I'm writing a story set in Scotland, and I was wondering if anyone could help me understand the Scottish school system? Specifically, secondary schools -- from what I've gathered on Wikipedia it seems a lot different from the system used in the rest of Britain.

So: what years are there? What age are the pupils in each year? What important exams do you do? What's the typical leaving age? Etc etc...

Also, do any Scottish schools (still?) use prefects? We have a few of them here in Northern Ireland, but since our school system seems based more on the English model than the Scottish one, I don't suspect that counts for anything.

So what is your story going to be about? (No idea how the school system works sorry.)

When I get a chance i'll double check with my Fiance, but I know it goes Primary then Secondary then Universery (college). There isn't a middle school or Junior High, that's still Primary. So roughly guessing 1-8th year primary, then secondary 9th-11th year? Ugh...i'll ask him, k? I know they leave school earlier as well, I believe 16...but i'll double check.

Sixteen would be your tenth year though, wouldn't it? I thought at sixteen you left for another two year school but perhaps I'm wrong. And if so, I have NO IDEA what that school is called.

You'll have to let us know how your story goes!

I think the exams you take at school in Scotland are called 'Lowers' and 'Highers' as opposed to G.C.S.E's and A Levels/AS and A2 levels you take in England.
