moments replayed in his head over and over again, and it felt like the weight of the realization of what happened to him was crushing him. For a moment, he thought he would die: his freshly beating heart would stop, and he would cease to exist, or go wherever angels went when they died, but a few minutes passed and he was still breathing. Then, the world around him began to dawn on his mind. The soft, warm soil underneath his cheek, the swelling boom of thunder, the feeling of wind on his face. He finally opened his eyes. His body protested, fatigued and bleeding, but he dragged himself to his feet and stood, shakily looking out on the strange place he now had to call home. A flash of lightning lit up the purple highlights of towering clouds. The wind whispered in the creaking trees and he could hear the groaning of wood, the alarmed calls of birds, and the fluttering of their wings as they fled for shelter from the storm.
I'm here now, he thought. No point in complaining. With one shaky foot in front of the other, he walked into the world.

7/6/2014 Character: Laera Prompt 004: Childhood Memories
I remember my 7th birthday. My mom was pregnant with my last late sibling, and I woke to the smell of her cooking in the kitchen. It smelled deeply of garlic and spices, and I leaped out of bed and darted around the corner to see if she was making what I thought she was making. My mother was a tall, thin woman, heavy with the weight of a child in her tummy, and at the time, I had always firmly stuck to the belief that she was the most beautiful woman in the world, and the proper conclusion was that I would grow up to look exactly like her because she was my mother, and I was her daughter. It wasn't until things got bad for her that I let go of that. She was already busy as a bee over the stove, making breakfast simply because it was my birthday, and I watched like a bird from the shadow for a few minutes, out of curiosity. She seemed completely oblivious to me until I bounded in and wrapped my arms around her waist.
"Well, look who's awake?" she said, kissing my forehead. "Happy birthday, Laera, darling." I beamed at her and stood on my tippy toes to peer over the counter. With a sense of bliss I took in the delicious sight of warm, spongy bread, all sorts of chutney and sauces, even a few fried eggs to go with it all. Those are the kinds of memories I retained from my childhood: eating good food, alone with my mom, little snippets of moments I felt like I had everything in the world. I should count myself lucky. Don't we all wish we could just remember the good times?
