Yggdrasil trudged through the woods, foot steps heavy with exhaustion and the weight from the tree on his back. He was glad for the shade that tree tops provided, but he wished he was out of the woods already. With a sigh and a yawn, he paused, stretching his back for a moment. Perhaps it was time for a short rest and something to eat.
Spotting a larger tree ahead, he walked for a few minutes before reaching it and flopping to the ground, leaning against it. With the sudden movement, the ripe fruits from his tree came loose, landing on the ground and rolling a few inches away from him. He dipped his head, taking the closest one in his mouth, the juices flowing down his chin. It satisfied both his hunger and his thirst and he gave a sigh of happiness.

Lament moved through the forests, the sweat slicking her back as she moved along. The rope swayed above her head and she could hear the creaking of it as she moved---the sound reminded her of something her memory was trying to warn her wasn't good. It wasn't supposed to be pleasant, but the sound of the rope swinging and the almost loud sound of heavy weight creaking...It terrified her and compelled her. Why could she just not remember? But things were never that simple. She moved through an meadow toward a low hanging tree. The fruit hanging from it look refreshing, but she stopped mid-stride as she focused on it. It wasn't just any tree...it was someone like her, someone'who's tree was full of life and fruit. So well, not like her but similiar. They too bore a burden that others did not. Why? Did he know? Were their stories intertwined somehow?

Yggdrasil heard the footsteps before he saw the mare. He wiped the juice from his face and stared in the direction the sound came from. A mare soon appeared, moving slowly and heavily. It took him a few moments to realise why she was moving like she was. On her back she bore a tree, much like he did, but hers was different. His was life hers was.. He swallowed. Was this danger?
He noticed the look in her eyes as they crossed his tree. Hunger.. longing. Oh! Leaning forward, he nudged one of the fruits that had fallen, rolling it towards her. "They're quite delicious, if you'd like to try it." He leaned down and ate another, showing that it wasn't poisonous.

The blood seeped from her eyes as she assessed him. Was that fear that glinted there for a moment? She went heavily down to her knees and studied him for a moment as he looked at her. She watched as the fruit rolled toward her, and she considered. Her mouth was dry--her stomach ravenous. She could feel the saliva starting in her mouth just at the sight of it.
Gently she took a bite, and the luxiours wetness flooded her mouth. She had come from the desert and all of her body felt of sand and death and decay--not that that was unusual really. She was always barren, always leafless. There was no moisture there, no warmth or flowers or anything unlike this stallion whose tree seemed to produce life rather than death.
Her lips sucked the moisture from the fruit before she spoke, her voice husky from disuse. "Thank you," her eyes streamed more blood as she looked at him. "You are like me. How is that?"
She could not recall having met one of her kind...maybe she hadn't or maybe it was int he fog of her memory that was still vacant.
"Where do we come from?"

Yggdrasil watched the mare carefully. He noticed the blood dripping from her eyes, but didn't stare long enough for her to notice. He knew what it was like to be different and he knew this mare would have experienced the same things he did and some much worse. He gave her a light smile as she ate and rolled around towards her.
Like her? Oh, the tree. He didn't believe there was any connection between the two; it was mere coincidence. That didn't mean there wasn't something they had in common; after all, those who bore trees were a rare sight indeed.
"I don't know. I've been this way for as long as I can remember. There are more that I've seen. Two others; a female and a stallion."

Some vague half-memory floated around in her mind as he spoke. It was like someone striving toward treasure at the bottom of the ocean, but their breath would not last long enough to reach it no matter how many times they tried. She woudl try over and over again to push herself further to finally grab the treasure on the ocean floor, but each time she surfaced with the pain of exertion and left with nothing still.
The familiar feeling washed over her, and she heaved a great sigh. Her body was tired as she sucked on the fruit some more. "I did not know there were others, and yet...I feel as if I did know." She wrinkled her brow, slightly confused.
She could never explain the oxymorons of her mind, why she both remembered things and did not remember them. You could not do both, you simply could not and yet...she did very much so.
"Do you think there are more?" She paused, "Were you born this way or did you wake up and just come to find yourself as you are? Grown, tired and with a heavy burden?"

Yggdrasil eyed the mare. She became even more curious as their meeting continued. He wondered what her story was. How she came to be the way she is. He was certain it wasn't a pleasant story. No one with eyes that looked as sad as hers did had a pleasant story.
More? Like them? That was a good question. "That I'm aware of? No. But it's possible. I mean if we exist then surely others must." He gave a nod. "I was born this way. It makes it easier to carry the weight, growing up with it."
He shifted his weight. For some reason, whenever he spoke of it, the tree grew heavier. Like it was reminding him it was there. Reminding him of everything. "Is.. is there something troubling you?"

Lament felt the tree on her back sway. "Something troubling me?"
What was not troubling her? She had not been born to this burden, but had earned it in some way herself. It weighed on her, what had she done to deserve this? The memories would never come, and trying to think of it only made her head throb with the pain of it.
Maybe she wasn't supposed to remember. Did she even have a past?
"The past is..." She paused, "It is gone, like the summer with the first touch of frost. Nothing can be remembered of it's warmth. All feels like it was a dream or that it never existed. I was not born this way."
She spoke it calmly and then looked up into his eyes, "Somehow...I earned this burden, this punishment."
How or why she did not know, but she knew without a doubt that she was being punished for something or at least that's the way it felt.

Yggdrasil's mind clicked. So that's what the problem was. She couldn't remember her past.. how she came to be.. It explained so much and yet so little at the same time. He couldn't imagine not knowing anything.. Missing something without knowing what it is you're missing. It would drive him mad, surely. This mare was broken.. but she didn't seem mad to him. She was stronger than she gave herself credit for.
"It's best not to think of it as a burden. I learnt that a long time ago. It will act like a burden if you call it one."
He had long ago accept that the tree was a part of him; something he couldnt get rid of if he tried. Though he supposed it was easier for him to accept it, having known where it came from. It helped that it gave him something in return for carrying around - shelter from the sun and fruit when he was hungry.
A barren tree that was supposed to be a reminder of something you don't remember happening.. He could see how it would be hard to accept.. Hard to not call it a burden.
"Do you have any clues about your past? Anything at all?" Perhaps he had a memory stored away in his mind; a piece of information or a story that he had heard along the way of his travels but hadn't thought anything of it. He hoped, at least, he could over this mare some comfort.

Lament listened to him as he spoke. How could she not think of this as a burden? It was just a dry try with no use at all. She sighed heavily, the burden feeling even more burdensome today.
She hummed a small tune, letting the sound of it carrying her away. She remembered things here and there. Swinging, heavy weight, tears, blood...She repeated all of it to him. "That's all I remember. That's all I know."
It was true. Everything was vague to her. Nothing was concrete. She had been wandering for years. "How does one find their past when they do not remember it? Maybe if I could find that out...that would ease the burden."
