Ezra Schlehuber

Ezra didn't want to be here. He would rather be home with his games and books, shut in his room ad away from people. But, Sophia convinced him to go on this camping trip with his class. Sometimes his love and tolerance for Sophia was a pest. But, Ezra wasn't going to hike back to civilization. Mostly because he had no idea where they were and how to get back. If he did, he would hike home. But, Ezra got his chance to slip away from the group and did so, taking his bag with him. He hiked about a mile before stopping and sitting at the base of a tree. This would be a good place to just sit. Looking around, the teen opened his bag and pulled out a tablet. He wasn't supposed to have electronics during the trip, but he wouldn't survive if he had to deal with his annoying classmates without a form of stress relief. Turning the tablet on, he opened his The Walking Dead game app to continue playing. He had finished season one yesterday. Now he had to start on season two. "Alright, Clem. Let's see what situations you're going to get into now."

Engill
Engill wiped the sweat from his brow and put down the axe safely. He had plenty of wood now on the pile to last him some time. He could have just used magic rather than sweat and toil but he didn't like to use it as an easy option; it was saved as a last resort, when there was no other option. He preferred to work hard, found some contentment in physical labour. He would relax a while, maybe take a stroll, and then use the wooden lathe he'd built to make another bowl since one had cracked. He stretched his wings wide and flexed his muscles for a moment then tucked the golden feathers in close and headed out for a quiet stroll - he liked to keep an eye on things. Especially at this time of year when humans tended to venture further away from their cities and towns and out into the countryside. He had to check for fires, litter, damaged trees, injured creatures. He sighed and raked a hand through his long pale hair and he walked along. He frowned as an unfamiliar sound caught his acute hearing. It wasn't a natural woodland sound, it didn't belong here. He looked around carefully and spotted the source. A little way off there was a human male youth, sitting down using some human implement that was omitting the faint alien sounds. Making sure to keep his wings tucked in as close to his back as possible he approached the young male. "Please do not use that here" he requested of him in his west-wind voice.

The teen didn't hear or notice the stranger approach him. So, when the male spoke, Ezra nearly jumped out of his skin, dropping the tablet. Of course he'd meet a person out here. Just his luck. He picked up the device and wiped off the screen with his sleeve before pausing the game and looking up at the other. "It's not hurting anyone or anything....Who are you anyway? You know it's inappropriate and...suspicious to approach a stranger's kid, right?"

Engill
"Kid?" Engill looked genuinely puzzled for a moment and then recalled that the term for an immature goat was also now modern slang for a human child. Not inappropriate, they were just as stubborn, he thought. "You do not look like a... kid. In many times and cultures you would be a man now, with a family and a man's work to do." He was what they called a teenager wasn't he? Not a small child. "And yes, that device is causing harm only you're too ignorant and blind to see how. The sounds it emits are disturbing to many of my friends, they have fallen silent and hidden themselves away. And I have every right to approach you when you are so close to my home. A few more...meters?...and you will be trespassing."

Ezra sighed. Why did he have to keep bothering him? The teen put his tablet back in the bag after turning it off. "Even if I did have my own family, I'd still be someone's child. So, your argument isn't very reliable." Not that his parents even knew he existed anymore. So....His argument wasn't very reliable either. Unless Sophia counted as his mother at this point. "...You're not one of those tree-hugging spiritualists, are you? You know what? Never mind....I don't care, and I don't want to know. Next time, feel free to shoot my head off instead of striking up a conversation with me. I'd be much more comfortable."

"Tree hugging spiritualist? I don't know what that is" Engill replied, once more puzzled by modern vocabulary. "My intent was not to regale, I made a polite request, that is all, which you chose to argue against. Please just don't use that thing so close to my house, that's all. It hurts my ears and frightens away the birds." He sighed and shook his head. He turned away, intending on going back home. Then a sudden thought made him pause and look back. "You're all right are you, so far from any human habitat or others of your kind? You're not lost or in any trouble?" He rarely saw one this young alone out here, they were pack animals usually, these teenage humans.

He only argued because he had left the group to get away from people. Being approached by some guy wasn't something he was fond. Ezra held his knees to his chest and looked forward, now completely bored. He was relieved when the guy turned to walk away, and groaned when he spoke again. "No, I'm not lost. I wish I was. Just for a few days, until it's time to go home. And, no. I'm not in any trouble....Yet. Once the instructors finds me, I will be." He sighed and looked away. "Thanks for bothering enough to even ask. I'm going back to camp before they start looking for me." Ezra stood and picked up his bag before turning and walking away.

At around midnight, he thought, Ezra gave up and admitted he was lost. Horribly. He had no idea how he had gotten so losf; he walked straight after leaving the camp. It should have been a straight beeline to get back. But, apparently it wasn't. Now he was sitting against a tree again, knees to his chest. Maybe one of the councellors would find him. Or, someone from another camp. Or, a ranger. Right now, he'd settle for a group of stoners if they could get him somewhere with a warm fire. The teen sighed before looking ahead. He saw a doe and a fawn in the near distance, and just watched them. Why did he let Sophia talk him into this? No. I left camp. I won't blame Sophia for me getting lost.

Ray was a mix of emotions right now. He was angry, annoyed, and extremely worried. He'd never lost a student before, and it was just a disaster it was this particular student. How did no one notice Ezra slipped away? Ray came across a cabin and sighed. He didn't want to disturb anyone this late at night, especially a forest dweller since they tended to get irritable, but he had to find his student. Walking up to the cabin and turning the flashlight off, Ray gave the door three definite knocks. He hoped this guy had seen Ezra, or that Ezra was being stupid and sitting on this person's couch.

Engill
Assured the young human was in no trouble and about to return to his group, Engill turned away and continued with his stroll and gave the boy no more thought. He did as he'd intended - surreptitiously checked out the places where humans hung out at this time of year to make sure there was no damage and no hurt creatures. There was one rabbit to heal, he'd cut his paw on a discarded broken bottle. It made Engill feel furious. Having made sure everything in the forest was well, he headed home. He spent most of the afternoon using his lathe, making a bowl and a plate and a new leg for one of the chairs. He had a good supper of hedgerow stew and elderflower tea before heading for bed.

At around midnight he was roused by knocking on the front door. He sat up and listened. For a moment he wondered if he'd dreamed it. No one ever came to the cabin, let alone in the dead of night. There had to be something very wrong for someone to do so. He headed for the door and opened it. "What is wrong?" he asked the human male who stood on his threshold, Engill barefooted and wearing just homespun linen underwear.

Ray stiffened when the cabin's owner answered the door, and he looked away, clearly uncomfortable and embarrassed. He held up Ezra's photo. "Have you, uh....Have you seen my student? He's been missing since this afternoon and I can't find him."

Engill looked at the picture and nodded. "Yes, I saw this boy earlier today, not far from the cabin" he told him. "I asked if he was lost and he said no, he said he was about to go back to his camp." So the young human had never made it back to camp? It was a large forest, parts of it very dense and there were some dangers such as small sink holes and falling timber, not to mention the roaming less desirable humans who would do their own kind harm. He sighed. "I know this forest well. I will find him" he told the man. He could use magic to follow his trail and find his easily enough.

Ray wasn't sure about leaving Ezra's safety to a stranger. He didn't know this man; he could easily be a pervert. He didn't seem like it. Ray could see he had told the truth and he sounded sincere. Plus, he had to keep looking. "...You better not hurt Ezra. If you do, you'll have police all over this lot."

Engill
Engill looked at the human and raised a brow. He was not used to being mistrusted, particularly by a mere human. He was tired and a little irritable so not really thinking straight when he decided to do what he did next. He stretched out his golden wings and allowed his glimmer to shine. "Your police are no threat to me, one wave of the hand and I'd sweep them away like flies. I have no intention of hurting anyone. If I had wanted to hurt the human boy I'd have done so when I saw him earlier in the day when no one knew we were together, not now with you as witness. I just want to be in my bed asleep." With a tired and irritated sigh he strolled away from the cabin and into the forest. He went straight to where he'd seen Ezra that afternoon. He muttered some words under his breath and moved his hand over the ground. A silvery trail appeared, showing the boy's path, and Engill followed it.

Ezra was pretty much curled up now, and he was completely still. The doe and fawn had wandered closer to him, and the teen didn't want to spook them. This was the closest he had ever been to a deer, much less a mother and fawn. He felt...oddly honored. He sat like thatfor while until he heard a twig snap, which made the two deer run off. "Wait, no--!" He sighed and slumped. Well, that sucked. The teen looked over and saw it was the guy from before. There was a sort of shine to him, but Ezra wrote that off as his mind playing tricks on him. The wings? Well....Ezra wore weird things, too, sometimes. Mostly for the drama club. He realized the guy had nearly nothing on, and Ezra covered his eyes. Oh, God. This was it. He was going to be skinned by some weirdo in the woods.

[[ Don't have a response for Ray. XD ]]

Engill
Engill had snapped the twig on purpose and silently told the deer to leave so that Ezra would be alerted to his presence. He didn't want to startle him by suddenly appearing silently beside him. He looked down at the young human who he now realised looked scared. He sighed and raked a hand through his hair before bending down and scooping the boy up in strong muscular arms to carry him back to the cabin. "Your pack leader was looking for you. The other humans are worried for you. It was foolish to wander off alone somewhere unfamiliar" he scolded gently. "You will sleep in the cabin tonight and in the morning I shall take you back to your camp."
