The hooded figure didn't travel all that far from where he'd run his game. He stood on the roof of the gym, only a few metres above the chasm where he'd held his game. He stood far enough back from the edge that the survivors wouldn't see him as they left. Some of them might have been too busy anyway, hightailing it before anyone got notions about killing for the pendant, but he wouldn't risk it.

Below him, the humans were still making their way about of the school grounds, avoiding the gaping chasm as best they could. (Wouldn't it suck to fall in now, when the game was over?) He spared an idle thought for them, but there was no guilt there. They'd face worse things than his games before the overall testing was through.

Fishing about under his cloak, he drew out the mobile phone the original hooded figure - the Hunter - had left him. Speed dial one... He let it ring, fighting the urge to pace anxiously as he waited for the Hunter to pick up.

"It's done," was all he said when the click of someone picking up could be heard.

There wasn't much else to say until the Hunter arrived and judged the-apprentice-Hunter-formerly-known-as-Delta-Seven's work. It had taken two tries to find someone he considered worthy. He hoped that wouldn't count against him. He also had to hope that his idea of worthy would line up with what the Hunter was aiming for.

"Here's hoping I pass," he muttered.

A slow clapping sound, syncopated, jarring.

"Congratulations, you passed the test!" The the two set figure with scythe simply stepped up from behind the assessed. They tilted their head sideways, making an exaggerated thoughful gesture. "But the question is did you learn anything from it? Now think very carefully before you answer me, other than killing them and testing, and testing you, might I add, what was the point of this entire exercise?"

They leaned in closer voice suddenly ominous. "Did you unravel the puzzle?"

Oh crap, now it seemed he was the victim of a twist, himself. Delta Seven crossed his arms over his chest, frowning behind his hood as he thought.

A puzzle? D7 had been so focused on carrying out his task that he hadn't stopped to think so hard on what else might be going on around here. Of course there would be more to it than the Hunter had told D7 in their last meeting. D7 shouldn't have taken everything at face value, should have looked deeper.

"Well," he said, resolving to try and talk his way through his muddled thoughts, "it seems like we're trying to force them into hating us 'Reapers'. Sort of making sure they've got it in them to attack monsters and the supernatural, without actually throwing them in the deep-end just yet."

The humans had no idea that the 'Reapers' they kept encountering were actually very human Hunters, after all. "The first group I found turned on 'a Reaper'," he used air quotes, "rather than hurt each other. So we might be testing their race loyalty, too."

And there was always the very important fact that the Hunter had somehow reanimated Delta Seven after his death. He wasn't quite 'alive', like some who'd come back from the dead, but he wasn't some ghostly spirit, either.

"You seem to have some control over dead spirits, here. The people you had me fight, who'd been brought back to life completely, and myself running around even though I died."

If Delta Seven followed that to it's natural conclusion...

"The winners of your test aren't necessarily the people who are still alive on Day 7," he realised, staring at the Hunter. "You could bring back anyone you judged as worthy, even if they had died over the course of the testing."

The Hunter had dangled the lure of bringing D7 back to life. It stood to reason that D7 wasn't the only one who could have his life returned that way.

No doubt there was more that Delta Seven couldn't see yet. Things like their missing memories, why the testing was taking place here rather than some facility or recognisable town or city. Delta Seven thought he was on the right track, though. Maybe it would be enough for the Hunter.

"Hate is a natural emotion." The figure paced slowly as they talked, with a destination of No Discernible Location. "So is loyalty, desire, judgment, yearning, fear. And it is true I could have brought them back but they could have brought themselves back as well."

They walked a little slower, waiting for the other to catch up. "This way, step lightly now, I like the rules you wrote for your own game, but sadly, all games must come to an end. Come now, through the door we go."

Said door seemingly appeared out of nowhere, though this time it lead to seemingly a black abyss. The figure had already disappeared within it.
