The day was cool, the sky covered in clouds. Though mid-morning, it felt more like evening, and shadows coated the rocky forest below like a velvety second skin.
Some time ago, the great jagged boulders had wrenched their mossy backs from the earth as it heaved. Now the gnarled roots of trees anchored them soundly to the ground, and lichens and mosses turned the weathered rock myriad shades of green. In full sunlight it was a beautiful sight, at least to some, but few Ulaya came here anymore. More than one kit had slipped and fallen while playing, and the rocks were especially treacherous in the mornings. The solitude suited Kuragari perfectly.
The ink-dark fur of the godling kit blended seamlessly with the shadows of the rocky crevice he was perched in. With his eyes shut, as they were now, all that could be seen was a metallic shimmering at forehead and paws and his faintly glowing crescent moon marking - if the observer's eyesight was very good. His ears occasionally swiveled to pick up the noises of wildlife around him. That rhythmic knocking two trees to the left was a woodpecker; he could hear two other birds of a type he didn't know scolding each other and what was probably a foraging squirrel in the opposite direction. The kit let his mind drift with the innocent sounds of life, trying not to remember why he was here. Trying not to remember why he had chosen a place so far from other Ulaya...

Nebulous sat atop a large rock, watching the world go by, ever so slowly. And letting her dark fur absorb the heat from the sun. She needed a break from her loud family. Aoi being emo, and Kyon always being silent. Tulio always bickering and lashing out at anyone getting too close. And Miguel with his questions. She'd grown weary of her hectic home life. The silence was all she needed. This place, in all it's silence and beauty, was her temple of sanity. She breathed in happily. Her she could be free, she could show all the emotions she kept pent up inside. She hated showing others her emotions, but sometimes she needed to let them out. She continued to look and listen to everything around her, peacefully.

Kuragari also allowed himself to relax a little. He had the area to himself - or so he thought. Until suddenly... what was that strange rustling noise? Certainly not a bird or squirrel - it sounded big. Hopefully for whatever-it-was, not quite big enough to be another Ulaya, though, unless it was a kit like him. Kuragari opened his eyes, but still couldn't see anything from where he was. So the godling got to his feet and jumped down from his perch in one fluid, silent motion, padding on soft feet over to the source of the sound.
By the time he got there, the rustling had stopped. Slitted pupils scanned the area; there were no creatures in sight. But he was at the base of a well-aged oak tree - could there be something up in its branches? He considered it carefully, noticing that the bark had been scratched away in places higher up the trunk. Curious now, he looked up into the high branches of the tree - just in time to receive an acorn squarely in his left eye. The kit made a strangled noise that was half bark and half hiss as multicolored spots danced across his vision. Was that what pain felt like?

Nebulous flinched at a sudden, unexpected sound coming from the trees near her. She let off a low growl. Half at whatever made the sound that disturbed her joyus solitude, and half at herself for flinching. She slowly stood up to examine the area near her, but she couldn't see anything. Reluctently she gave into the urge to know what was going on, and made her way into the trees.
Not more than five trees into this small 'forest' she spotted a small dark bundle. It seemed confused, or dazed. Nebulous wandered closer to try and get a better look. Crouched down low, and wings spread flat she crept quietly forward.

All right. There was obviously something up there, and Kuragari just as obviously couldn't let whatever-it-was get away with attacking him, the god of fear, like that. He had never felt pain before and he didn't like it one bit. The sable godling glared up into the treetops - it was more of a baleful squint, really, because of the pain in his eye - and dug his claws into the bark of the tree.
So intent on the climb was he that Kuragari was completely unaware of both the irritated growl, and the fact that he was now being watched from another direction.
