She twitched an ear at the sound of snow clumps falling off pine branches. It was an unusually mild day of winter, and just warm enough to help ease the cold burden of the trees.

The female sniffed the air. As usual, she found nothing of interest and continued on. Her light orange fur had been no help hiding her from the smaller creatures this winter. Somehow, she had managed to fill her belly well enough despite of it all.

Thatch jumped at the sound of a far off crow. The large ebony birds always seemed to make the fur of her back stand on in. Such vile things, they were, and surely part of something sinister and evil. Her ear flicked again, followed by the sudden swishing of her tail.

Another stirred in the warming lands, velveteen nostrils flared as she trotted hither and thither. Tentatively her tail flicked, conveying the true depth of subdued irritation she experienced. After tracking a snowshoe hare in the undergrowth and finally finding the appropriate time to spring she had been distracted by the sudden, dramatized flight of a roused bird. She had nearly stumbled and upon righting herself realized the hare had already sprang far from her current position, leaving little possibility to a successful chase. Still, she had given chase if only to briefly provide herself with hope.

Obviously it hadn’t ended well, just as anticipated. At the very least it had warmed tiny Vanya up further and so at least there was something to be thankful for from the lost prey. She wasn’t exactly starving either, merely hungry enough to start seeking out a next meal.

In any case, she now paused her pace-like gait to survey the land around here. She wasn’t exactly used to the terrain she had ended up in and it didn’t settle well with her either. Especially after the winged scavengers vocalized a crackling caw, sending momentary shudders along her spine. Crows were often viewed as omens…

Did something disastrous lie in wait here?

Lady Ayasha
