Statistics

Name: Vefeniel
Nickname(s): None
Age: 120
Gender: Female
Height: 5'3
Weight: 120
House: None
Stage: Jabbress
Profession: Druid of Eilistraee (or in the eyes of many, a heretic in the worst way)
Personality: Ever mindful of her role in representing her Goddess, Vef is very kind and does her best to put everyone she meets at ease. She has an especially tender spot for children and exploited male drow. As a druid, she is very well-versed in plants and their properties, and uses them for nearly everything from cooking to healing to magic. She lives by herself in a mysterious grove on the surface world, surrounded by carefully tended gardens and mysterious, large blue flowers that are not found anywhere else in the realm. Though she enjoys being by herself, she will gladly offer help to anyone who has need of it and seeks her out. People with ill intentions would do well to note that she does not go about unarmed. She always carries around a staff etched with magical runes, which she uses to summon magical plants to snare and entrap those who would seek to harm her or anyone under her protection.
Likes: Nature and plants, children, animals, singing, caring for others
Dislikes: Abuse, those who only see her as a drow, fire

(Once again winging it on age, height and weight; I am SO bad at that part. XD)

History

Unlike many drow within the realm, Vefeniel was born on the surface world, among a large village of followers of Eilistraee. She had no exposure to the general hardships of her kind, though like any group of surface-dwelling drow, she and hers were subject to the usual prejudices by any others who crossed their paths.

For the most part there was order and balance, and Vefeniel was brought up to be a promising priestess of the Dark Maiden. However she often neglected her studies in order to pursue things that held an interest to her, such as cultivating plants and flowers, and spending time with the village children, teaching them the ways of their Goddess when the other priestesses were too busy to do so. It affected her studies so much that when the time came for her initiation, it was decided by the elders that she was too divided in her ways to be an effective priestess. Because she had spent so much time with the children of her people, she was ordered to be their teacher, showing them the ways of the Goddess along with general instruction on the ways of the wood. Her family was exceedingly disappointed, but Vefeniel was not; she could now spend time with the children she loved and who loved her, and she could teach them what she knew about plants and herbs to boot.

Everything changed when on an outing, her children discovered a grievously injured drow male in the woods near their village. Vefeniel took him to her home to nurse him back to health, enlisting the children for help in picking herbs from her gardens, nourishing fruits from her groves, and showing them the power of healing and prayer. She even formed a bond with her patient, hoping to show him the ways of a kinder Goddess. The drow elders were concerned that the male was a sign of a forthcoming attack from an underground raiding party, but Vefeniel insisted that he not be cast out to die, and that the Goddess had sent him to be healed and saved.

For all of her good intentions, a raiding party of Underdark drow descended upon her village one night, killing everyone down to the last drow child. Vefeniel was thought to be dead along with them, but after enough time had passed for the bodies of the dead to be swallowed up by the earth, she was seen roaming the forests, cloaked in green and carrying a staff etched in runes. The trees around her home, once the same as every other in the forest, had grown wilder and thicker, making a barrier around her house, orchards and gardens that none but the small animals could pass through without her consent. Those welcomed to enter her new sanctuary saw that her gardens flourished, and were dotted here and there with strange new flowers, the petals as blue as a summer evening sky and grouped together to form blossoms the size of a plate. She never speaks of what became of her village, or the drow male she had hoped to save, but she is always willing to lend a hand when someone else is in need of saving, whether it is from a broken bone or a broken spirit; she will do everything in her considerable power to help.

Inventory

Staff- When the Goddess herself ordained Vefeniel to be a druid in her name, she was given the magical insight to fashion herself a staff, inlaid with sacred runes and infused with the power of the earth itself. She uses it mainly as a walking stick when she is out in the forest gathering herbs and communing with nature outside of her grove. Should anyone try to harm her, her staff is a formidable weapon used to conjure up creeping vines, thin and supple for whipping and snaring, and thick and thorn-studded for blocking and defending. It can also raise one Hell of a goose egg.

Satchel- Vefeniel always carries a simple leather satchel with her when she goes into the woods, namely for storing any herbs and seeds she might find, as well as any homemade remedies and ointments she might need.

~A Page of Script.....~

Tomorrow I imagine my life is going to change forever, and I must admit I'm very excited!I was given many gifts to commemorate the occasion, including this wonderful journal, a place where I can put onto paper my discoveries, visions, and spiritual experiences that I might reflect upon, later, when I shall be a seasoned priestess of Eilistraee, the Dark Maiden and the goddess that on the morrow I shall pledge my entire life to. I have at last come of the age where my rigorous studies of the ways and rites of the Dark Maiden is about to come to fruition, and I shall enter the temple as either a priestess or a cleric, whichever the council of Eilistraee should decide. A priestess would mean a closer relationship with the Lady, whom I love with all of my heart, but a cleric's work would sooth my desire to heal and help.

I am excited, but with that excitement comes a measure of sadness. Tomorrow I am to be whisked away to live in the temple with the other servants of the Dark Maiden. I will no longer live here with my parents, helping my mother tend to her garden or entertaining the village children as they stop in. I know it has been noted by High Priestess Erelynda that I have often set my tomes down and diverted my attention to a tousle-haired child who wished to hear a story of our fair Lady of the Dance. I have seen the frowns directed at me from over the fence as I toil away among the flowers and amid piles of dirt, the ancient and precious ritual scrolls laying on a table inside, their collected scripts yet to be pored over. I can't see how I can be at fault that I love tending the wonderful gifts that the surface world has bestowed upon us that we so often take for granted, or that the young children are so eager to learn and flock to me because they know I will give them more than a stern downward look and a vague promise that their questions shall be answered (and hopefully forgotten) in the next day's classes. I will have no more time to take walks along the forest paths, breathing in the scent of flowers and trying to guess at the whispers of the trees. I will not see the village children again, whom I always welcome with a sweet and a story. How I will miss the sound of their laughter! Much as I adore the Dark Maiden and all that she has done for me; allowing me to be born here, far from the troubles of my dark cousins below the ground; it hurts to feel as though I have to choose, to abandon one happiness for the promise of another.

I will try to sleep tonight, for I will need it all tomorrow, but I have a feeling that while my body lays in repose, my mind will be the farthest thing from restful.

~A Wisp of Memory.....~

One, two, three, four......Vefeniel counted the stitches on her boots twice before she heard the clearing of a throat, harsh and loud in the silence of the temple. Looking up, she met the gaze of High Priestess Erelynda. She beheld a drow well into her lifetime, her face still bereft of wrinkles and not a hint of gray in her long, silvery hair. She looked very regal in her priestess robes, the draping of them over her feet gave Vefeniel the impression of a tall pillar, strong and sturdy and made to both impress and intimidate.

The High Priestess on the other hand beheld a young female, her full adulthood not even touched, her slender frame decked in the standard green garb of the villagers. Her hair hung in wisps about her shoulders, and her eyes.....those startling blue eyes were full of kindness and love. It was easy to imagine that they were the caring eyes of the Dark Maiden herself, but as far as the drow female was concerned, the similarities ended there. The eyes were also full of naivete, of unclouded innocence that seemed to overpower any wisdom they might contain, wisdom that ought to have shone forth like a beacon in light of all the studying she was supposed to have done for the past decade to prepare herself for this very day.

She had seen all of the times Vefeniel had put down her books on drow history in favor of tending to plants, put off practicing her cantrips to slip a thrown-together poultice over the scraped knee of one of the village children, taken 'breaks' from memorizing rituals to take long walks in the woods surrounding the village, where she would return well after sunset and carry herself straight on to sleep. She sighed inwardly as she looked down at what she saw, her eyes darting farther back, to the corner of the temple where her parents stood waiting, their faces shining with pride and happiness. She returned her gaze to the drow standing before her, and sighed quietly again, feeling rather than hearing the whispers of robes behind her. She had all but forgotten the other priestesses and clerics who had gathered there to witness the orientation of the newcomer into their ranks. Was this really the right thing for her, for Eilistraee? She did not doubt Vefeniel's desire to be of service to the Dark Maiden, but was she really up to the task of shutting herself away for several more decades, immersing herself in the tomes which she had so neglected before?

Vefeniel did not miss the conflicted look on the High Priestess' face, and she felt her entire body tense. What she would have given to hear the elders' thoughts right now! She saw Erelynda's eyes close, a sign that she was about to speak, and she used the opportunity to fidget, her leather boots scuffing the floor with to her was an earsplitting creak.

The eyes did open, and she willed her gaze only upon the young drow rather than the obviously hopeful parents. "Vefeniel.....I have watched you grow into a beautiful young female, a credit to our race and a promising vessel to spread the word of our fair Goddess. However.....I have begun to see something else within you; not necessarily a bad thing, but something that I fear would only hinder your inner growth in the world of a priestess. You have much to offer, but your heart remains with the earth rather than among the stars. I therefore believe I am doing the right thing when I tell you that you are not to become a priestess or a cleric of Eilistraee." She could sense the uproar getting ready to burst like a rapid wash of water upon a dam, and she held up her hand to stem it. "Instead you are to remain in the village, among your herbs and flowers. And since the village children seem to only wish to ask questions of you...." she allowed a small upward turn of her mouth at this, "You are appointed to teach the children the ways of our Goddess. Teach them about the forest, about Eilistraee, and our world in which everything has it's place." In one fluid motion, the High Priestess turned to the rest of the clergy. "My sisters, do you concur?" A murmur of approval sounded from the stunned group of drow, and Erelynda wasted no time in turning back to Vefeniel; already she could see the young girl's parents approaching the altar with argumentative looks. "This is not a light responsibility; see to it that you use that fervor I have at times had the privilege to witness from you."

It wasn't until High Priestess Erelynda had turned to Vefeniel's parents, who were already pleading to her to reconsider her decision, that the entirety of her situation had sunk in. She was not to be locked away in the temple, to read tome after dusty tome and be let out only at night when the flowers had gone to sleep. She would be allowed to remain in the village, communing with nature, and what's more, she was permitted to teach her findings and observations to all of the children! Even if Vefeniel could find the words to express her happiness and gratitude, they would have been drowned out by the protests of her parents as they continued to beseech the council even as they were turning to file one by one out of the room.
