Kane's nose was pressed down to the forest floor. Red eyes concentrated hard on the hidden smell trail he was following. Ears were flicking around warily. Normally he'd be alert, and watching out for danger. This was a special occasion though.

He could smell them. Nani and Shadow. His pup memories were a little blurry but he remembered the two pups he had saved. He recognized their scent from the time they all crowded into a den to keep warm. His heart was beating hard with excitement. He had always believed he would meet the two again! He wanted to see how they were doing, wanted to surprise Shadow and see who's dominate after all this time had passed. He wondered if Shadow looked hot now. He grinned mischievously, it had become a new hobby to get close to straight males and make them...uncomfortable with his presence.

He was bigger and taller now. He now knew more about himself and what he liked. He wasn't much faster, northerners really never were. They relied on power and ambush in hunting. Kane wondered how the two looked like. Did they remember him?

He was so deep in thought that he accidentally mistook a new sweeter scent laced with fear for that of Nani's. He paused, wondering if Nani was in trouble. There was something male about it though. It wasn't Shadow. It wasn't Nani, though he smelled of them both too. Stranger?!

Kane lifted his head up, some male out there smelled HOT. What was with the fear scent though? Was there trouble? He searched for the helix, and for the danger. Red eyes scanned his surroundings with suspicion and a hint of curiosity. He perked his ears and tail up with confidence. He wasn't afraid, he'd tail slap whatever dared to try and ruin his good day!

Comhnall had been enjoying a nice day out, the sun on his back, the wind at his tail, and a beautiful clear sky. He puffed his chest proudly, strutting around in one of his fantasies again, believing no one to be around to see him. He had no knowledge of Nani's close proximity because of the direction the wind was blowing and he was padding away from her, suddenly pouncing on a branch. "Defeat!" he snarled playfully, batting it away.

Ever since his meeting with Nani, he could feel his self-esteem raise, little by little, and he was taking the moment to do one of the many things he was too cowardly to do as a young helix: play.

The branch fell into a nearby river with a 'plop!' and Comhnall, ears twitching nervously at the fast moving current, decided to look for other means of amusement. He shook his head, imagining himself a warrior again, and bounded after a rock, his new enemy. He reared on his hind legs and leapt forward but inexperience and excitement made him use too much strength and he tumbled into a nearby bush to grazing lands and crashed right into a baby lynx. The young kit gave a grunt of fear and surprise and Comhnall cowered from it as well. Its mother, watching close by, believed him to be after her offspring and roared. She landed to the ground gracefully and swiped at Comhnall's unprotected flank. He yelped with pain and tried to crawl away until the father came and both parents surrounded him as the kit retreated to a safe distance.

Kane decided the roar meant trouble as he thought. He ran toward it, toward the wonderful scent laced with fear. He came upon a scene out of a dream and a nightmare at the same time. He froze, forgetting to breathe.

A hot-pink helix was the male. Kane wanted to run over and spend the rest of the day figuring out why he liked his unique scent. His fur was silky and soft looking. He had these red and white markings that decorated his body in this mysterious, almost tribal way. Sun rays shimmered off his back, giving him this heavenly glow. His eyes were opened wide, a sea of tropical blue ocean pools. A fluffy plush tail was hidden beneath him, trapped in a cage of four legs. Kane was stunned, he looked FABULOUS!!!!

His posture was fearful, and very submissive. There was no sign of aggression in him, not even a defensive snarl to fight back. He looked small and helpless like that, almost delicate. Kane felt a surge of protectiveness wash over him. He saw the lynx scratch him. The yelp of pain tore out his heart and demanded he take action.

You did NOT just do that! What are you teaching your cubs? Two on one fights are NOT fair! We'll see how YOU like being ganged up on. You don't want to even KNOW how many friends I have to back me up. There's only two of you, you really don't want to mess with us, p***y cats. You just focus on your cubs and leave this fellow alone." Kane warned, the fur on his neck rose with hostility as he growled. Baring his teeth, he stood beside the stranger protectively. He had no idea who he was but he was taken care of now! "Don't even worry about it, I got your back." Kane reassured him. He smelled a trace of blood. He glared with renewed anger at the lynxes. They hurt him! They did it! They marred his beautiful scent with pain!!!! How dare they?!!! His protective instincts kicked into overdrive and he was ready to take them both on if he had to. He stood in front of his pink stranger and started backing up slowly. He wasn't afraid, he just wanted to get the stranger to safety first. He knew intuitively that this helix was not used to battle. He'd protect him.

Comhnall thought he was done for, and a pitiful whine slid from between his lips. What a fool he was, he thought. Dying on the day he decided to play make-believe with inanimate objects. He cringed when the lynxes stepped forward and dragged himself backward, still desperate for life in the seemingly hopeless situation. At least until a light grey and dark red figure appeared, his fur glowing white in the sunlight drifting from the skies.

The male's courage against the lynxes awed him and Comhnall crouched hopefully, wondering if he should run for it or stay and help this stranger. He froze in terror when the male looked at him but was reassured by his words and he gave a small, frightful nod, backing away when the other did, for fear of touching and enraging him.

Kane kept his head and tail up, but nose down and mouth wide open, exposing his teeth. His fur along his neck and back were raised in aggression. He tried to make himself look bigger and stronger than he truly was. If he presented himself as too big to gang up on then they'd back off as long as they left their cubs alone. He noticed the lynx start to follow them and he jerked forward a bit, snapping his jaws. The two cats retreated back a step. Kane began his retreat again, slowly. The parents split up, one on each side of them. It was the stranger they were after. If he fought one parent the other would start hunting this pink helix. The whine distracted him a little. "Trust me." He requested, trying to get the helix to stop that sound. He really badly wanted to keep this male from harm. It was hard to think when all he wanted to do was attack the cat for hurting the pink one.

Kane had to plan something, quickly!!! He had to protect this guy! Red eyes darted left and right, from one parent to the other. They'd have only two chances. He'd give them both a reason not to go after pinky. "Run!" Kane ordered. Kane himself, didn't run. He attacked, leaping forward toward the cubs. They should have known not to leave their little ones out in the open like that. Now they'd pay! Oh, he wouldn't hurt the cubs but he'd sure give their parents a scare. If he timed it right they would chase him and he would leap over the cubs at the last second, then he'd make a wide circle and find the other helix again.

Comhnall's ears twitched with surprise when the stranger told him to run. It had been a while since he had met anyone who sacrificed their well-being for him and this left him with uncertainty. He wondered if he should stay, to help the helix who so courageously offered to help him. He took a step forward, and for a moment, it seemed as if he would stay, the sun hitting his eyes in a way that made it seem some bravery had entered him. And then... he was gone.

Being the coward that he was, he ran, ran as fast as he could, even when he believed the light silver male couldn't stand a chance against two adult lynxes. The guilt ate at him. It called him a coward, one who did not deserve life. All the names he was called as a pup and later as an adult were all true. All of them.

He howled as he ran, his voice full of self-pity, sadness, and confusion. Why had the stranger helped him? he thought, thinking the male dead by now. Why did he risk his life to save one as worthless as him?

The plan didn't work as well as he hoped it would have. He landed on his injured foot, the leg that had gotten stuck in a bear trap during a fight with a criminal named Verdauga. It had been Verdauga, himself, that saved him by telling him how the contraption worked.

A little blood seeped from the deep cuts that were still healing. He half limped, half run as fast as he could. The lynxes chased, encouraged by his weakness. A flare of panic overtook him, the weak died. He didn't want to die! Verdauga had shown him that you could survive through horrendous injuries and make it out okay.

Their cubs saved his tail by crying for their mother. The parents gave up, returning to their den. They easily could have tired him out and killed him. Thanking the gods he made a wide turn around the lynx den and followed the mournful howl. He was almost kind of pleased, he was a stranger yet already the pink male was sad over his 'death.' He howled back, calling him. If the male was still running there was no way Kane could catch up. He had opened his wounds and tired himself out.

Nervous about the smell of blood attracting predators he sat on top of a rock. Now he could see in all directions. Kane bent his head, giving his wounded leg a cleaning with his toungue. He also stepped on the leg to apply pressure to it. Maybe then it would stop bleeding.

Comhnall's howl was instantly cut off when another howl filled the air and at first, he cringed away from it, mistaking it for a hunting howl. When he realized it was a calling howl, though, he paused, ears twitched. It sounded similar to the male who had saved him but he couldn't be sure. Still thankful of his rescuer, though, he decided to brave it out and padded slowly towards the noise, trying to keep his paw-steps light and silent.

As he neared his destination, he caught the scent of blood and, cowering, he crept closer to the rock, hiding in the trees. He watched the male on the rock, glad to see there weren't any life-threatening wounds. The male seemed to be licking only his leg. He was surprised that the male had managed to escape alive against two full-grown lynxes and that they weren't after him now. He longed to know but, still fearful and ashamed of his actions, he merely stood where he was, watching the other.

Satisfied with the leg for now, Kane looked up and smiled to see the pink one approaching. "So your here! Are you okay? I smelled that you were scratched." Kane limped over to his fellow helix. Natural Northerner instinct caused him to try and hide his injury or fiercely defend it. "Don't mind me, I'm not hurt really." He sat down nearby, giving his fearful friend some space. "My name's Kane, what's yours?" Red eyes gazed at him kindly and also scanned his form. Kane couldn't get over how much he liked the male. He was checking him out. He stood and walked closer, sniffing at the blood until he found the scratch. "Does it hurt bad? Looks like she got you good. Hold still." He leaned closer and darted his toungue out, attempting to lick the wound clean gently.

Comhnall jumped in surprise when the male spoke to him, eyes wide, mouth parted slightly in surprise, body lowered respectfully and the smell of fear coming off of him in waves. It seemed he hadn't been as hidden as he thought.

His mouth opened and closed but no words came. This was too unexpected. Flattening his ears and rolling to his back, he tried to show his submission to the older male who had hopped off the rock and started to limp towards him. Comhnall had to admire that. "Ah... um, well uh...." Comhnall managed to say, when fright finally drove him to speak. He was glad the male didn't stop close to him but was uncomfortable with the way the male was watching. Even though his eyes were kind, staring usually meant he was offering up a challenge and Comhnall, not wanting to accept it accidentally, kept his eyes lowered although his fur still bristled when he felt the red and white male's gaze still on him. Sizing him up, probably, although it surprised Comhnall that the male would take so long. It didn't take much time to realize Comhnall was little to no threat to anyone.

"Hello, Kane." he said out of courtesy, his voice trembling. At least the male, Kane, didn't sound angry or cruel. He took it as a good sign, remembering his first encounted with Nani, and forced himself to continue. "My name's a... um... Comhnall." he said, his voice fading as he finished. He really was much more timid around males, who were much more likely to attack him than females.

When Kane stepped closer, a small whimper escaped him and he shut his eyes tight, expecting a beating for first ditching Kane and then causing him his wound. By the time Kane's question registered correctly into his brain, Kane's tounge had already started to tend to his still-bleeding flank and Comhnall froze up with fear. His position and limbs stiff with fright almost made it look as if he were dead, if not for the frightened breaths he was taking.

Kane had at first thought Comhnall was only afraid of the lynxes. Now it was apparent that he was afraid of helixes too. What had they done to him? Had they hurt him too, because they knew he wouldn't fight back? Usually Kane had to act defensive or aggressive to really prove his dominance. With the omega submitting so willingly Kane could let his guard down and just be himself. He appreciated the respect but he wished Comhnall wasn't so afraid of him. He'd have to approach this lovely helix a little differently if he was going to get anywhere. It was just as he suspected on first sight, Comhnall was fragile, delicate, to be handled with care.

He made sure the scratch was clean then sat beside him protectively. He waited for Comhnall to realize he was okay and the blows weren't going to come. "Thanks for going with my plan. It all worked out." He wanted to calm him by showing he had no reason to think he deserved any kind of beating. He'd have to talk about his wound. Being a Northerner, he was raised NEVER to talk about any kind of weakness. His teachings were simple, the weak died. Verdauga had proved those teachings wrong, one can survive horrible injuries and still live. He took a deep breathe, opened his mouth, paused, then closed his mouth again. It felt like he couldn't swallow, like someone was holding his mouth closed. He sighed, fighting the instinctive reaction to shut up.

"A bear trap caught me a while back. The lynxes didn't cause this." Kane said softly, ashamed of himself. He still believed he should have died, it was the Northern way. He still might, if it became infected. This was the first time he had been open about it to anyone, he knew Comhnall wouldn't taunt him about it. He wasn't the type. Kane was grateful for that, it was embarrassing enough.

He wanted to ask whose been hurting him but he didn't. The topic was probably something he wouldn't want to talk about. He switched to another topic. "You seen a white female helix by the name of Nani? Saved her life once when we were pups, haven't seen her since. Thought I smelled her nearby..." He couldn't smell either Nani or Shadow now. He was off the trail, but that was okay. He wanted to spend some time with this special helix instead. He'd find his friends afterward.

Comhnall breathed a sigh of relief (which he made sure was quiet, of course, so he wouldn't offend the male) when he felt Kane move away. He was still close but at least he wasn't touching him again. Looking up slightly, Comhnall fancied that Kane... the way he was sitting... it looked, well, protective. Comhnall blushed at the thought. No one had ever protected him before. Perhaps his mother did, but she never lived long enough for Comhnall to discover what she was like, and his father avoided all topics concerning her. When he realized what he was doing, he cleared the thoughts away. No. Kane wasn't protecting him. He had already done once and that only resulted badly. Suddenly, Kane spoke, and the sound caught Comhnall by surprise. He froze, before realizing he felt no harsh blows.

"Well, um, it was all your idea." Comhnall said in a small voice, averting his eyes away. His ears were flattened so low it looked as if he had no ears at all. When Kane spoke again, he looked up, until he remembered himself and he tried hard to focus on his paws. He nodded as Kane talked, his eyes flashing curiously, although he felt too afraid to ask the strong male who had escaped two full-grown lynxes any questions.

When Nani was mentioned, Comhnall's head snapped to face Kane and his eyes were wide with fear. "You... you know her?" he whispered. He was afraid Kane was a mercenary or something, out to harm Nani. Why else would he be so strong? Comhnall managed to calm some when he listened to the rest of Kane's words and he breathed a sigh of relief.

Finally, he rose uncertainly to his paws, making sure to glance at Kane often in case the male ordered him to go back to his previous position. When he was finally sitting upright (or at least, as upright as he allowed himself in the prescence of such a fearsome male), he clawed at an itchy ear, his tounge poking out of the corner of his mouth as it often did when he was nervous. He took a peek at Kane, feeling a burn of jealously. Who was he to Nani? Against such competition, Comhnall was sure he'd never win her affections. Desperate to know, he dug up his courage to ask a question, loud enough for Kane to hear. "Are you two friends?"

Kane noticed the jealous look hidden in his gaze and shook his head no instantly. Him? With Nani? Not happening!

"Yes I know her. No, not that way. I rough housed with one of her friends and she got annoyed with us, ditched us really. She got in a bit of trouble so we worked together to find and save her. In the end we were kind of friends but I left and haven't seen her since." Kane explained with more detail, realizing with a pang of disappointment that this fine male just may be taken. He wanted to know for sure though.

"What about you? You two friends...?" Had Shadow not revealed his feelings to Nani yet? Were they no longer friends at all? Had they separated? He had so many questions but they would wait until later.

He focused on Comhnall. He was talking without stuttering now, which was nice. He was still tense, but giving off subtle sighs of relief. At least he wasn't running away!
PostPosted: Thu Apr 30, 2009 10:15 pm

Comhnall puffed with surprise when Kane said 'No, not that way.' and blushed, looking away. His lacked in the social department and so it was easy to read the emotions that flashed across his features. Comhnall listened quietly as Kane continued, sullen. Kane had saved her and had been her friend longer then him. At least they hadn't met often, Comhnall thought, a few sparks of hope flaring.

When Kane asked him a question, Comhnall smiled slightly at the thought, but it was soon gone, and his gloom returned. "Yes." he said, his voice a bit more confident as it always got when he spoke of Nani or with her. "Friends." Although he hoped he was something more to her, as she was to him. He didn't say this, though. It was instinct for helixes such as themselves to like competition, and to win it, too, and he feared that if he revealed his feelings too openly, Kane would catch interest and beat him for Nani's affections. He had never met Shadow and so thought little of him, merely thinking of him as Nani's childhood crush that she would grow out of. He hoped that, at least.

Kane saw the adorable blush and smirked. The gloominess he felt in the male confirmed his suspicion. How interesting...and depressing! Comhnall liked Nani, it seemed. Didn't sound like the feelings he carried were known or mutual. Maybe there was hope for him yet! He leaned close to Comhnall's ear while the male was looking away and whispered. "Comhnall...Don't worry, things can change." Kane was offering encouragement but he was also testing the omega's reactions.

He leaned his head away and studied the male's markings. He was in LOVE with Comhnall's tail. The markings were fascinating to him. The eyes, expressive and blue. His scent, sweet and vulnerable. "Things can turn out better in unexpected ways." He continued.
