So, has anyone had any really bad experiences with therapists?

PostPosted: Sat Mar 19, 2005 11:59 am

Well, as you already know, I got sent to some scary psychologist lady by our Y6 teacher which made me hate psychologists, concelors and therapists for about 2 years after. Nice of them to try and help, don't you think?

Have you ever had a bad experience with your therapist? Your old one got a different job, didn't she? What's the new one like? *is a nosy b***h*

I'm happy I don't have therapy to have bad experiences in. sweatdrop

I had a lady who overcharged for doing nothing. It was when I was a lot younger, probably 9. I sat there and drew pictures and she never minded. She just sat there. I don't remember ever talking in those sessions.
And then the lady I have currently really isn't a doctor. She is really weird though. She's into all of these visualizations things and she brings up things I don't want to talk about.

I haven't had a therapist, but I've seen both counselors at my college for different reasons. Neither of them were particularly helpful, but atleast I wasn't paying them.

The first one, who I saw during my Freshman year, due to roommate and adjustment issues, was psychodynamic, and he kept trying to blame my problems with my roommate on my issues with my father (which aren't the same at all, and aren't all that big, either). He basically just frustrated me, and after I ended up moving to another room, I stopped seeing him.

The second one, who I spoke to briefly about Asperger's Syndrome, demonstrated to me that she had very little and rather stereotypical knowledge of the disorder, and also steered the topic to other things entirely, rather than asking me any questions that would have helped me respond in a more thorough manner. Since she didn't know what she was talking about, I haven't gone back to see her, either.

Oh my goodness, yes! Mostly with a mental health services agency called "Seattle Mental Health." I had to hop around their diseased system from therapist to therapist before I found out that insight-oriented therapy can actually be harmful to people with Schizophrenia, so I switched to a different agency where therapy wasn't required in order to get medications.

I could rant for hours about how terrible my therapists were, and why. But, I think I will just make the main point. Two, count them, two of the therapists knew so little about my mental-illness that they thought that Schizophrenia is caused by a traumatic childhood incident. They actually tried to convince me that my parents had done something horrible to me that I couldn't remember. This is a total myth about Schizophrenia that was disproved many decades ago. It was a terrible thing for them to do to me, because then I started doubting my parents' love, and my parents are a very important part of my support system. If those therapists had read even a pamphlet about Schizophrenia, they would know that they were horribly in the wrong.

Everyone, if you get a therapist that you dislike, for whatever reason, switch to a new one. And keep switching if you have to. There's no reason why you should let anyone jeapordize your recovery just because they're a "professional."

eek

*hug*

Man, that is disturbing. I mean, Schizophrenia's pretty common, and they don't know about it. What's worse is that they are doctors trying to help you by talking a load of bollocks. I've had normal doctors talking bollocks, I suppose, though. Though they did offer to make sure there was nothing seriously wrong with me.

The new one is a twit. He's made me even worse, honestly. I've been cutting myself up since I've seen him, he just makes me so angry...

My old therapist decided to refer me to the social services because my dad couldn't make it to an eating disorder's assessment last December...that was quite irritating considering I have a severe hatred for social workers putting their noses into things which should not concern them...it's like, "go away! You can't actually do anything useful, you moron".

I find that therapists always have to find some huge reason for even the simplest of things...like, in family therapy, my dad was moaning at me because I forgot to wash up the breakfast things that morning. I explained that I meant to do it but I just ended up procrastinating and then the therapist came up with this whole theory that I want to be a little child, it's like, what!?

I wouldn't see someone like that again either.

Oh God! That's awful, really awful.

Definitely agree with you on that one...I'm changing my therapist after Easter. I just cannot stand this man.

I have only just head about him and already I want to hit him. I'm very happy your changing at easter.

People like to blame young people's problems on their parents. Which is really insulting, imho. Even MrRaw! I went all weird once because I had like 2hrs sleep the night before, and I forogt where I was and couldn't think right and he sorta found me. I said I didn't know why I was standing outside the Music Block but I would go to my lesson. Loz said he asked you all if you knew of anything that was going on in my family! eek Memory loss -> Family arguments ???? WTF???

Yeah, it was completely unhelpful and actually harmful to me for a while. I think that kind of dangerous misinformation on the part of so-called educated professionals should be illegal. I mean, anyone who has taken an introductory Psychology class should know what those folks didn't.

Way to go! Yeah, there's no reason we should have to put up with crap from people who are paid to provide services.

I think I'm changing my therapist now. I haven't seen her for about a month now. I don't like her.

Yeah, I understand that.

In my case, it was the whole Freudian thing. My father is always telling me what to do and criticizing me, and my counselor suggested that I was putting myself in that subservient role with my roommate, as well. He suggested that I *need* someone to harass me, basically. I told him he was full of it stare .

Hmm...

3rd grade: Put on Ritalin for supposed ADD, mother threatened with child abuse reports for not forcing me to take it

7th grade: A really dumb therapist. "So your mom died?" "Yea" "Do you want to talk about it?" "No" "You have to or you're not leaving this room." "Okay." "What are you feeling?" "Annoyed" She ordered me to come back for 6 months........which luckily, my dad didn't force

8th grade: dx'ed with ADHD, put on Adderall XR and trazadone. Kept increasing dosage until I was starting to act nuts

9th grade: Admitted to psych. hospital after suicide attempt (which I strongly suspect was from mood swings due to Strattera). Workers there repeatly restrain and isolate me in the 'room' for attempting to comfort a fellow patient. Isolation room was filthy and recked of urine. I was left in there for hours at a time, despite not being violent. Punished for minor infractions: not eating fast enough, not 'confessing enough' in group therapy, and for a 'hostile attitude'. Thank whatever that I only spent 10 days there. During the day, I was fine. Morning and evening had the bad people who treated us horribly.

Finally, I have my current therapist who I like a lot! She's an expert on Asperger's Syndrome and consults with me about treatment and other things, not just forcing them.

This thread is disturbing! The world must really need more therapists if they employ idiots like that. gonk

Caffinated - Whenever people ask stupid questions, like that "So your mom died?" I always feel like being subtly sarcastic back and see how logn it takes them to realise. It isn't a good idea though, but don't you wonder how she'd react if you said "No..." and looked really shocked. xd
