Have you ever been diagnosed with a mental illness, and then have a family or a friend straight out tell you "You Don't Have ___". Or, if you have anxiety (disorder not just the emotion) or something similar to it, and your friends just say they have had anxiety problems too.(Ex: One friend is trying to get into some fancy school and only stresses about her grades compares me to her brother. The other one had some of her hair fall out, in the past, and she only stresses about grades and how much mail from colleges she gets. She saves them .) They it's all because you are a high achiever.(Especially when you're not a high achiever.)

I think a lot of people try to make us feel better by saying they experience something similar. But it doesn't help at all!

In some instances people try their best to relate their own experiences because they don't want to acknowledge you may have a problem from their point of view. People also relate their own experiences so you know that you are not alone and possibly show that your experience is not serious. The problem that you may have may be serious to you but not to someone else. Everything is subjective when it comes to mental illness. The only individuals that can tell that nothing is truelly wrong with you is a doctor or psychologist.

Yeah, I agree with everyone it is HUGELY annoying when people 1) Try to tell you you don''t have what you have 2) Try to minimize the problem even when they KNOW it''s true! I tried to talk to a former friend of mine, note the word FORMER, and she began to talk about how her boyfriend had been mean to her. Sorry toots, a boyfriend''s screw-ups don''t enter the same UNIVERSE as dealing with mental illness!!

Well, it fine to me if you want share problems, but don't go at it like you've experienced something you haven't, and I don't want to here what your family or friends have problems with unless I ask.

It really ticks me off when they do that. I really hate people who think ADHD is just a myth for doctors to get money, when there are actull studies over it, and how it works into place.

tarot_disaster i think that everybody sufers from anxiety disorders and depression one time or another i just think that now adays people think that it would make there life more interesting if they had one... o maybe they think they do but really don't... Let me put it this way. Yes, everyone has a hard time for some reason or another, and that can cause temporary problems. Also, we all experience the feelings of anxiety and depresion. That's normal, but there is a difference between clincal depression and being depressed. There's also a difference between anxiety-and even experiencing panic attacks-and having a type of anxiety disorder. My point is that everyone experineces anxiety, depression, and I'm sure plenty of people have panic attacks. However, there is a line between a disorder and what is normal.

I hated it when my friend, who just broke up with her boyfriend, was acting like it was the most important thing in the world when I was busy dealing with my own problems plus two suicidal friends. They hadn't even properly broken up yet.
The worst I've ever had is when my therapist said I didn't have OCD when I'd been diagnosed with it, and put it down to anxiety.

The thing that bothers me (besides the whole "oh, that's not a big deal" attitude towards depression... it's called "the common cold of mental illness" which I think seriously downplays how horrendously difficult it can be to live with) is when people are like "only weak people need medication" or "you should just pull yourself out of it, that's what I did! One day I decided not to be depressed anymore, and then I wasn't!" AAAARGH!

the problem is with that "common cold" analogy most people wil go through depression but its not the kind we here talk about and people dont relize it. thiers a difference whn theres an obvious cause and a plan to fix it and there ya go. but the illness of depression is so much more complex. And people have to try to relate somehow so they take from thier limited experince and alot of times they put there foot in thier mouths cuz they are ingorant. You just gotta rember they dont know anybetter and forget about em.

Exactly. There's a huge difference between "I'm depressed because I lost my job and my cat died" and "I'm depressed even though I have a great life and lots of friends and an awesome future ahead of me." I wanted to kill myself when I was making straight As and had tons of people who loved me. My life was great, but to me it was hell.

On my cell.
Me: OHMYGAW -screams- Chelle: Whaaat? Me: My knee lskdjflskdjflkjdfklsdfhxhcfOMG Chelle: That's not funny. -click-
People do that with physical issues, too. I have seriously ******** up knees; patellar luxation, because they're kinda deformed. Not like you'd notice, you can't tell unless you have an x-ray. But enough to cause pain just walking. Anyways, my kneecap shifted (this has happened 27 times in the last 4 years, yes, I count) while I was on the phone with Chelle. She wouldn't beleive me, even when I IMed her later to b***h at her for it.
People just seem to want to ignore or minimize problems, like saying that either you're exaggerating it, making it up, or it's all in your head. Patellar luxation is not in your head. Panic attacks are not in your head.
People also seem to want to try to relate, sometimes just to cover up the fact that they have issues, maybe worse than yours, but they have NEVER experienced what you went through. I don't want to hear about you having a panic attack when you were six, okay? So, you cried. Big fsking deal. Try vomiting every morning because of seratonin levels in your brain. Try getting random phobias of nearly everything. Try not being able to walk around the block.
People need to shut the ******** up. EOS.
