did everyone see that commercial about kids that felt like they were a fish out of water that actually showed a fish out of water(a goldfish) -- the nerve -- please tell me that's a really well animated fish!

I'd have to wager it's a real fish.
If I correctly remember the time when this ad was first airing (plus the fact that the video's upload date is from 2010), CG certainly hadn't been at the point where they could have so accurately modeled and animated a fish.
Which makes me wonder, did the filmers of that ad get slapped with any charges for animal cruelty?
Because they certainly should have, poor fish.
