"I would imagine she has," Brian said. "She knew my name without me telling her, so it stands to reason she's been keeping tabs on me for some time now. Jonah did say that his descendants would be keeping tabs on my side of the family, to ensure the mistakes of the past wouldn't be repeated."
He wasn't surprised to hear that they didn't know what had wiped out the Monks. Theories were all that was there, it seemed, but could Brian's newfound ability be put to use to find out what had happened? "Is it possible there might be more Time Flowers?" he asked. Aura echoes? He'd never heard of them, but the more Riley spoke, the more intrigued he became. So the ability to see them wasn't exactly common, but why was he able to? That was when Riley mentioned something he'd never heard before. "Aurametry?" he asked. "That's not something I've heard of before. What exactly is that?"

"It's possible, the hard part is always finding Time Flowers. They 'grow', if you want to call it growing, along the roots of the Tree of Life, or rather that's what legend says. I can confirm that where they grow there is an abundance of life energy, or aura. They can also grow where a large concentration of aura once was, like here, with all the Monks of Was manipulating aura. So yes, this is the long way of saying you can find more." Riley answered Brian and then gave an additional explanation on Time Flowers.
"Aurametry is just the fancy way of describing the ability to pick up on aura echoes. Way back when some people tried to scientifically describe the abilities of Aura Guardians, so it's just a holdover from those times." He continued. "So, with all that said, are you still interested in pursuing the ways of aura? Despite knowing it will certainly lead you into conflict with your distance family? And that's not to say how difficult the training will be. Think you are up to the task?"

Hmm, so it was possible to find more Time Flowers, just difficult to actually find them. Perhaps that was something he could look into at a later date. For now, however, he had other things to worry about. Riley's explanation of Aurametry cleared things up a bit, as it seemed it was more a fancy word than anything else. Hearing Riley's question about whether he still wanted to continue the training gave him pause for a moment. Did he really want to keep going, knowing that he was setting himself up for more encounters with Maeve and her side of the family?
It took only a moment to reach a decision, and when he looked at Riley again, there was determination in his eyes. "I don't care that the training will lead to conflict with that side of my family," he said. "Let them come. Aura is a gift that, from what ye've told me, very few people have the ability to use. If I were to decide not to pursue the training, it would be like saying I don't think I could handle it. I want to prove that I'm nothing like the cretin that was my ancestor. If ye're willing to train me, I'm ready to learn."

Riley smiled as he listened to Brian and his determined answer, the man giving a little nod. "That's what I was hoping you'd say. Alright then, how's about we make this official then?" With that he reached into one of his pockets and pulled out what looked like a tiny version of the Time Flowers, however this one seemed dark, devoid of that vivid color and energy that other Time Flowers had. Riley would take the dim and small Time Flower and extend it out for Brian to take. "A gift, a symbol of our bond as teacher and student. It's a special type of Time Flower, the specifics I'll save for a later date. What's important now is as of today you are a Student of Aura." He said with a smile.
"Why don't you head into my apartment in the back and get cleaned up? You had a rough time. Go in, relax. Once I finish up my work around here I'll make us some food. You can then crash here if you'd like and tomorrow we'll begin your real training." He said, pointing at his office door. "Inside my office, the only other door. It's not a fancy apartment but it makes do."

Brian gave a nod when Riley mentioned making it official, watching as the older man took out a Time Flower that was darker than the ones he'd seen. When it was extended to him, Brian took it carefully, curious as to what it was for. He didn't have to ask, however, as Riley explained as he did so. Hearing that he was a Student of Aura made his heart race a bit, excitement flooding through him. He was truly taking on his family's legacy, a legacy that hadn't been there since ancient times.
Riley's next words had him looking in the direction of the office. Resting sounded really good right now, and Brian wasn't going to argue with his new teacher. Standing gingerly so that he didn't accidentally drop the Time Flower, he gave a nod and turned to walk into the apartment, only to remember something and pause. Taking a Pokeball from his belt, he held it up and returned Firebrand, with a promise to make something special for the Fire-type later. Lu refused to go back into her ball, and Brian didn't argue as he walked into the apartment, eager to clean up and rest so that he could start his training. Tomorrow the real work would start.

The rest of the day and night was uneventful as far as tutelage went. Brian was allowed to clean up and then make himself comfortable in his room, the Channeler-to-be finding all the amenities he needed and even provided a change of clothes that belonged to Riley, finding them mostly fitting. Something to wear while his own clothes were washed. Once Riley was done with work he would retire to the apartment himself, get cleaned up as well, and begin to cook a meal for Brian, insisting he didn't help. Once he was finished he treated Brian to a pleasant meal of local fare called Canalave Noodles, a kind of stir-fried noodles drenched in a starchy sauce with plenty of local produce like Rawst Berries with a side of seaweed.
Once they were done the pair would retire to the living room, Riley's Lucario offering to clean the dishes. Now settled down and relaxing for the evening Riley struck up conversation. "So, tell me more about you, Brian. I don't mean your family or Channeling or anything like that, just you personally. Your likes, your quirks, stuff like that. If I'm your master for the time being I want to get to know you."

Brian found that relaxing came easy for once, not having to worry about wondering what would happen if he let his guard down. He freshened up, changing into the provided clothes and allowing his own to be taken and washed. They fit well, despite being slightly too large. While he was waiting, he let Grace out of her ball to bond with her, since he'd not gotten much of a chance to do so since purifying her. She seemed to be less shy around him than she was around other people, but Brian figured that was likely a byproduct of when she'd had the Shadow virus. When Riley came in and started making food, Brian got up to offer help, but sat back down when Riley insisted he just relax.
The meal was quite good, and Brian had to wonder where Riley had learned to cook, though he didn't ask. After the meal, when Riley's Lucario offered to clean the dishes, Lu joined him, wanting to give Brian and Riley time to talk. Grace sat in Brian's lap, enjoying him running a soft brush through her bowl-cut hair. Riley's question made him pause momentarily. "I'm not really anything special," he said, not looking up from his task. "I've always loved Pokemon. Cooking is a hobby of mine, one that I've found calms me when I'm upset. I found out early on that I have something of an affinity for Fighting-types, but I never really thought much about it until it was recommended I come here to learn from ye. Other than that, I like to learn. History, languages, just about anything that I can learn."

"Ah, so you're an inquisitive fellow, that's good. There is always something to learn in this life. I also always had an affinity for the Fighting type, particularly Lucario of course because of my lineage. However I can't say I actually specialize in Fighting types, which may be surprising." Riley said with a smile as he leaned back in his chair. "Well I suppose this would be the appropriate time to ask, before we get into the heart of your training tomorrow; do you have any questions for me? About any of this Channeling stuff or anything else that has come up today. I would be surprised if you didn't. And do not worry about prying too fair, as your new teacher I am more than willing to answer any questions you may have for me so ask away."

Brian wasn't surprised to hear that there was always something to learn in the life of a Channeler. It made sense, considering Channelers tapped into their Pokemon's abilities. He had to grin when Riley said he'd always had an affinity for Fighting-types, especially Lucario. "Lu was actually my starter," he said. "Although I consider all my Pokemon family, Lu is the one I have the closest bond with." When asked if he had any questions, he had to stop and think. There were a few that came to mind right off the bat, and he decided to start with those.
"Ever since I managed to escape the temple, I've been wondering," he said. "How is it that I was able to see parts of my ancestor's story through the Time Flowers? Does that mean my family somehow traveled here at some point, or was it just coincidence that I happened to stumble across them? For that matter, how are Time Flowers created? Can anyone use them, or can they only be used by someone that has aura?" There were other questions he had, but those were the most important ones; not to mention that some of the questions he had could only be answered by his parents or someone from his family.

"The Time Flower are created by the aura of the Earth itself, manifestations of life energy that flows from the Tree of Life. No one is exactly sure on how they are made, as in what conditions that must be met but some theorize that they bloom where strong concentrations of aura are or where traumatic events, such as death, occur. But yes, they can only be utilized by a wielder of aura. As for how you can see your ancestor's story, I am currently unsure. The Time Flowers are still a mystery by large to even the Aura Masters. I can assume there is something that happened to your family that is directly linked to you, something important, such so that it's through their own aura they are trying to reach out to you, even in death. I've heard of such cases, like a lingering will, so to speak." Riley explained to the best of his abilities. "All I can say is if you train hard and master the ways of aura you may be able to unlock more answers."
With that Riley leaned back a bit and relaxed a bit more. The two would converse more for awhile before it got so late that Riley suggested they retire for the night, that their first true day of training began tomorrow and that Brian should rest up. Before bed he gave Brian instructions to meet him at the cave entrance to the mines by no later than eight. With that Riley wished him a good night and went to his room.
-----
The next day...
Riley apparently would get up earlier than Brian no matter how early the other man got up, Brian finding a stack of pancakes with Rawst Berries and Sitrus Berry juice left out for him and a note to enjoy them. Once Brian enjoyed the breakfast, if he had time, he would have to head off to the mine entrance as instructed, the sun in the sky bright without a cloud in the sky. He would find Riley waiting for him, his Lucario and Absol standing by his side as he waited. "Good morning! Sleep well?" He greeted Brian.

Brian listened as Riley answered his questions, and he couldn't say that he was surprised when he heard that only one who could utilize aura could activate a Time Flower. Somehow, he'd figured that might be the case. Even Riley didn't know how Brian could see his ancestor's story, however, so he would have to do more digging to try and find answers about it. If it was Bertrand Adams trying to reach out through the Time Flowers, then Brian would have to be careful not to fall into the same traps that his ancestor did.
Brian found himself conversing easily with Riley, something he'd not done consistently for quite some time. Even in Snagem, there were only a few people he regularly spoke with, so it was nice to get to speak to someone he wasn't as familiar with. When it was suggested they retired for the night, Brian was surprised by how late it had gotten. He'd been so focused on talking to Riley that he hadn't paid attention to the time. Grace had long since fallen asleep on his lap, her soft breathing relaxing to him. Lu chose to return to her ball, knowing that her partner was safe.
The next morning, Riley was gone when Brian woke. He cleaned up, spotting a stack of pancakes and berries with juice that he quickly wolfed down, though not so quickly he would make himself sick. Checking the time, he saw that it was close to eight, when he had to meet Riley, so switched out Grace for Lu, having a feeling that he would need her assistance at some point. He found Riley waiting for him, and wasn't surprised to see the man's Lucario, but he wasn't expecting to see an Absol, as well. "Good morning," he said, nodding a greeting. "I did. What will we be learning today?"

"Ah, eager to start, huh? Well today I figured we could start with the most basic of Aura abilities and that is simply detecting aura at will. Currently it seems like you are only capable of doing it at random, particularly in times of dire straits. If you are to get anywhere with your latent ability to manipulate aura you must first be able to see it. Now...I say we will be starting there but another thing occurred to me..." Riley began to explain, then looking Brian up and down before finishing his last sentence. "You have no artifact, do you?" He said as he opened up a nearby drawer and took out a set of old looking blue gloves with a single gemstone embedded in each.
"These are my artifacts, passed down to me by my father who received them from his father and so on. They can be traced all the way back to Sir Aaron." He said, putting them on. "Technically I do not need them to perform simple aura manipulations, not at this point in my training, however they help a lot for the basic stuff and are absolutely needed for the complex." He said, giving Brian a smile as he finished putting on the gloves, then holding out one of his hands, palm up. The trainer and his Lucario would steal a glance from one another before Riley looking down at his palm and focused. A small vortex of blue energy would begin to appear in his palm, the vortex spinning and building in size until it became a stable orb of pure Aura Energy, an Aura Sphere if you will.
"See? Without my gloves, my artifact, I would be incapable of doing such a thing." He said before crushing the orb in his hand, causing the energy to harmlessly dissipate into nothing. "So while I'd like to teach you how to detect aura we must first get you an artifact. Tell me, do you have an item on you that holds a special place in your heart? A family heirloom like my own maybe? Or even a lucky trinket?"
