With all the scary curses during Haunted Hallows and all the merry-making and gift-giving of the Winter Solstice, a lot of holidays before and after are forgotten about. And some kids just don't care for Winter Solstice at all! These four freshlings prefer some of the smaller holidays that don't get as much recognition or loathe the bigger festivals. Let's help them dig deep and figure out why.
1: This child prefers New Years! 2. This kid is a wildcard! You get to pick the holiday they prefer, or the one they hate. 3. This kid prefers Thanksgiving! 4. Anti-Yule! This kiddo loathes Yule and anything Winter Solstice related.

When it comes down to it, Yule is a contact sport, and he's not having any of it. The family kisses, the hugs, the warmth and friendly gestures that usually resort to physical contact, it just was never something he liked to deal with. I mean sure, there's food and presents, but at the cost of having your personal space invaded? He'll pass every single time in favor of his solitude and safety bubble of space. Speaking of presents, has anyone ever gotten anything GOOD from them, aside from more clothes that they already have? Maybe a nice new scarf to hide the weak smile of disappointment it wasn't the new ZBox 2000 you had been asking for ahead of time for months. Not to mention those wicked paper cuts you get form accidentally ripping open the paper way too quickly and slicing open your limbs like a festive turkey against an electric carving knife. And on the topic of food, can we mention just how LONG it takes to cook? Who wants to sit around starving for 6 hours waiting for some dumb bird to cook when everything else is already done? Can't we just eat the little things and if we still got room, eat the turkey, or y'know, that weird ham thing some people like to cook too. I just want to eat, not wait for all that mess.
And that's not all! Of course this is the season of cold & the snow, something you figure every child should love right? WRONG! Snow gets into shirts and down shoes and wets socks. And you know what's the most nastiest feeling in the world? You guessed it, wet. socks.
Who wants to go around ruining the perfectly good warmth it took 3 hours and a seat in front of the fireplace to perfect? Definitely not this guy. A moment out in the cold is one moment closer to catching a flu and being bedridden for a week with nothing to eat but lukewarm chicken soup and hoping you can actually find a lump of chicken in the greasy broth and soggy noodles. Served to you by an old lady in her nightgown and slippers because no one else wanted to bother with you after the 2nd day of being ill. Yeah, yikes. Just think, if she falls, we're both done for, and I don't want to go down with this ship over a dumb cold from the dumb weather.
And NO, he doesn't think he complains too much. He thinks everyone else puts up with way too much of the things they don't like for the sake of holidays. Arguments? A thing of the past! Nearly killed Aunt Ginny with a sled last year? Forgiven! Creepy Uncle Wallace? Bring the wife and you're toothless 20-year-old 3-legged poodle that bites anything that moves too fast!
Well NOT for this kiddo, not this year or any year after, please and thanks. No, you know what, not even thanks. Good Riddance when it's over with.

Entry: The holiday that this little one loves is Valentines Day! When the snow is still present on the ground, but the sun is out and about, this lovebug adores seeing couples getting together to celebrate this holiday. Obsessed with seeing how specific types of Nightmares or Daydreams express their feelings of affection to one another. And boy, is there a lot to see when they go out to observe the practices of their favorite holiday.
Look at that bejeweled necklace that Elf just gave to their partner! Oh, oh, over there is a Goblin giving their significant other a soul stone, how unique! Woah, that Chimera totally tackled their companion, haha! There are so many different kinds of creatures who have different sorts of courting methods, some which are bold and obvious, like the Grimm, Chimera or Imps, while others like Geists and Fallen are more subtle. There are even different customs for terms of marriage, like the Bakeneko who always seem to get paired into arranged marriages. Will their love life be able to continue, even if they weren't able to choose their life partner for themselves? This little one wants to find out and doesn't mind snooping around in order to find out their answers.
With a great curiosity plaguing them to find out how love comes to play between races, they're also very interested in the different types of love. There's romantic, which shows up on Valentines Day the most, but there's also platonic love between friends, familial love, or even the love you see of an object, rather than of a person. Not all love is for one person, either, there can be so many people in a relationship, so long as they are all happy!
Determined to find out all about love, this little one has no reservations about going up and staring at couples for the purpose of studying them to answer their questions. It may come across as awkward or uncomfortable to the ones they are observing, what with them making "oooh!" remarks whenever physical displays of love (like hand-holding or kissing) come into play, but in the pursuit of knowledge, this youngster is determined to do what they have to to get their answers!
Maybe, one day when they're older, they'll even be able to try some hands on experiments! They'll buy sweets to give out, they'll dress up in pretty clothing (though their usual cozy, winter outfits are always going to be their favorite) with pinks and reds for the theme and they'll decorate their home decor with hearts! So many hearts! Hearts everywhere! Who knows, maybe they'll even find a partner of their own (or several, if it strikes their fancy) to gush over on their favorite holiday. However, until then, this Freshling is happy to observe from afar and take in all the ways that they could be celebrating this holiday in the future, as well as studying all the varieties of love in the present. (Anyone else sense a future couples counselor or greeting cards writer?) Red rose petals and sappy love letters, here they come!

Chiron didn’t like Yule, no he did not. He detested the cold for certain, and no matter how much he bundled, it seemed to creep right into his bones and settle inside of him, leaving a near-constant shiver up his spine and little puffs of air following him every time he breathed.
He wasn’t fond of Yule decorations or the sheer extent of them when his family and friends went overboard. There was, in fact, such a thing as Too Much, and this seemed to be the one time of year when no one really thought so! They were everywhere, far too bright and far too numerous, and he often found himself squinting and sneering at the shimmering splendor that hypnotized everyone else.
Chiron hated Solstice carols and the carolers who roamed the streets like packs of crazy singing animals, waking everyone up from well-deserved naps in their search of spreading… merriment. He hated the endless food as well, as though no one thought that so much food might be excessive, and other Nightmares might make themselves sick on it!
No, he did not like Yule, not one bit.
In fact, he often found himself making a list of exactly why he hated Yule, from the cold to the decorations to the bundles of clothes, but the one thing that topped that list every single year was the presents. Why did they have to give presents? Never was his detestation of giving so apparent as during the Winter Solstice. Within the holiday, Chiron noticed that there existed an expectation. You gave presents to your friends and family and they did the same, and all was well and happy and bright.
Standing in his bedroom, on top of his bed, gave Chiron a perfect vantage point to peer out of his window to the cold yard below, wet and messy and covered in snow. Within the snow one could make out the shapes of Nightmare boys and girls and their reindeer games. No, Chiron didn’t care for Yule at all, for it seemed to be a holiday to celebrate family and friends, and he had neither at all.
You see, Chiron didn’t really like to make family or friends. He had a friend in his little stuffed doll, and that was perfectly acceptable, and the doll never expected him to have presents at the ready for things like Solstice or Birthdays or any of that foolishness. He was a reliable doll, silent and listening, while Chiron recited his list of reasons to truly hate the season.
If you were to ask Chiron, he would scowl and list all of the reasons he detested Yule and the Winter Solstice, but the true reason and the reason he would hardly recognize was that Chiron detested to be lonely, and he felt that loneliness most deeply during Yule. Those he wouldn’t truly call friends were far too busy with cooking and decorating and gift-giving, and Chiron saw no place in it for himself, so he hated Yule, and he hated Winter Solstice, and he couldn’t wait until the holiday passed and everything was back to normal again.
