The graveyard was a very calming place in the midafternoon. The sun, which was so strong every where else was muted here but the large amount of dust floating about in the air. The air was still now, quiet. Quiet was something Mafa was dearly starting to miss. Stealthly, she snuck out of her den, careful not to disturb her now snoozing newly born pups. They were being quite the hassle. Mabozi hadn't been this difficult. Well, probably because there was only one of him, as with this litter, there were five little demons to look after. Well, four little demons. One little treasure.
Mafa took a deep breath of fresh air as she stepped out of the den. It was refreshing out here, she enjoyed it. Now that she wasn't pregnant anymore, she felt like she was in a better mood in general. It was a good feeling. Slowly, the female prowled over to one of the large tusks protruding from the head of her den. Hopping up, she laid down on the large structure, warming up in the heat of the sun.

A large pile of bones belonging to the remains of a deceased elephant slowly rustled. Momentarily the hyena known as Kivumbi leaped out of the pile chasing after a small graveyard mouse. She hadn't eaten much lately, not only because of graveyard conditions, but partially due to depression. She continued chasing the mouse as it jolted under a skull, Kivu quickly dug her paws into the dirt, a large cloud of dust arose. She slowly inhaled and choked on the debris in the air, shaking her head down in disappointment.
Kivumbi looked around the graveyard and started heading back in the direction she came from. Small rays of sunshine tore through the muffled clouds above shown on Kivu warming her body. The sun felt warm and soothing as it always did in the graveyard. She then sat down, pawing at the earth and began pondering the possibility of venturing elsewhere.

There was a rustling in the distance; Mafa's ears perked quickly. She stood, on high defense. Leaping down from the tusk, she moved to the mouth of her den, blocking the entrance. She did this rather subconciously, her maternal instincts taking over in defending her pups before she could even think.
The rustling didn't subside, something was out there, and as she tested the winds, Mafa didn't recognize the scent. It wasn't a lion, though, fortunately. She was in no condition to fight off a lion. There was suddenly a shadow in the fluttering light. Mafa squinted to see. Definitely the form of a hyena, it was rather large, a female. With a loud growl, Mafa signaled her presense to the other, also gesturing that this other female ought to be wary.

Kivumbi heard a muffled growl in the distance and felt as if she were being watched. She cocked her head to the right a bit to see the outline of another hyena glaring at her. The hyena was standing in the entrance of her den in the ready position to strike if need be. Kivu slowly walked towards the den with her head lowered as a sign of submission. As she approached the hyena she recognized a familiar scent, but couldn't quite place it. Once she could see the whites of the other hyena's eyes she paused and stood there for a moment to see what the stranger's next move would be.

Mafa arched her neck, making herself look like quite the force to be reckoned with. It wasn't that she was feeling intimidated, it was more of the fact that she had to show this stranger who was the boss around here. Prowling forward a few steps, Mafa's lips raised in a silent snarl as she spoke,
"What brings you here to my humble home?"
In her voice there rung a condescending tone, cold, aqua eyes now focused in on the other hyena. She couldn't place it, but this hyena reminded her of something. Perhaps it was the distinct fur color, perhaps something else. She simply couldn't put a paw on it, for the moment.

The hyena now started to make it's way towards Kivumbi. As the hyena approached, Kivu squinted to get a better look at the face of the stranger. She then noticed that she was looking at no stranger. She definitely had previously encountered this hyena before. Suddenly the hyena spoke to her.
"Just looking for a bite to eat." said Kivu in a muffled tone. "Haven't we met before?" asked Kivu. She was now inching her way closer to the den to have a better look at the hyena.

Mafa scoffed at the female's words. A bite to eat? Here? She must have been out of her mind. Even Mafa didn't hunt here, she went out to the southlands, where animals actually lived. Shaking her head, she snapped at the other,
"Well then, you'll have no luck here."
As the other spoke again, Mafa's eyes glazed over slighty. She reached into her thoughts, trying to place where she'd seen this hyena before. It sure as hell hadn't been a recent meeting, that was for sure. Without sudden prompting, Mafa's gaze snapped back to the female,
"What's your name?"

"Hmm no food here..." thought Kivu to herself, "Figures..." She assumed she would have to hunt elsewhere to find anything worth satisfying her hunger.
The female she had so vaguely remembered then gazed at her and asked for her name.
"Kivumbi, Kivu for short" she said with pride.
"...and yours?" questioned Kivu in a cocky tone.
She stared off at the clouds moving across the translucent sky waiting for a response.

Mafa's chin tilted up in a rather authorative gesture. Her eyes narrowed. Kivumbi, it did spark something in her memory, something from her younger years. Perhaps....
"Tukutu. You wouldn't happen to know Tukutu?"
This wouldn't be the hyena that had had a bit of a spark for her ex-mate? Mafa felt smug, this would be interesting. However, her smugness faded as Kivu posed her question. Her lip drew up in a snarl. Mafa wasn't very happy with others taking clever tones on.
"Mafa, alpha of this pack. I'd suggest you watch your place."

Mafa, eh? Kivu thought to herself. She remembered this name from long ago. She progressively began to recall this hyena named Mafa.
"Alpha, huh? You must be pretty popular around here." added Kivu sarcastically.
She knew her cocky attitude would probably cause this hyena to disapprove of her, like many others she had encountered. Considering Mafa was very stern Kivu immediately took favor in her. She decided to act in a more respectable manor, especially around Mafa, if she ever wanted to be accepted.

"Not popular. I could care less about who likes me or not. I'm respected, and that's what I need."
Mafa spoke coldly, her tone biting. She stood in silence for a bit, eyes narrowing further on Kivu. Mafa despised not being respected. The alpha took a slow step forward,
"Well, do you know him? Remember him?"
Mafa tilted her head to the side a bit arrogantly, swatting her tail behind her in a show of lack of patience.

Kivu was partially irritated at how impatient Mafa was, but let it go.
"Hmm...Tukutu, yeah I remember him. Not very well though. We were friends growing up, but we lost touch and haven't spoke since then."
Kivu pawed at the ground a bit, bored with Mafa's seemingly meaningless question.
"So, what's your life like here? How's your pack?"

Mafa perked her ears, nodding slowly. It was starting to come back to her, ever so slightly. A time where she and Tukutu had been pretty close. Those days had long passed. Since Mabozi, she hadn't seen hair nor hide of that mutt. Tossing back her angry thoughts, Mafa looked back sternly to Kivumbi.
"Tukut's been... absent. But regardless, he is useless eitherway."
There was a bitterness in Mafa's voice as she spoke of the male. It wasn't that she cared for him in the lightest sense. She had just... expected more.
"The pack prospers. There's more hyenas than ever before..."

Kivu decided just to bear with Mafa's irritable attitude, though she didn't think she had done anything to annoy Mafa.
Kivu looked at Mafa. "Well, that's good that your pack is prosperous. Would you be obliged to induct me into your pack? she asked nervously. "Only if there is room of course."
She bowed her head in submission of Mafa to show her loyalty.

Mafa's ears perked, eyes narrrowing in thought. So this new comer wanted in to her pack, eh? Well, perhaps she wasn't so new after all. Mafa was never in a position to deny any one from joining her pack. They were all hyenas, and they had to stick together. Her pack was home for all of her kind... Except those that allied with the lions. Those she despised and saw a traitors.
"Room? There is always room. You're willing to help eliminate the lion scum, of course?"
