Beryl bounded freely over the soft green grass of spring. Her wings beat in time with her bounds and she still hoped that they might lift her off the ground on one of her leaps. No luck yet, but she was still trying. Her parents said that nothing ever happened if you didn't try and Beryl wasn't going to let herself get stuck doing nothing.
She skidded to a stop when she saw the sunlight glinting off something in the grass. "What is that?" She said the words out loud and bent over to peer down at the mysterious object. It was just about her color but with a shiny iridescence to it. She reached out a hoof to nudge at it and pulled back with disgust when she saw little legs wriggling beneath it. "A bug!" Why did everything that looked pretty end up being a mushroom or a bug? Beryl didn't understand the world sometimes.

Finnian raced through the tall grass of the meadow like a demon was chasing him. He had just escaped the watchful eyes of his family yet again and to him, his angry mother was like a demon chasing him, maybe even worse. He began to slow down to a trot once he figured he was far enough away that she wouldn't be able to get to him for a while.
He laughed in triumph and pranced through the meadow unaware that another foal was already there.

Beryl was still too engrossed with her find to notice the other foal for another minute. When she did notice him she gave a little jolt of surprise that quickly made way for calm sureness. Other foals might be shy and afraid of strangers, but not Beryl. She loved meeting new people.. and trying to figure out how they worked inside their head.
"Hey, you!" she shouted to him to try to get his attention. While she waited for a reply she admired the strong red color in his coat. Her family was all blues. They didn't have such a startling and warm color in their midst.
In the back of her mind she wondered what the first soquili had to do to get a red coat. Probably something unpleasant, she decided.

At the sound of someone calling to him, Finnian stopped instantly and looked about. He hadn't noticed there was someone else, other than himself, there in the meadow. It wasn't long before his eyes spotted a dark colored foal with interesting wings on their back. He had never seen such a sight as that before and his curiosity was going to get the better of him.
"Hey yourself!" he called back and began to make his way over to the other foal. He wanted to get a closer look at those wings and make sure they really where what he was seeing.

"That's right. That's a really interesting color." Beryl cocked her head as she said this, the words more to herself than to him. It reminded her of something... maybe of the sun when it hung low in the sky... or a strawberry... or a...
"A cardinal!" She hit upon the word with a smug smile. "You look like a cardinal. They're red birds and about the same color as you. They even have markings around their eyes, but theirs are black and yours are white. You're like a cardinal." She nodded, pleased with her deduction. Beryl wasn't about to waste time with introductions when there were such discoveries to be discovered and explained!

He tilted his head to the side as he thought about her discovery. He had never thought about his coloring like that before and the more he thought about it the more he liked the idea of looking like a cardinal. Only he didn't have wings and that was a little disappointing to the red colt.
"I do look like a cardinal except that I don't have any wings. So I really can't be a cardinal...but I can pretend to be!" he said all excitedly and bounced a little. Then he realized that the weird wings on her back kinda looked like a butterfly's wings. "You look like a butterfly! Only way bigger and with larger wings!" he said getting even more excited about his own discovery. He would so have to tell his mother he met a giant butterfly today after she was done with scolding him.
