Kamakana stood at the bank of a small creek, banks lined with ferns and smoothed gray stones that were cool even in the warm sunlight. A break in the trees overhead allowed a small stretch of clean grass and tiny wildflowers to grow along the bank, providing a perfect grazing or basking spot. The swift flowing water made a comforting lullaby as it cascaded over pooled pebbles.
Her wings fluttered at her side as she gazed into the trees, seeing the assorted array of branches yet not truly seeing them. Her mind was on different thoughts... the handsome, quirky stallion that she had been running into as of late. He was so different from others... whereas many stallions thought her too tough and tomboyish and brave, he handled her jokes and jests with ease, and even had sense to play back at her! And his voice... it was like a warm wind brushing over her skin, and she couldn't help but shiver every time she heard it. Though she wanted to deny it, there was only one reason she could be feeling this way, and staring into the trees with such a hopeful gaze...
She was falling for Naoki. Utterly, completely, and hopelessly falling for him.
She had always thought she'd be strong and steer away from males, yet here was this charmer who she couldn't resist. In a sense, she felt disappointed in herself and almost guilty, as if she had broken some promise. But now, as she waited for him, she couldn't deny the fact that her heart was beating faster in her chest, that the warm feeling in her heart could be nothing less than love...
"Will he come today?" she whispered to herself, the slow wind caressing her hair as she hoped Naoki would.

Naoki very quietly stepped increasingly closer to the mare who was daydreaming in the pool of sunlight. She hadn't scentetd him yet - he had done his best to stay downwind from her. Watching the ground carefully, he made sure not to step on any twigs that would snap and give him away.
Her scent filled his nostrils - it was slightly musky with a hint of floral. She looked beautiful just standing there, the sun's rays sparkling on her wings. He had never met anyone quite like her - most mares took offense to his jokes, but she teased him right back. Even though she looked dainty, there was a strength about her that made her irresistible.
He was close enough now to tenderly grab one of her tail hairs into his mouth... still she had no idea he was there. When it was firmly in his grip, he tossed his head back and pulled!

Kama hadn't seen, smelled, nor heard the stallion come up behind her. In fact, she had been expecting him to come from the trees in front of her, on the other side of the stream. Thus, the tug on her tail came as quite a surprise, and instead of giving a soft gasp or scream as a lady would, she quickly turned, startled, and shouted,
"What in the --! NAOKI!" One would be surprised at how fast her mood and expression changed! One moment she was angry, ready to strike at the stranger who had so rudely pulled her tail, then the next moment she had glimpsed her love, and her face changed into a large smile that she could barely contain. "Naoki, you came!"she exclaimed, swiftly nuzzling his cheek with her nose. Then, almost as an afterthought, she pulled back and put on a playful frown.
"It's not nice to sneak up on me like that, you know." She huffed at him, yet winked with one eye, knowing he would take no offense. Then she smiled again, and said, "You're late. But I don't mind--I've missed you!"

He nuzzled her quickly and said, "Well that makes on of us. I've been getting along just fine without you." He snorted after the words came out of his mouth and winked back at the beautiful mare. They had been spending a lot of time together lately... he had just seen her yesterday, but this moment couldn't have come soon enough for him. "You're much too easy to sneak up on you know - what if I were some Kalona come to eat you up?" He asked playfully.
"Anyway, what would you like to do today? The world is ours for the taking!" Anything was interesting when Kamakana was around. He wondered what he would do if he had never met her... it was a sad thought.

Kama feigned a frown at his first statement, but then let a side of her mouth quirk in a smirk as he winked. She could see where other mares might feel offended at such treatment, but to her, it was like a life-giving elixir. It was energy in itself--one could not simply survive on nuzzles and sweet words. Things would get boring that way!
"If you were the Kalona, Naoki, I might be willing to become your victim." She winked, fluttering her wings at him, then turned her head to the side to think of available options for the day.
"If only we could take the world! I could be a queen, you could be the king! And we'd do whatever we felt like." She paused, giggling, and said, "Then again, perhaps it would be too much responsibility. I've never been one to want to sit in one place day after day." She smiled, thinking of her foalhood adventures. How fun they had been!
"Let's go exploring, Naoki. Let's find somewhere we've never been before. Somewhere that can be all ours. Our own little hideaway." She nudged his shoulder, giving him a playful smile.

"That sounds good to me! We'll just pick a direction and go!" He loved her spontaneity. To be honest, it didn't matter what they did together, he was always happy when he was with her. The air smelled sweeter, the wind more cool, and all his senses were heightened.
He closed his eyes and began to turn around in circles rather quickly. "Tell me when to stop!" He shouted. "Whichever direction I'm pointed in then is where we'll go!"

Kama laughed at him as he spun, stepping out of the way to avoid being whipped by his flame-colored tail. "You look like such a dork!" she giggled, though her voice was not mocking and instead held true affection. It was moments like this that brought her closer to him. He could be the only other stallion left on earth, and she'd still never be bored with him.
"Stop!" she shouted, racing in to speed his halt. She nipped at his mane playfully, trying to stare down the direction that his nose was pointing in. It led through the forest, as all other paths did, but who knew what they'd find through those trees? As she had said, something they'd never seen before.
"Good pick, Naoki! Now, let's go!" She swished her tail at him, then laughed and trotted off in the direction he was pointing, gaining a head start. "Catch me, if you can!" she taunted, then picked up her speed.

You might be fast Kama, but you're no match for me! Thought Naoki as he bolted after her. Her wings must surely slow her down - he didn't have as much wind resistance as she did. He pushed even harder, and he was on her heels now. "I'm gonna get you Kama! ARRRRR!!!" He played the part of a scary Kalona, nipping at her heels.

Kamakana laughed freely, letting her tough facade go in favor of showing Naoki how much fun she was really having. She pushed herself hard, her feathers whipping around her face, but her wings really did slow her down and she could sense her mate coming fast behind her. She half-screamed, half-giggled when her nipped at her feet, and twisted to the side, glancing at him through mischievous eyes.
"Don't scare me too bad, Naoki, or I might have to fly away!" she threatened, though with a smile. She would never leave him, of course, and just the fact that he didn't possess wings made her wish to stay grounded for most of the time.
She sensed moving water ahead, and moved towards a small stream, glancing back at her mate. "Care for a swim, Naoki?" she called, flicking her tail playfully.

Naoki knew she was joking, but the thought of her leaving him behind was too painful to even imagine. He might act like he was care-free, but he definitely didn't take her for granted. He grinned back at her at the mention of swimming. "You know I can't resist a good cool-down, especially after that run! Lead the way my dear." He gently bit at her swishing tail and whinnied in delight. Nothing in the world could be better than spending this time with Kama.
