So why is he so popular?
He's just a puppet for Jhonen to vent some one-liners out of his mind and waiting for anyone who loves his absurdist sense of humor to take the bait and obsess over.
I personally am fond of ZIM since a lot of humor goes into him but it's delivered in a real way, not just some lazy one liners. So why do people direct their attention on GIR instead of focusing on more purposeful humor than just "I GOT MONKEYS IN ME!"?
I don't hate GIR at all, infact I'll always hold a special place in my heart for that character because he's made me laugh out loud on many occasions, don't get me wrong, it's just I feel the other characters don't get enough spotlight.
What do you think?

hmmm good point... however I believe that gir is ment to be a more extreame and present look at humanity's lack of common sence. Also he is used to point out zim's stupidness and lack of the ability to use gir as an almost perfect model of the people in the world of Zim.

I totally agree. biggrin I love Gir, he's awesome, but the other main characters have a better, more clever (at times ninja ) kind of humor that I prefer to non sequiturs (I still LOVE non sequiturs, though heart ).

well gir is zims robot and there would be a big hole if he wasn't there so gir does have a point..and plus he's adorable..lol

gir is what is called "humor relief" , destracting from all the technical, and totally serious happenings (sarcastic)

gir is just comic relief. now i love gir and he's one of my favorite characters, but the gir groupys just get me annoyed by repeating the same quotes OVER AND OVER AGAIN!

I agree, however, I don't particulary care, because he is hilariously funny. Whenever I right a comic, my characthers are pointlessy random. But my friends still laugh at them. It's not story lining that counts in a cartoon. It's laughter rating.

GIR doesn't have a lot of depth on purpose xd
The second line of your post is where you stated his purpose. The entire reason why GIR is there is to be the comic relief when things get serious (great example is a lot of the moments in "Germs") or to just be silly and/or stupid. Like backstage dancers to a big pop idol. They're there to add to the emphasis of the main attraction. They might end up dancing a little better than the main person and get some attention themselves, but back-up dancers, like GIR, are just there to be seen and look cute.
GIR also makes people say, "I guess Zim isn't that stupid... eek " And this is normally after a one liner that GIR said xd (good example of this is near the beginning of "Bad, Bad Rubber Piggy")

You see what everyonee missses is the obvious comic purpose of GIR. If You've seen every episode, you can find out alot about GIR (i.e. He loves Waffles, Tacos, Moose, Monkeys and Dacing), but atcually, he is only there to help Zim out of situations. I you've seen the first episode, then you know he is supposed to be a SIR, but he isn't so he is manly there so the show doesn't turn all serious. Go GIR!!!!

Zim is funny but it seems there is more to Gir than meets the eye. It the alien baby episode Gir is playing with the machine that makes you stupid, when Gir is doing that it gives Zim an idea of how to stop the super baby. Or something real bad could happen. Such as taking out a tracking device to make room for the cupcakes. So Zim and Gir are lost in the city surrounded by(gasp!) humans. Which leads to the police thinking Zim is a bankrobber. Maybe Gir is plotting.. >.> <.<

What do you think? hes hot cause he doesnt make you think hes a fun character hes spontanius stupid and silly and everyone likes the letter s therefore gir+the letter s= GREATNESS

I believe that GIR, for all his perceived stupidity, knows more about the nuances of human culture than Zim does. Information about the enemy is key to defeating said enemy, and all Zim does is think about large-scale annihilation. GIR eats tacos and goes to raves with his friends, where he learns more about the human drive than the Irken learns from the safety of his labs.
But GIR can be pitifully useless at times, too. Spreading germs around the house with his friend Pig (how does he understand that little piggy?), leaving the guidance chip at home for his cupcake, helping Gaz save her brother instead of destroying her, etc. He also has his useful moments, like with the rubber piggy.
All in all, though, GIR is just a little robot that provides big laughs in an otherwise dark children's show. Personally, I like the demented SIR Unit, but I won't go overboard with his quotes or actions like many others I've seen in the guild. There are far too many "GIR love" threads and not enough love threads for the other characters? What about the skoolkids? What about the stock characters? Don't they deserve love, too?
...Okay, I've finished ranting. Breathe easier.
