So, today I have received some particularly troubling news: my boss is suffering from high blood pressure.
The stress of running a battery store coupled with low sales, and a mall that's generally not doing well either, has gotten to him. He's essentially relegated to occassional shifts, maybe not even that. For now I can only assume that it will be just me and his daughter running the store.
If the boss won't be coming in any more (at least not nearly as often as he used to) then the only logical conclusions would be the store is going to be closed down or someone else will be taking it off his hands. In either case it does not bode all that well for me.
My concerns for my boss's health aside, I now (more than ever) have to seriously consider my future employment and must act very soon.
As I see it, I have two real options: quit and find another job, or stick it out until the very end.
I have to weigh these options with my going back to school. Should I just quit and not work for the remainder of the year, focusing instead on my schooling and my projects? While this 'hidden, third option', (or option 1B), may seem the most tempting to my sloth-at-heart-self, I do not know how this will affect my family (who has, for the first time gotten themselves going again; my brother finally has work and might keep his work pending his probationary one month period; my sister also has work).
Herb had told me to not dwell on personal feelings in regards to my boss and his family. He said this in reply to my comments of feeling like a jerk if I left them to fend for themselves. He said at the end of the day it's still all about business and my boss will likely chomp at the first bit to get rid of the store.
Anyway, any advice would help tremendously.

I am not understanding why your boss is coming in less and less. What is up with that. I cannot comment on that aspect until I understand why he is doing that. I will think about your situation.

Well, essentially, his doctor had told him to stay away from stressful work. His daughter said he was diagnosed with high blood pressure, and that he's been feeling really weak lately.
The way this all works out is that his daughter takes up the brunt of the work. My boss still comes in the first hour or so of his usual shifts, then hands it all off to his daughter soon as she comes in.
Now, since Michael's health is a problem right now we can't rely on him doing even half of the work he used to, and since I don't know what his daughter's schedule is like that leaves most of the extra hours going to me. And, honestly, I'd rather not stay here and work more hours.
It's not that I'm adverse to working 40h a week, it's more of that I'm adverse to working 25-40h a week *here*. There's nothing to do, no customers; it hurts my head.
The way it looks like it's going to be right now is that I'm probably going to leave fairly soon. Nothing is final, I have to take other factors into consideration, such as my dwindling funds, my needs, my wants, my time.
I eagerly await your assessment and advice, umar-sama ~bows respectfully~

What I'd do is keep this job while looking for another. There's nothing saying you can't do that. That way you don't have to worry about income. You still have a job. Once you find a new job you are sure you'll like, hand in your two week notice and finish it. It'll make for a good reference if you stay your entire two weeks.
I'm in the same boat myself. We had two workers finish their last day yesterday, so now it's a party of one and a half at the store I work at.
The half is a newbie that this will be their third day...
They're shipping someone down for one week, but the main boss himself is still in Sri Lanka for his wedding until the middle of september at the least.
Our sales have been down drastically the last few months from lack of traffic in the mall and the DM has been riding our cases for it. I think they might shut the store down if my manager doesn't return soon.
Come my next day off, I'm going job hunting. I probably won't get paid extra for doing the manager work and that's going to piss me off. I'll have to contact my District Manager Saturday and kick up a fuss.
The last couple months has been affecting my health too. I've been sliding back in a lot of categories and it's not a good sign.
Heavily depressed, anxiety attacks, panic attacks, lack of sleep, low motivation for most things, lack of motivation at work. There's other worse stuff going on for it too but I don't want to talk about that.
It's time for me to move on as well, but there's no much work for a computer technician in this city. I applied at the only two tech stores here and both refused me, one because I'm not family and the other because they don't want to pay the wage my certification deserves. They want a highschool kid they can pay minimum wage.
I figure once I find a new job, I can do tech work in the evenings through a third 'run at home' company to get extra income. But that means a menial labour job for the day. Whee.

Zedd is right Ethan, why don't you look for a job on your next day off? Don't quit and be looking, do it while you still have the job.

That is likely what will happen, but it really depends.
I'm actually considering a psuedo-vacation of sorts, where if I quit/the store does tank, I'll take a couple of weeks off to gather myself, plan where I wanna go, then look for work again. I've brought the idea up with my mom and she's for it so long as my brother is (by then) permanent in his work (yes, he got a job!).

Well, that is one way to go about it. Also, you can first find out your school schedule.

Indeed!
My boss also said to wait until I find out if I get in this semester before worrying about the schedule here at work.
I'm a little bit more relaxed to the idea of working more hours here. Mostly cause I ran out of money >_>

At least you're relaxed at work.
My assistant manager quit, so now I'm being crash coursed on being manager until our real manager is back from Sri Lanka. They expect me to do everything right with no training on how to do the paperwork properly. and without any extra pay.
I've been aplying for more work. I'm getting pretty fed up.

Gone over two weeks without a day off. I have one coming up tomorrow but I might have to work that one now since my manager, whom just got back to the country from visiting his home country, found out his car won't start at his brother's place about 300km away.
Says he can't make his shift. I've been looking forward to this all week and I might have to work.
i've been heavily stressed, with stress headaches, anxiety attacks, shaking, and completed exhausted. I've had to learn most of the things a manager has months to learn in training in a matter of a couple days and I"m still responsible for any messups that occur.
I get home and I'm a zombie.
Zedd is burned out.

Well, phoned our district manager.
I won't really go into details, but we get paid commission and bonus pay based on the amount you sell per hour. If you're under a certain amount, you don't get s**t.
I told my DM I want my commission at the second tier, which doubles it, and my bonus pay. I probably sounded incredibly pissed since my manager called and said his car won't work. The DM told me I might have to work all of thursday alone and I snapped on the phone.
He promised me my second tier commission and my spiffs. He said he might have to move some of my OT time onto the next paycheque to do it, but he'd do what he could to get it for me.
He damn well better for what I did for this store over the last couple of weeks.

Go Jer! Way to get angry!
I know anger and being pissed isn't the most positive of emotions and chemical reactions, and it might not feel too good, but if it can get some things done, well...
I know I've also gone off on tirades about customers getting pissed, but in this case Jer has a legit reason to be pissed!! When there's a legit reason, and as long as it's constructive anger, it's fine!
