Chapter 5: The Hardest Part Of Letting Go Is Holding On
Sugar sat at the table of the diner with tear filled eyes. Where had she gone wrong? She had tried and done everything she could think of to get Gambino's blessing. Yet somehow she was not good enough. Not for him or his son... She swallowed hard but the lump in her throat made her cough, causing her to lose control of her tears as they streamed down her face. She felt a two hands catch the tears on her cheeks and when she looked up she saw that both Gino and Zetan were smiling faintly at her and trying to console her with the 'stop the tears' method. But it was no use and the tears flowed freely and plentifully down into her lap. "I just don't understand where I went wrong..."
Gino reached out and tried his best to wipe her tears once again but each drop was replaced with at least two more. Zetan had pulled out a handkerchief and handed it to Gino, and he used it to mop up the tears. But soon the cloth was a sopping wet useless rag and the tears were still coming. "Sugar... It isn't you... Really. It's my father. He doesn't even like me and I'm his own flesh and blood. It should be a shock that he doesn't want me to be happy. But at most, be happy that Zetan has agreed to transfer our letters to each other. At least we can talk that way..." Gino forced a smile and tried to cheer her up.
"But it isn't the same! Can't we just sneak around? Granted that it isn't the best thing to do but..." Sugar sighed and wiped her own face off. "Only seeing you at the social parties just isn't good enough..."
"I know and I wish there was another way around it... But my father is a ruthless man. He'll stop at nothing to keep us apart. You have to understand that. Even if it means banishing you from the Isle De Gambino... Banishing you to Aekea... He might. Nobody has ever come back from Aekea. It has been sealed off to all Gaians. It is where my father sends those he does not like. The banished... They'll never open it... Not until my father falls... And that could never happen." Gino sighed. "It isn't a hard thing... Banishing people... He recently banished a woman named Josie there. And he felt no remorse... I know if he sent you there I would never see you again. I don't want that... I don't want to lose you completely. This is the best and only way." Gino looked stressed and he was tugging at his hair. Why didn't she understand? Maybe she did but she was not taking it well. But then... He knew it would not be easy. "But look on the bright side. October is coming up soon... That means Halloween. And I know we are having a Halloween bash. And you can come. It will be a public party..." Gino forced as smile and he saw Sugar feign one back at him but he knew she was terribly unhappy still. He looked over at a clock on the wall and it was already six thirty. "I should go before my father realizes I'm gone." Gino slapped down enough gold on the table to pay for their breakfasts and he stood, making Sugar stand with him. He held her in his embrace for an eternity that seemed like only seconds. Why... Why did it have to be this way? He looked down upon her teary face and he had to fight back tears of his own. He hated to see her like this. In the short time they had known each other he felt so close to her. She was a dear friend and he hated that he was the source of her pain. He kissed her softly on the forehead and flashed a painful smile at her. And then he turned and left the diner. He was gone...
Zetan kept a protective arm around Sugar and tried to comfort her. She was like a little sister to him. He didn't like the thought that Gambino might try to take her away from everybody. "Well to each his own I guess... But this is not the last time you will see Gino. I promise you that." He kept her close in the chilly winter-like air and did his best to think of something to cheer her. "How about we go visit Maggie?"
Sugar half smiled and leaned her tired head on Zetan's shoulder. "Zetan... Your idea of visiting Maggie is to hog tie her to the bed and eat Pocky right in front of her. That's not a visit. That's torture..."
Zetan shrugged and smiled to himself. "What can I say... Maggie brings out the mischievous little child in me. She makes me feel like I can let loose sometimes..." He chuckled inside and smiled. "Besides, it is fun to watch her get frustrated. And she starts half the fights as it is..."
"And then she finishes them..." Sugar laughed a bit to herself but the good feeling quickly turned into one of worry. "You think he'll be ok?"
Zetan smiled faintly as they reached the car. He opened the door for Sugar and let her in, closing it behind her. He walked around to the other side and let himself in, starting the car up and revving the engine. "I'm sure he will be Sug... Try not to think about it too much ok? The last thing we need is for you to be worried sick. It isn't good to worry or think too much. Ok?"
Sugar nodded and she sat back in the seat. She watched the Isle De Gambino sink into the distance as they exited on the ferry. The morning was still quiet but inside her head, somebody was screaming. It was her anger, her furry, her hatred... All bubbling up for one person and one person alone. She could never forgive him. She could never care for him. And she would never call him dad again...

I know it isn't much but it should be enough to hold you guys over for the weekend right?
I will seriously not have access to a computer for about 36 hours. Saturday starts the 24 Hour relay which I am team captain of. I also have Prom to go to... I will be a busy girl...

Chapter 6: Foreshadowing of a Shadow
Koukon stood at the door of the Guild Center handing out fliers to passersby. She wiped her brow and sighed. It was an unusually hot afternoon for a fall day. Still, it was nearing the time of Halloween. The streets would be bustling with Gaians...
"Sorry I'm late Koukon..." Sugar muttered as she took a place on the other side of the doors. "I know I was supposed to be here ten minutes ago."
Koukon feigned a smile and shrugged. "It's really ok. You've had a lot to deal with these past few weeks. And I got Seishin to stay a little over her shift so it isn't like there's been a big gap in time." Koukon smiled at an oncoming man and handed him a flier. Then she returned her attention to Sugar. "Hey, Halloween is coming up. It's really close... Six days. Are you going to Gambino's Halloween Bash? It's supposed to be a Birthday surprise for Gino as well. Funny, I thought his birthday was in May."
Sugar looked up as if coming out of a trance. Suddenly consciousness sprang into her mind. "It is... May thirteenth..." She looked down at the ground as if trying to figure an explanation to the curious situation, but finally slumped back down, unable to find anything logical. "I dunno... Maybe he's off his rocker, as if that was any shock..."
Koukon shrugged and handed a flier to a passing woman, with a smile. "Perhaps he feels bad for tearing you two apart... And wants to make amends? Maybe he thought using Gino as an attraction would bring you and he could apologize."
"Or..." Sugar started, and then handed two fliers to an entering couple, with a painfully forced smile. "Maybe he's off his rocker..."
Koukon nodded slightly. "That too..." She continued to pass out fliers along with Sugar until her shift was over. Melly arrived and Koukon quickly fled to go find Kai.
"I don't like the way she's become... She mopes about. She tears at the mention of the Gambinos... She even draws Gino constantly on her sketch pad, then cries... We've got to do something Kai..." Koukon said as she took a sip from her soda.
"Agreed... Arisa, I don't like to see her like this. She's... Not been herself. It's hard to even get her to laugh. Even when Zetan is highly Pocky intoxicated and he and Maggie fight... She just doesn't giggle at them the way she used to. It worries me... I remember when she would laugh at the drop of a hat after watching the effects of Pocky intake on Zetan. He would be wired... And any word would throw her into giggle fits... Just because she knew that somehow Zetan would turn it into an extravagant rant. She'd always say 'It's like watching a refined, elegant Duke after thirty glasses of whine,' and then she would giggle some more. Now, not even a twitch from her lip. Nothing..."
Koukon nodded slightly in reminiscence of the fun times. Times before Gambino ruined their friend's life. Still she couldn't help but wonder if it was a good idea to take action against the man. He was the most powerful man in Gaia. Anything he said was the Bible itself and people followed his word as if it was so. How could anybody stand up to a man like that? Still... For Sugar's sake, they had to get her to that Halloween bash. Even if she refused...
Sugar laid in bed, staring at the ceiling. It had been days, weeks... Since she had last spoken to Gino. Was he ok? She didn't know... She knew nothing... It killed her. She wanted so desperately to be certain he was safe and ok. She knew that even though it would stir some emotions, she must go to the Halloween bash.
Sugar stood in the Market Place shopping for her Halloween outfit for the big bash. Every so often, she flashed a glance in the direction of the Gambino family mansion. Nobody... Nothing... She sighed.
"Young lady... Come over here..." A dark mysterious man in the shadows of the market stood motioning for Sugar to come.
Cautiously, Sugar walked toward the man. He only had one thing for sell, and she never had seen such a thing before. "What are those?"
"They're special vials... A special fluid inside." The man stared out at Sugar from his shadowy haven. "They are only one hundred gold each. Fairly cheap considering it is the ticket to your life."
Sugar backed a few steps away and eyed the man suspiciously. "Who are you and what do your little vials do?"
"My name is not important... But if you must call me anything, call me 'X.' These vials are the key to a healthy life for Halloween night. Trust me, if you plan to go to that mansion, and I know you do... You'll want a good few of these with you. A safety precaution. When you start to feel ill, drink one and you will be instantly better. Wisest choice you will make in your life." The man waved a vial in Sugar's direction. "You can always come back for more."
Sugar slapped one hundred gold on the surface and grabbed the vial. "There... I bought one. You'd better hope that these are the real deal... If not... I'll get my boyfriend after you... Gino Gambino..."
The merchant let out a small chuckle and slumped further back into the dark. "Believe me... After Halloween night, I think Gino Gambino will be the least of mine, or anybody's worries..."
Sugar slinked away from the man, thinking him a lunatic. Still, she had no idea what caused the impulse to buy the bottle. And even still, she kept it at her side. Perhaps the man was not insane. She had no idea... But she wasn't going to risk it...
And then, Halloween Night came...

w00t! New chapter... FINALLY! @_@
Yes I know... And I'm terribly sorry! I went to the beach this weekend, from Friday to Sunday and I had zero access to a computer... (And even running water, Yuck!) We were camped out on the beach so no electricity either. Nothing... So I wrote this little bit for you people. I would have written more but Hero was with me and so we occupied our time with... Other things... -^.^- I'll post pictures and regail you all with the thrilling details later... (Ok, so a majority of the details... Not ALL...) And then hopefully I'll have more for you to read within the week... (What with the Tea I have to go to though, I don't know exactly...) But rest assured, more will come!
A little more interaction with characters OTHER than Sugar. YAY! That's always good. One gets tired of writing about one's self for so long... And of course, the introduction of Lab Tech X... My friend and yours... He'll have a slightly large role in the next coming chapters... Which believe me, you don't want to miss. (Even though you know what happened...)

And of course, the introduction of Lab Tech X... My friend and yours... He'll have a slightly large role in the next coming chapters... Which believe me, you don't want to miss. (Even though you know what happened...) I missed that year, actually, myself, so I don't know what happened as well as most do. Er, I didn't miss it... I just knew what was coming and avoided the mansion since I knew it spelled certain doom. Yeah, that's it. sweatdrop

Chapter 7: Brewing Trouble
Sugar looked upon the mansion and all the Gaians cluttering inside. She took a deep breath and advanced toward the open doors. It seemed so long since she had last seen Gino... But tonight she would see him. She adjusted the eye patch she was wearing and stepped inside the mansion. All about her, people were dressed in costume. Some witches... Some werewolves... Some vampires... She seemed to be the only pirate. She made her way into the main ballroom where everybody was excitedly anticipating a speech from the mighty Gambino. And sure enough, he was there... Hamming it up before the crowd, of course. But no Gino in sight... Sugar sighed and walked over toward the goodies. She began to reach for a cracker but she heard a strange noise coming from behind the door not too far off from the table. She retracted her hand and moved slowly toward the door. Suddenly, a fist came through the door and wood chunks flew every which-way. She jumped but calmed herself... It was Halloween after all. Nothing to be afraid of... A man in a terribly convincing zombie costume made his way into the room. She had to give it to Gambino... He knew how to provide entertainment. But soon, the zombie man was followed another, and yet another zombie. One by one, zombies flooded into the room. Sugar watched in horror as they rushed into the room, biting people and drawing blood. And then she felt a sharp pain on her shoulder. She looked back to see a zombie with its teeth embedded in her flesh. She tried to scream but she couldn't get her voice to work. She hit the zombie in the face and ran toward the entrance of the mansion.
Zetan whistled quietly to himself as he approached the mansion. He straightened his werewolf mask and smiled to himself. He really was too old for costume parties... However, he had promised Sugar he would be there. He opened the door and before him stood Sugar. "Sugar... Are you leaving already?" Zetan advanced to hug her, assuming she had been upset. Without a word, Sugar let her eyes flutter shut, and she fell into Zetan's arms. She was out cold. Zetan quickly shut the door and dragged Sugar over to his car which was parked by the marketplace. He saw she was bleeding. "Sugar! Sugar, wake up! What happened!? Did Gambino do this to you!?"
"Yes and no..." Came a voice from the shadows. "The girl will be fine if you give her this... She must drink it before she turns..." The same man Sugar had met with before stepped toward Zetan waving a bottle of green liquid. "It is crucial to her survival... It only costs one hundred gold. If you were to put a price on your friend's life, I imagine one hundred gold is not much compared to what you would pay... Am I right? Trust me, you want this vial..."
Zetan handed the man roughly over one hundred gold and snatched the vial from his hand. He removed the quark and poured the liquid into Sugar's mouth. Within minutes, he watched as her eyes batted open and she sat.
"My head hurts... But not as bad as my shoulder... What's going on?" Sugar stood and leaned upon Zetan. "Zetan... Oh my God! Zetan! It was terrible! There where zombies! They're killing people! Killing them! One bit me and..." Sugar put her hand on her shoulder and pulled away her hand covered in blood. "I'm ok... But... How did this happen? And Gino! Zetan... He needs help! Zetan, please believe me..."
Zetan stood back and looked at Sugar. He put a hand on her forehead to check her temperature. "You're a little warm but..." Zetan turned to find the man who had sold him the vial but he was gone. "Zombies..." He turned back to Sugar. "Ok, I believe you... But how can we save Gino? That man said that you were going to change if you didn't drink the vial. I assume he meant change into a zombie, correct? Well if the zombies where attacking people then almost everybody must be changing as well. And we are out of vials now..."
"No we aren't! Zetan, I bought a vial the other day... It is back at home... Come on, we have to hurry!" Sugar jumped into the passenger seat and urged Zetan into the car.
"Sugar, one vial isn't going to do us any good. Especially when all of Gaia will be populated with these Zombies soon enough." Zetan jumped in the car and sped toward her house nonetheless. "Of course... If we can find Kai, she might be able to break down the components of the vial... Find the ingredients, you know... We could make more I suppose. It may take weeks... But zombies can't die, right? So no rush... These people won't die."
Sugar nodded and fought back tears. Why was all of this happening? Was it some plot of Gambino's? Perhaps a freak accident. But whatever it was, it was going to be hard to combat.
Kai was locking the door to the guild house. She was ready to head over to Gambino's party and have some fun. She was just turning to leave when she saw Zetan and Sugar round the corner. "Oh hey guys! What's going on?" Kai saw that Sugar was bleeding rather profusely from her shoulder and Kai quickly unlocked the door letting them in.
"Well, I didn't ever think I'd see something as amazing as this." Kai said as she entered the lounge room where Zetan was bandaging up Sugar's shoulder. "You'll never believe what luck we have. The analysis of the liquid picked up on two main ingredients. The first is plain old colorless club soda. The second..." Kai adjusted her glasses and closed her eyes proudly. She could be such a genius sometimes... "Green Tea Pocky..." She smiled at the two. "Of which, we have plenty. And there is one small ingredient... Water from the Durem Reclamation Facility... Still easy to get, though undesirable to drink." Kai stepped forward. I've already started on a prototype for a gun that can shoot syringes filled with the stuff at the zombies... And..." She paused for dramatic effect. "Belts to hold the extra amo... I knew something like this would come in handy one day. We have plenty of guns, they just need a little tweaking. I've built hundreds of these guns and if we work through the night... We can have them ready and start liberating... I mean, healing these people in the morning!" Kai smiled excitedly and began to call every guild member on the list. Quite a few were not at home, but more had not quite left and said they would be at the guild as soon as they could be. Soon, there were hundreds of members there fixing as many guns as they could and making as much green antidote as they could. They were ready to fight for their lives.
The next evening, Zetan and the Pocky Girls led their guild into war. They stormed into the Isle de Gambino in their vigilante gear and prepared to take the mansion by force. A few people were terrified, but they were all informed that they did not have to help, and that they could flee at any time.
Sugar peered inside the door and looked about. The mansion was empty and desolate. She crept inside followed closely by all the others. "Keep your eyes peeled..." She whispered. "We'll be in groups of four and split up throughout the mansion. Find Gino and get him out of here if at all possible. But shoot anything that moves and isn't one of us... Got it?" Everybody nodded and they advanced in. Quietly and slowly they split into their groups and made their way through the mansion. Sugar took the upstairs. The mansion was so enormous that it could take days to clear it all out. Sugar heard a creaking coming from behind a door. Shakily, she reached out and turned the knob... A shot was fired...
