I have a psych professor who really makes me wonder, sometimes. She had us do this activity where we thought of the most traumatic event/experience in our lives and recorded and discussed how we reacted to it. Needless to say, this was less than fun for me and another woman in my class. The first day, I nearly had a panic attack, but I (just barely) held myself together. I thought we were done, but no, the next day of class she wanted us to go more in-depth into the activity. I raised my hand and asked to leave, saying that it was making me really uncomfortable. The other woman left, too.

This prof has a pretty much full-time practice. She calls herself a "holistic psychotherapist"... which in her case translates pretty neatly into "aging new-age hippy stuffed full of psychobabble and inane ideas".

She chose her first semester of teaching to quit smoking (yay for learning to teach with frazzled nerves and mood swings), and always comes off really falsely friendly.

The woman claims that she "doesn't want to grade us", but, well, she has to. And she seems to translate the "I don't want to grade" in her mind into "I don't have to actually read the whole chapter that I'm quizzing on," "I don't have to stick to the material in the book," and "I don't have to actually tell the people in my class how I'm formatting the test or give them a study guide... I can, in fact, have them write up the test questions for me."

Any suggestions for dealing with this person? I'm pretty close to going to the department chair (he's my prof for another psych class) and seeing what can be done on his part to keep this woman in line. Problem with that being that I'm not sure whether or not she'd be resentful of me going over her head like that.

O.o

Phsychobitch.

My drama teacher was like that in 7th grade. Before I was on medication. He said think back to the saddest, scariest, most negatively-emotional time in our lives. I told him I didn't want to think about it, but that was too bad for me. Ran out of the room crying and so far that's been the only class I've ever played hooky on.

Go to the department head. Tell the department head not to name you when speaking with your teacher. That way, the department head can bring up her issues with something anonymous like "it has come to my attention that..." rather than putting you in the line of fire.

My parents say that I should wait until the end of the semester, just jot down a list of things she does. I'm still not really clear on why, other than maybe because I'm still under her thumb, at this point. I'm seeing my shrink tomorrow, and I'll talk to him about it.

I just recently had an issue with my English teacher, and I did go talk to my deans about it (in your case, dept. head would be good). I actually found out that just telling them these things made me feel a bit better, and they eventually told the teacher (leaving names out and everything) and he got a lot better...I think often teachers don't realise what they're doing is making students less than comfortable, and just pointing things out to them makes them try to adjust, in most cases...otherwise, she'd probably be fired if she actually did give you a panic attack, since, well...that's inexcusable. I'd be the same way, though...I suppose if I was supposed to think of the most traumatic/depressing event, I'd say all the time sweatdrop

Well, another student was talking to the dept. chair about that same prof today, so I mentioned the incident in relation to how I should approach her about it. Chair-man was very understanding and gave me some good advice, and it did feel good to talk to him about it.

I had a teacher who was drunk in class and brought Vodka with her every where.

We had an unsubstantiated rumor of that with an English teacher of mine in High School.

Serious? Nasty sad I don't know about you guys, but people at my uni are very report happy. This lecturer made a joke in trying to get people to be quiet by saying that he would look up people's addresses on the registry thingo if they won't be quiet. It was an obvious joke, but people felt uncomfortable about it and complained. The lecturer appologied for it later.

If you really feel uncomfortable in her class, talk to someone abuot it, and explain your situation.
