"Thank you! Your Pokemon are fighting fit! We hope to see you again!"
Vic smiled at the pinked haired woman behind the counter. His Pokemon were getting along fine anyway, but after a battle with some guy who used only fire types, he felt that they needed some R&R. They had done well, and despite being fairly evenly matched, he had won the battle.
What had been the guy's name? Argon? Agro? Something like that. Victor couldn't believe the man's audacity. After openly proclaiming the superiority of fire type Pokemon, he arrogantly challenged all comers, blithering something about just catching a really rare Pokemon. While the Cyndaquil he sent into battle was certainly a very rare Pokemon, it obviously had no battle training.
His Vulpix and Ponyta had been a bit more of a challenge, even managing to beat his Houndour and Deino, however after being weakened in the prior battle, neither had the strength left to pose much of a challenge to Vic's Absol Abaddon, his partner and best friend.
"Oh, by the way, I'm going to need a bed for the night. Are there any open?"
"Sure, room 4 is completely empty. You're welcome to take one of those five beds."
Vic nodded and smiled again, before releasing Abaddon from his ball. With a pat on Abaddon's head, he turned and headed towards the room. It was getting late, and he needed to get to bed fairly soon.

Grant couldn't believe his luck. After traveling from Johto to Kanto with nothing but a Larvitar, he'd managed to catch a Zubat in the Viridian Forest, as well as a Joltik on the route before the Indigo Plateau. Both of those Pokémon were hard to find in those places, and he felt privileged to have even seen them, let alone catch them. He had a huge smile on his face as he walked past a large crowd on his way to the Pokémon Center. I wonder what this is about, he thought, looking into the crowd.
He felt a tap on his shoulder as he tried and failed to look over the shoulders of taller people in front of him, and he turned to face the tapper. It was an elderly man in a brown fedora with a matching suit and a black cane. He was wearing sunglasses, even though it was nearing nighttime. "Hello, young man," he said, smiling at Grant. "Are you interested in this crowd?"
Grant looked back at the crowd, still wondering what was going on in the middle of it. "Yes, sir, I am," he answered respectfully. "Do you happen to know what's going on?"
"Why, it's a Pokémon battle," the old man answered. "Apparently, one young man such as yourself was boasting about his Fire Pokémon, even ranting about how he had a rare one, and some other young man came to knock him down a couple pegs. But battles were back when I was your age," he added, looking off in the distance as if seeing himself as a younger man full of youth and life. "Now all I have is this egg," he said, pulling a small blue egg with a black stripe near the top out of his bag that Grant hadn't noticed he was carrying. "Unfortunately, it won't hatch for me. I think it's special." He looked at Grant over the rim of his glasses. "Maybe you'll try?" He held out the egg for Grant to touch.
Grant was confused. An egg? So quickly? This was rare itself. Nevertheless, the oddity of the situation didn't stop Grant from reaching out and touching the egg, not even reacting when it gave a small shake. "I knew you were special," the man laughed. "Here, do us both a favor and take this egg from me. It seems happier with you." And before Grant could even respond, the old man had hobbled away.
Amazing, thought Grant. Only a couple days into my journey and I already have three strong Pokémon and an egg. Who knows how this journey will end up? Maybe I really can be the Pokémon Champion of the world...
And with that, he made his way to the Pokémon Center, carrying the egg in his arms the entire way. When he entered, he saw a young woman working behind the counter. She was wearing a nurse's outfit and had bright pink hair that ended in odd curls. This was a Nurse Joy. Grant knew that, seeing as there were plenty of Joys back in Johto.
"Hello, Nurse Joy," he said. "I'd like to rest my Pokémon, please.""That'll be no problem," Joy said with a smile as she accepted Grant's three Pokéballs and put them on her machine. A flash and couple of dings, and Grant's Pokémon were being returned to him. "We hope to see you again!" Joy said."Actually," Grant said, scratching the top of his head, embarrassed, "I know I'm a bit late, but do you have any open rooms for the night? It's getting late, and I'm going to be taking on this town's gym leader tomorrow.""Oh, sure," Joy said. "There's one room open, as long as you don't mind rooming with someone that is. He just came here recently.""Well, if it's the only room left, I guess it'll be okay," Grant said. "Thank you, Nurse Joy!" And he made his way to the room.

Genesis Mennett ran into the Pokémon Center, gasping for breath. She had finally gotten away from home, only to find herself completely lost in the Viridian Forest. And, even worse, she had been surrounded by bugs. She was so frightened of bugs, even more so than ghosts, which made her skin crawl at just the thought. Even though Beetleborg, her Heracross, was a Bug type, she found herself not frightened by him. Maybe because she had been raised side-by-side with it all her life. Or maybe because it was also part Fighting type, thus canceling the Bug type. She wasn't sure. All she knew was that she wasn't frightened of him like other bugs. So, staying lost in the forest for a day with bugs, wasn't exactly Genesis's idea of a fun beginning.
She handed her Pokémon to Nurse Joy, who healed them quickly. The former asked if there were any rooms left open, possibly one with a shower for her to cleanse herself of the smell of bugs.
"Well," Joy said, "there is one room left...and it has three beds left out of the five, seeing as two other trainers are staying in there as well... but..."
"Does it have a shower?" Genesis asked. When Joy nodded, she said, "Then I don't mind sharing a room." She grabbed her three Pokéballs from Joy and ran to the room, Joy telling her to wait because of... something Genesis didn't have the patience to listen to.
She realized as she walked into the room, that the two trainers Nurse Joy had told her about were both male.

"Sorrel," Professor Oak had told her the day before, "I'm trusting you with this Eevee and Ralts. I'm trusting you as a Pokémon trainer and researcher." He handed two Pokéballs, as well as Dexter the Pokédex, to Sorrel. "Don't let me down," he added, patting her head and sending her on her way.
"Don't worry, Professor," Sorrel Prentice said, stroking Eon, her Eevee's, fur and playing "Keep-Away" from Emmy, her Ralts, with a flashlight from Dexter, "I won't let you down. I will learn all I can about Pokémon, and make you proud!"
She walked into the Pokémon Center and handed over her Pokémon after putting them back into their respective Pokéballs. As Nurse Joy healed the two starters, a man walked up to Sorrel. He was an elderly man in a brown fedora with a matching suit and a black cane. He was wearing sunglasses, even though it was nighttime outside, and they were inside anyway.
"Hello, young lady," he said, smiling at Sorrel. "Those are some unusual starting Pokémon from a beginner from Kanto. Mind telling me how you got them?"
Sorrel stared at this man, who, with a bent back, was eye level with her. Not that she could see his eyes anyway. "Well, sir, not that it's any of your business, I got them from Professor Oak of Pallet Town. You see, I'm his apprentice, so he gave me rare Pokémon, hoping I could study them and learn from them."
The old man nodded, and even though Sorrel couldn't see his eyes, she felt as if he was constantly staring at her. "I see, so you got them for study. Well, then let me help you out even more." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a Pokéball, still small, as it hadn't been unlocked yet. "This, too, is a rare Pokémon, and I believe it will be exactly the type you'll be looking for, too." He placed the ball in her hand and unlocked it. The Pokéball grew about twice its size in seconds. "I trust we'll meet again, someday." And with that, he left the center.
"Wait!" she cried. I can't just take a Pokémon from a stranger... she thought. She looked at the Pokéball. I want to know what's in it. But that could end badly... but it is for research, and that man didn't seem too weird.
Her curiosity got the better of her, so she dropped the Pokéball, which popped open in a flash of light, revealing a floating blue Pokémon with a claw-like attachment on its head, and a singular red eye, which it closed happily. "Beldum!" it cried.
"A Beldum!" Sorrel cried, grabbing it and hugging it. That's odd, she thought, never once letting her new Pokémon go. How did he know I liked Psychic types? She wasn't too worried about it right now, so she returned Levi, her new Beldum's nickname, back to it's ball, just as Nurse Joy returned with her other Pokémon. "Thank you, Nurse," she said, bowing gratefully. "Um, do you, by chance, have any spare rooms for the night?"
"Well, yes, but that room is being shared with three people already," Nurse Joy explained. "There are two more free beds in that room. And it is our only room left." She shrugged. "And one of the other occupants is a girl as well, so it shouldn't be too awkward. Oh, and they're all trainers."
"I'll take it," Sorrel said, thinking that this would be a good time to study other trainers as well as other Pokémon.

It was... peaceful. Yes, that's the word Vic would use to describe the room around him. The walls were painted a drab off-white with light red carpet. No windows adorned the walls, unfortunately. It was a large room, big enough for five separate beds arrayed pointing out from the walls in a semi-circle around the room.
He had chosen the bed furthest to the left to plop down on, with Abaddon following him up onto the mattress without hesitation. Since discovering the Pokemon's disdain for staying in a ball, Victor had allowed his friend to walk free. This tendency had created a slight inconvenience for the two- Vic couldn't fathom the idea of ever making Abaddon sleep on the floor when they weren't camping. It seemed completely unfair. Fortunately, a quick compromise had been made: Abaddon and Victor would share a bed as long as circumstances would allow.
And so it was there that they lay, Abaddon curled up on one side of the bed with his sickle-shaped crest and hanging from the side of the bed snoozing quietly, and Vic sitting with his back propped up against the wall with a lamp on, slowly flipping through the pages of a book he had been reading, his off hand idly pulling through the fur on Abaddon's back.
As the time dragged on, Victor began to wonder if he was going to be the only person in the room that night. If he was, it would be strange. The town seemed to have been bustling with activity that day. His thoughts strayed more and more from the text in front of him as his mind drifted to thoughts about the journey he had undertaken.
Ultimately, his long-term goal was to open up a Ghost and Dark type gym. As it stood, he only had three dark type Pokemon. It would be kind of difficult to have a "Ghost and Dark type gym" without the "Ghost" part, so he had spent the last month or so searching diligently for any Ghost type Pokemon. Needless to say, he had found none. It was becoming increasingly frustrating, considering that he really wasn't even sure where to look. The other types were simple; you want a water type, go swimming. A fire type? Visit a volcano. Leaf or bug types? Just look in the forest. You want a ground type? Dig a bloody hole, and you'll find yourself covered in ground type Pokemon, but Ghosts? What kind of a habitat would ghost type Pokemon frequent?
Victor had no answer for that question, and it was driving him crazy that no one else seemed to either. In the meantime though, he wasn't sure what to do. He knew the immediate goal was to find some ghost types. After that? Who knows? Maybe he would take the league challenge, just to see how far he could get. Maybe it would be a good idea to get better battling some gym leaders so he could establish a name for himself before he tried to open his own gym.
After a while, he realized he had completely lowered his book down to his lap and had been staring off into space. The realization didn't last long however, as his thoughts were quickly dispelled when Abaddon jerked his head up towards the door to the room as it opened.

Grant walked in and found another man a bit older than himself sitting on one of the beds with an Absol. He looked deep in thought, even though a book was resting on his chest, so Grant figured he was thinking about the book. Maybe something confusing had just happened and now the man was trying to figure it out. He shrugged as the man finally looked at him. "Oh, um, sorry about just walking in, but Nurse Joy said that this room was free. Well, freeish. She did mention that you'd be in here, but I don't mind if you don't," Grant said, speaking normally. While waiting for an answer, he looked at the Absol. It seemed to be pondering the new human, unsure of whether he was a threat to his owner or not. After a bit, he seemed to not care much and laid his head down again. "That's a nice Absol you have there," Grant said, making small talk. "It's obviously very attached to you." Genesis came in just in time to hear one of the boys, the younger of the two, say that the other boy's, the older one, Absol was obviously well trained. "Oh, um," she said, making the younger boy jump and turn to face her. "Oh, I'm sorry!" she cried. "I didn't mean to scare you! My name's Genesis. I heard this room was free. Well, Nurse Joy said that there were two others in here, but I didn't stick around long enough for her to tell me they were both guys." She looked down at her shoes and tapped against the ground for a bit, then said, "Um, I can leave..." Sorrel bumped into the girl without meaning to as she entered the room. "Oh, well, not a great way to meet one of my roommates for the night," she said, apologizing in her own way to the girl as she took a look around the room. Obviously the girl and one of the boys, the younger one, hadn't been here too long, as both were holding their bags still. The other boy, the older one, however, seemed to have been here long enough to get a bit comfortable. His boots were off, and he was laying on the bed with his back against the wall with a book on his chest, and he seemed to have a combination of confusion and amusement on his face. Well, this seems like an amazing niche of trainers already, she thought, then noticed the Absol.
"A Pokémon!" she cried, pulling out the Pokédex that Professor Oak had entrusted her with."Absol," Dexter the Pokédex said, "the Disaster Pokémon. Absol live in steep mountainous regions, and rarely venture down into areas inhabited by humans, but should an Absol be seen by humans, it is said that catastrophe is soon to follow.""Um, well," she said, closing Dexter and stowing him in her bag again. "That doesn't sound very pleasant. But, um, hey, who am I to judge?! I'm sure that your Absol is a great Pokémon!"

Vic smirked wryly at the newcomer. The guy seemed decent at first glance, but he opened his conversation with an immediate apology. That would be a fun aspect of the him to explore. He also wore his hair in a slightly spiked fashion, something that Vic himself had once done back when he was much younger, before he had grown his hair out. In his later years, he had categorized the haircut as tending to belong to douchebags, though not without exception. He had a very prettyboy look about him as well as-
Vic caught himself making snap judgements again. It was one of the many habits he kept telling himself he would probably work on changing eventually. Maybe.
" 's fine, man. Take a bed. And yeah, Abbadon's my bro. Never had a better friend."
He hardly had time to pat Abaddon on the back before the guy jumped and spun around, revealing a very... pretty, if colorful girl standing in the doorway. The most obvious trait that marked her as unusual was her blue hair. She obviously spent a lot of effort on making herself look different. But the colors... she was definitely abnormal. Which made her a bit more interesting than your average girl walking down the street. She was difficult to pin to any one stereotype, and that was something that subconsciously bothered Victor. Snap judgements and stereotyping were both something that Vic knew he really shouldn't do, but it bothered him to no end when he wasn't able to.
"You're welcome to stay. I wasn't planning on doing anything inappropriate. As long as my friend... whatever his name is feels the same way, "he said, gesturing to the newcomer, "it shouldn't really matter if you're a girl."
He didn't really have time to assuage Abaddon's concerns regarding the girls blue hair as a second, much younger girl walked right into the back of the first one. He could only smirk harder at the girls so very obvious social inexperience. Her attempt at self-depreciating humor only showcased her attempt to hide what seemed to be awkwardness. If it was even possible, Victor's smirk grew even more as he heard the Pokedex's description of his Absol. However, he found a bit of fondness for her when she responded to the description in such an open minded way.
"Y'know, that isn't quite right. Yeah, he's totally awesome. So awesome in fact, that he would warn people about a coming disaster if one were impending. People misinterpret that as the Absol bringing the catastrophe, because people are quick to throw blame around in times of crisis.
Anyway, what are you guys waiting for? Take a bed. There's plenty to go around." Argyle was positively livid. He had only wanted to show of his new Cyndaquil. Sure, he had been bragging and perhaps he had even crossed the line a few times, but that long-haired guy had completely overreacted. There had been no need to take that battle so seriously.
"Whatever. He only had dark types. He was probably a freak anyway..." Argyle muttered to himself. He knew he was making an unfair judgement, but he was angry, dammit! That Absol of his clearly had more training than either the Houndour or Deino he had used, and using it against a newly caught Cyndaquil just seemed like overkill, and Argyle resented it... even if secretly, he did feel a little guilty for starting it.
He supposed that he had picked the fight, and as a feeling of remorse mingled with the indignation he was fuming over, his anger slowly cooled and died. It had been a stupid thing to fight about, and the more he thought about it, the more he realized that.
Either way, he needed to get to the Pokemon Center. He should have had his Pokemon healed right after the battle, but that other guy had beaten him to it, and the last thing he had wanted to do was follow him in and have another scene erupt inside the Center. That would have ended badly for everyone involved. But he had calmed down, and the more rational part of his mind was back in control.
It was getting late, and it was looking more and more like he was going to have to stay at the Center. He supposed that even if that guy was still there, he would just avoid him. He didn't expect the guy to start anything, and he had enough self control to keep his mouth shut as well, but it was still better to be safe than sorry.
When he arrived at the Center, he quickly had the Nurse heal his Pokemon and he asked for a room for the night. There was only one room available, and even that one only had one bed left out of five, so he quickly accepted the offer and headed toward the room, before the beds could fill up.
