* [SV Method] *
* Breeding for SHINY Pokemon with Instacheck *

THIS OPTION NO LONGER WORKS DUE TO THE DEATH OF INSTACHECK.

Info is left here for referencing, and in hopes that someone will make a new instacheck, or something similar. Other options are still functional.

Alrighty, so you may have noticed a greater abundance of shiny pokemon this gen, and here's one of the reasons why!

Instacheck.
-- Click the text above to be taken to the thread specifically for Instacheck --

Instacheck. is a program you can install on any computer that is both windows 7 or higher in operating system, and that has the ability to broadcast a hotspot- most computers can do this. This program allows you to connect your ds to a hotspot broadcasting from your computer, and by scanning the information traveling over that hotspot, you can see all the details of a pokemon that is either shown to you, or shown by you in a trade. This includes eggs!

What does this mean for you? It means you can see all the stats, moves, nature, gender ability- all the info you need -before- you hatch a pokemon, INCLUDING it's SHINY VALUE, and it's TRAINER's SHINY VALUE!

Okay, so what's a shiny value? A SHINY VALUE is the shiny id number of an egg. More important is the TRAINER SHINY VALUE, which is your personal shiny code. When an eggs SV matched your TSV and you hatch it, it will hatch shiny!

So what's the point of all this?
Easy! Let's say you're working with eevees. We're going to assume you're a capable breeder who's breeding eggs with 4+ivs perfect, and let say you've filled a pc box with them because you want a whole team of shiny evolutions. You use instacheck to get a list of all the SVs from the eggs, post these SVs on Gaia or some other social media site with pokemon trainers, and you wait until you find someone who matches. Trainer Joey comes along, and his TSV matched your egg's SV. You arrange for him to hatch it and send it back to you, and offer him another egg from your clutch, because this is the courteous thing to do. He agrees to hatch it, and sends it back to you once hatched.

You now have a shiny pokemon WITH perfect ivs!

TLDR; Instacheck lets you check the SHINY VALUE of your eggs and your TRAINER SHINY VALUE. If a trainer hatches an egg with a SV that matches their TSV, it will hatch SHINY. You can use the chat sites and forums, such as Gaia, to find trainers who match your egg's SVs and will hatch these pokemon for you.

* [Masuda Method] *
* Breeding for SHINY Pokemon with split nationality pokemon *

User Image

--- SEE THE BREEDING THREAD HERE FOR DETAILS ON BREEDING ---

This is really simple and is almost not worth it's own post. The old school way of breeding for shiny pokemon is to use the MASUDA METHOD. This well known method is simple, you take one pokemon that is one nationality, say French, and you breed it with one that is a different nationality, say, Japanese, and you raise your chances of getting a shiny egg.

Per Bulbapedia: While the standard encounter rate for a Shiny Pokémon (either in the wild or by breeding) is 1/8192, the Masuda method multiplies this rate by 5 (to 5/8192 or about 1/163 cool in Generation IV and by 6 (to 3/4096 or about 1/1365) in Generation V. It occurs whenever Pokémon of differing real-world geographical origin are bred.

This is still, at best, a 1/1,365 chance. If you're going to breed for a shiny, the SV method in the previous post makes a lot more sense, and can be combined with the Masuda Method.

* [Chaining Method] *
* Hunting for SHINY Pokemon in the WILD. *

SHINY CHAINING is a method of catching shiny pokemon in the wild using your POKERADAR! I will sum this up for you here, but below I have also included step by step instructions on a visual guide made by the lovely YELLOWFUR on tumblr. This is the guide that taught me, and has made the most sense from what I've been able to find. I also will post a youtube video where 'Pokeman Academy' breaks it down into a very detailed, 'chaining for dummies'.

A quick summary? Basically you charge your pokeradar, then use a ton of repels while in a 5x5 or greater section of grass. You will also want to have a ton of leppa berries to restore your moves, and a tonnn of pokeballs. The repel makes it so wild pokemon don't break your chain.

All you need to do is use the radar, go into a shaking patch of grass that is more than 3 squares away, kill or catch the pokemon there, then watch closely for the next patch of grass 3 squares away, and repeat. Eventually one of the squares will have sparkles, and this is a shiny. Each pokemon, if done right, will be the same as the first. If you get a different pokemon, your chain has been broken. Eggs hatching in your party, power cycling your game, and a number of other things can break your chain, so be careful! It can take anywhere from 10-100 pokemon in a chain before you find a shiny, but around 40 seems to be the accepted average.

You can also chain the same way with fishing- minus the pokeradar. All you do for this is find a single square of water that is blocked off on three sides. Cast your rod there, and just keep fishing until you get a shiny.
