It was hot in the lowlands almost unbearably so. The pink scaled kirin was almost tempted to turn around and run right back to the mountain clearing near the springs that was her new home. The only thing that stopped her? The fact that Torao would only send her off again. He had wanted a bit of alone time with Hisoka and had kicked everyone out, in some cases literally. Thankfully not her, Hisoka would have killed her pretend husband if Torao had hurt her.
She turned her gaze down to the river that she had followed down the side of the mountain. The water would most likely cool her if she could get in it. The trouble was it was moving far to quickly to safely step into. She wasn't even sure she could walk on water moving this quickly. Not really caring to test her abilities she settled for bowing her head to sip at the rushing liquid. Her dark mane slipped in as well so that when she straightened up droplets of water ran over her body. She cracked a small smile, at least that helped kill the heat a little bit.

It was too hot for Rocket. Then again, it was always too hot to Rocket. If it wasn’t the dead of winter, it was too hot. Sweat trickled down his flanks, making them itch. He swung his head back to relieve the tickle, which in turn made him stop. Not that he minded. Rocket wasn’t exactly going anywhere. Since the spring thaw Rocket’s mood had gone quickly south and kept nose diving until today, when the temperature reached high enough to induce sweat. There had to be a rover nearby. Some feet back his ears had perked at the sound of rushing water. It could not be far off if he could hear it. The heat slowed Rocket down. It slowed him down in many ways. His spirit for adventure died with the white blanket of snow. He felt like a fool in this weather with him mind screeching to a crippling halt with the heat. His reflexes, if apparent at all, were as slow as his wit. Then there was the literal sluggishness of his body. Rocket’s hooves dragged in the dirt, caking his fetlocks with mud and staining them green. What he wouldn’t give for a drop of rain.
The sound of water grew and fell beyond the tree line before Rocket. He nosed the branches away, eyes drawn to the river. His heart fell at the sight of its speed. There was no way he could wade in this water. He looked farther up river for a moment. It didn’t slow down anywhere that he could see. But it had to slow down somewhere. He looked the other way, in the direction of its flow. Rocket knew he’d have better luck up river. Finally his attention left the river and traveled before him. The mare he’d missed before was visible now. And she looked about as miserable as he did. Rocket smiled gently and asked, “are you looking for calmer waters as well?”

Sabella's ears went back and her eyes widened as her heart jumped out of her chest for a moment. Perhaps it would be beneficial to her health for her to actually start paying attention to her surroundings. She turned her head slowly to see who was speaking and was able to relax a little to find a relatively normal looking soquili. She composed herself mentally before taking a step away from the water and bowing her head respectfully.
"Good day." She straightened up slightly after her greeting but would not meet his eyes. It wasn't proper for a mare to do such things and besides that she would have to tilt her head upward to do so. Such was the trouble that came from having such a small stature. She had been fortunate to find that Torao had been raised properly or she would constantly be straining her neck trying to meet his gaze.
"No, I'm afraid I am not. I'm only trying to pass the time until I may return."

She was kicked out of her home? Rocket looked past her, trying to find the opening to some cave for a nest with someone in it. He wanted to press the issue, but at the same time did not want to be rude. It was clear that she was not happy about the idea of being kicked out, so asking further would be rude. He looked down as well, searching for something else to talk about. “Well, which you may not be looking for them… would you like to search for them with me? A dip would be just the ticket to cool off in this horrible weather.” He was starting to sound like his father, but could anyone really blame him, given his so recent complications? He grinned, stepping a hoof into the water. “I promise it will only be a friendly outing. If it help my heart belongs happily to another.” Somehow Rocket felt, whether correct or not, that this mare would like a trip without expectations. He bowed a little, grinning softly. “My name is Rocket. May I ask yours?”

As she considered his offer she looked him over with a critical eye. Doing such things within her herd would have landed her in a great deal of trouble. Out here it seemed to be just the opposite. Here if she did not properly investigate a person she would often find herself needing aid. What a backwards place this was.
When he announced that he was taken that made things easier. Her honor would not be at stake in a trip with him. More importantly he would be safe from the fate that would surely befall him if he were to do anything to her. She cringed inwardly at the thought. Hisoka and Torao did not look like anything dangerous but she knew them better than that and she was well aware of her value to the younger.
"I will go. It may be a decent way to pass the hours." She bowed back to him pleased to see that he had sense enough for manners. "I am called Sabella and I, like yourself, am engaged." Or rather she assumed he was engaged. It was easier to assume that. Then she didn't have to think about love entering the mix. Something like love just served to make things unnecessarily complicated. Her current life was the evidence of that.

Rocket grinned brightly when she accepted his offer. It was so much nicer to spend time with someone else as opposed to on one's own. "I certainly hope so. After all, we never know what we'll run into! We might just end up on some strange adventure." Well, hopefully not, Rocket admitted to himself, glancing down the river. It was far too hot for that. "Or maybe just find ourselves bound in riveting conversation." Which sounded like a much better idea. It was far too hot for an adventure.
At the mention of Sabella's engagement, Rocket nodded. "Congratulations. I hope your fiance is what you hoped he would be."

"Perhaps." She returned smiling politely. The idea of an adventure was not one she really wanted to entertain. Not only would that likely mean danger, and possibly blood, perish the thought, but it would also mean her disappearance. If she vanished she knew there would be a chain reaction. Hisoka would take action, Torao would get violent and without a doubt by the time she either returned home or they found her there would be a bloody trail in their wake. All of this passed through her mind in the span of a second and it only took a moment longer to push it all back. "Conversation would be nice." She agreed.
Once again she offered a polite smile this time directed at his congratulations. Should she tell him? It might not be entirely proper to involve an otherwise perfect stranger in their affairs. In fact, it wasn't proper at all. "He is...everything I expected him to be." It was a true and vague answer. A person would read what they wanted and that suited her just fine. No one needed to know that they were in no way in love. They didn't even really like each other most days. There was tolerance and acceptance but not much actual liking.
"Well, shall we go?"
