The day was cloudy and dark- but somehow, since it was high summer, the forest managed to find a way to be hot and sticky. Everything seemed to move in slow motion and a blanket of silence descended upon the trees. A storm was coming... and Sara was not very good with storms. Trotting quickly through the underbrush, she peered about, anxiously looking for a cave or grove to huddle down in. In the distance, thunder boomed, making it even more imperative that she would find shelter. Finally, as the ground became rockier near the mountains, she spotted a large opening in a cliff-side. With an obvious sigh of relief, the blue-winged hind ran to the entrance of the cave and sniffed the inside to make sure it wasn't occupied. Deducing it was empty, she stepped inside cautiously and curled up near the entrance, too frightened to go any further in.

Deep swirling blues crashed into tumultuous gray and vibrant, stormy purples. It could be so many things...anything. Most would simply refer to the phenomenon as a oncoming storm...but not Vincent. This was an expression of the world's soul! Could it be anger...melancholy? Was the world distraught? Perhaps it was simply an example of strength to its creatures? His eyes scoured the horizon for the truth as his paintbrush moved over his canvas in practiced yet frantic manner. There was an intensity about this storm that couldn't be captured with slow careful strokes.
It was then that the rumbling clouds opened up to cry. It's tears falling upon the paint and creating strokes of its own. The world was trying to speak to him...and he should listen.
Pausing in his art, he began to watch the painting of the tears and gasped softl. The streaks and trails of the rain revealing what could be nothing else but the fearful form of his sister trembling all alone. Sara. She was never the braze sort...but how could he have ignored her at a time like this?
Snagging the now collaborative piece, Vincent rushed back into the woods and towards the mountains he was certain she had taken cover by. Drenched after his search, Vincent came upon the opening his sister was curled under and smiled gently. "I see the vision of beauty in fear and the world weeps with you. Are you all right Sara?"

Sara hoped no one would find her- she could only imagine how much uglier she looked than usual when she was wet. Covering herself with her wings, Sara tried to imagine happy things when she heard the sound of hooves and her brother's gentle voice. Looking up with watery green eyes, the blue-winged hind whispered, "Oh Vinny... tell it to stop crying... it is just scaring me even more..." The sky then chose that moment to explode with light and sound and Sara yelped, throwing her wings over herself as she hid from the world- as she always did. Shivering and pitiful, she small hind tried to tell herself to be brave... now that Vinny was here, she would be just fine. Everything was always better when he was around.
With a deep breath, she peered through her feathers up at her brother and whispered, "W... will you tell me w... what you see?" She loved how he saw what others didn't... it was the same as how she saw people on the inside. But Vinny saw even more- where most herla saw one path, he saw twenty paths and singing tree... well, that was the best way Sara could put it.

"Oh Sara..." He sighed gently and walked over to her as she hid behind her gorgeous feathers. He could never see why she felt the need to hide away. He loved looking at her. All he saw was brilliance and beauty in so many forms. Nothing the likes of her vibrancy should ever be this scared.
Using his own wing to add to her fort of comfort and security, he looked out towards the tumultuous clouds more. If speaking his visions would please her than he see everything for her.
"The sky is not a battle ground, despite the colors and voluminous shapes colliding and knocking into one another. The deep shades of gray and purple are no more forceful and wrathful than your own demeanor. I had once seen them as angry but now..." Vincent closed his eyes and tipped his head up towards the rumbling unknown above. "...now I see that I was not listening to her before. Look up at her Sara. The lady of sky morns."
As a strike of lightning lit up the sky, The plethora of grey and purple tones shaded the shapeless clouds into a voluptuous Herla strewn out as if on a bed of leaves. Her head upon her feet and hair billowing out. Wing curled about her. In fact...if not for flowing long hair and a few difference...it could have Sara's likeness. "She cries, Sara...she cries because she feels the pain and uncertainty of the beauty she placed on this earth. Her tears claimed my painting and spoke to me..."

Sara couldn't help but lean into her brother for comfort as he lay down next to her, giving a small hiccup of a chuckle when he added his own wing to her fort. His wings were so amazing... able to make art the way they were. Sara was never jealous of her brother, only proud. Yes, proud that he was so handsome, kind, and creative- she was glad her mother had gotten at least one worthy child. So, she listened intently as he told her the story he saw in the sky. A beautiful lady... she was crying? That was so sad... So wrapped up in the story Sara became that she couldn't help but peek out from between her feathers and look up at the sky as Vinny told her to.
Watching the clouds, she barely flinched the next time lightening lit up the sky, because Sara was trying desperately to see what her brother saw. Perhaps she didn't actually see it, but so badly did she want to that her mind created the image before her eyes as she whispered, "I... I see her Vinny... it is so beautiful, and so sad..." A single tear then rolled down Sara's cheek, but this time it was not for herself, but for the unknown hind of the sky who felt so much sadness. "Perhaps she wants to see more of your art... you should paint for her!" was the blue-winged hind's small exclamation as she tried to think of ways to make the sky happy again.

Vincent opened his eyes and looked back down to his sister peering ever so precariously through her feathers. Smiling softly, he wondered if Sara simply refused to see how his story was relating to her or that if she simply got so lost in the story that it took her own problems away. Regardless...her good nature was hard to refuse. "Shall I paint for her Sara? "
He nudged her with his nose a bit and chuckled. "What should I paint? Something of beauty to her mourning soul? Could I paint you?"

Sara continued to watch the sky, hoping it would stop crying soon. At Vincent's inquiry, she nodded vehemently and replied with earnest, "Oh yes, Vinny... you should paint for her. I think she would like that." Listening to him further she blinked in surprise and shrunk back down under her wings. "Paint m... m... me? I know y... you can make j... just about anything b... beautiful, Vinny, but I think th... that's pushing it." Had the hind in the sky asked him to paint her? If so... why? Perhaps the beautiful hind in the sky didn't feel beautiful any more... maybe the mysterious hind needed to see something ugly to make herself feel better- not that Sara could blame her for wanting to feel beautiful... and not that anything her brother ever painted could turn out ugly. It seemed like a silly idea all around.

Vincent forced himself to retain his gentle smile as Sara retreated back into her world of solitude and hiding places. He would always smile for her. The gentle look having a simple calming effect for her. She was always so shrouded in her own negativity that he made it a quest to break it down little by little and let her true beauty shine.
Nuzzling her wings he chuckled softly and shook his head as he began to pull out his painting supplies once more. "Sara...do you forget that beauty is not what it seems. Appearance is merely that, a veil that ensconces our true essence. One has to look beyond the veil to envision one's soul. Your soul...as the noble lady seems to think...is beyond the simple word of beauty and can be the only thing to relieve her woes."
Looking at his supplies, he decided upon a watercolor...a watercolor upon the rock face. There was more than enough rain for the moisture needed and this way, the lady could help if she so chose to speak through his art once more.
There was no need to ask Sara to pose. He painted what was...not what he had constructed. His wings moved to the sound of the thunder and lightning above. Once again utilizing the storms...the lady's great spirit to guide him. Wide streaks of gently blue began to cover the rocks. Subsequent strokes revealed the streaks to be feathers...and the feathers wings. The two intertwined to reveal only what Sara wished. Her two eyes peeking shyly through the middle.
As he worked, the sky seemed to become reticent. As if the lady were watching and mulling over her own tribulations. The painting was beautiful...feathers falling here or there with a look in her eyes that simply couldn't be described in words. Many might say it was melancholy. Some...a secret. Time would only tell what they spoke of...time Vincent wished could move with great haste.
"I...I think its done..." even as he spoke, the last few droplets of rain added their detail to the intricate wings before a beam of sunlight light broke through the willful clouds to reveal his work of truth. He smiled at it sadly before wiping his brow and turning to his sister. "What do you think?"

Sara smiled minutely back up at her brother- nothing made her feel safer than knowing he was there to protect her. Giggling quietly she replied, "Oh yes Vinny, I know that. I worked very hard to at least be beautiful on the inside. I would love to see you paint my soul... I hope it is pretty... I try so very hard to make it so."
With a wistful sigh, she settled down quietly and watched her brother paint. It was mesmerizing. The colors, the strokes, how he some how managed to make something appear from nothing. With great intensity did she observe the gentle creation of wings and eyes, of an entire story written in a single picture. As he finished, Sara half wished it would never end.
Blinking away tears she had not noticed were there, Sara whispered in awe, "Th... that's me? O... on the inside...? It... I... I'm beautiful." Then, the sun broke through and she looked up at the sky with a slightly fearful giggle, "You awe me, brother. No one is more beautiful on the inside than you... you can even make the sky stop crying."

He sighed gently as she tried to add a modifier to the simple statement of, "I'm beautiful." Closing his eyes, Vincent let his wings lightly brush over the image he had created as if he could feel her true confidence locked away inside it somehow. Perhaps it waited there. Waited for the right being to truly unlock her heart before she could accept what she was. He had to admit, it pained him a little that he wasn't the one...but his soft smile never wavered.
"Yes...,"Face still turned to the now tranquil gathering of clouds, he chuckled softly and let his eyes open to view them as the lady willed. Her form now gentle and at peace...even if she still was a bit puffy around the edges. Crying tended to do that you know. "Yes you are Sara...and not simply on the inside...for the you I painted is the only one that exists. You simply are. No modifiers exist in my truth...and I hope you're right...about the lady in the sky I mean." He looked at her now with a truly odd expression. A little nervous...perhaps excited. "I truly wish the lady is at peace...and if I was a service to her...then may I always be so."

Sara tilted her head curiously, he ears swiveling back and forth as she pondered her brother's words. Comprehending that she had grown from an ugly, teased fawn into a beautiful hind would take time... perhaps more time than they had in this mortal realm, but time was needed nonetheless. Her brow furrowed slightly in thought, trying to figure out what her enigmatic sibling was trying to say. Thinking back on the few other herla who had told her she was beautiful, and how Vinny always painted what was really there rather than was everyone else saw, she came to a conclusion that perhaps others could see the beauty she kept inside as well. But this conclusion happened silently. Sara didn't wish to argue with her brother over her beauty or ugliness anymore- it seemed to be the only thing anyone ever wanted to talk about.
Blinking at her brother's new expression she replied slowly, thinking about each statement before she made it, "Well... if there truly is a lady in the sky, she must be a very tumultuous hind. After all- she changes so often. But, perhaps she does not wish to always be at peace. You know, some herla find peace to be boring. I am sure regardless of her reaction to your art, that you hold her attention and adoration as tightly as you do mine." Smiling softly, she rose to her hooves gracefully and placed a soft kiss on Vinny's cheek. "Can we go for a walk? I bet the creek or the meadow near by are wondrous after the rain."

For a moment, there was absolute confusion on Vincent's face. His sisters words about a walk going almost unnoticed as he focused solely on the fact that she told him he was wrong. Wrong about the lady in the sky. No...No that couldn't be. Didn't all hinds wish for peace? What if he offended the lady by wishing it so. That...that was not acceptable. "So you...I mean females... they ... you don't desire peace? Is wishing peace upon the lady bad? Should I not? I thought all ladies wished for peace but...if I'm wrong then...oh she doesn't seem mad but its so hard to tell with women..."
He began to pace a bit as he digressed into rambling thoughts. The hart not daring to look up at the sky in case it met him with an offense.

Sara had begun to walk out of the cave, gazing curiously at the grass as it glistened in the sun after the rain. She was in mid-step when her brother began to speak, in a strange halting fashion that she had never heard from him before. It was so reminiscent of her friend Seato that she froze in her tracks and looked back at him with perplexity written on her face. Blinking as she pondered on his speech she shook her head slowly, speaking in a hurried and slightly panicked fashion,"Oh no... dear brother I desire nothing more than I desire peace. I simply said that to relieve any pressure you may have felt in concern to your art... You know I hate to pressure people. I just wanted you to know that if there comes a time when your painting does not make the hind in the sky stop crying, that it is not because she didn't like your painting, it.... wait..."
Sara stopped her flow of words as something dawned on her... what a strange way he worded his thoughts! It's almost as if he has me... Her thoughts trailed off into words. "V... Vinny? Have you met the hind in the sky?!" she asked, slightly fearful of this new-found power her brother possessed. Could he speak to the goddess of the sky?!

Vincent flushed as deeply as one could, his wings ruffling as before he pulled them close to his body for comfort. "To speak! Oh to speak dear Sarah! That would be...it would be..." Almost breathless...he suddenly felt terrified and looked to her as if he had done something terribly wrong. "Sarah I have no idea how to speak with women...much less the lady of the sky! I...she speaks to me...I know she does but...I have no idea if I can reach her. I try...I speak to her every day but I don't think she can hear me. Now I almost wish I haven't. What if I offended her?"

Sara whimpered a little and fought very hard to keep from falling to the ground and covering herself with her wings again. She had to be strong for Vinny, the way he always was for her. "Oh... oh dear..." she murmured and stepped forward to press her nose against her bother's cheek, "Shhh... now now... what is all this fuss about? You speak perfectly fine with me and... in case you haven't noticed, I am a female." With a small smile, she licked Vinny's cheek and wrapped her wings around him in a close embrace, "Any woman would be flattered and honored that you are trying so hard to talk to her... how ever could anyone find that offensive? Honestly, Vinny... you've never been this silly before." It was as it always was- when Sara encountered someone weaker or in greater need than herself, she immediately switched from scared and meek to comforting and motherly. Even though she really didn't understand a word of what her brother was babbling about, she went along because she knew he would explain eventually.
