UNDER CONSTRUCTION LIKE WHOA. IF YOU POST I WILL BE A SAD PANDA.
Okay, so! I have decided to do an "astrology 101" thread. I have been studying astrology (as much as an undergrad has time to study other things) for about three or four years now. I am not an expert, but I know more than the average Joe on the street who just knows his sun sign and some stereotypes.
For any more biographical information about me, check my profile.
I work with the Western Tropical zodiac; I use the Placidus system of houses. (I will get into what this means in a moment.) I have found that more involved knowledge of astrology is invariably helpful with any esoteric endeavor: rituals, spells, Tarot readings. And so...here I am!
And what I plan to cover:
*WTF is a natal chart, mate?! *A short short history of Western astrology and various differences in practices *The 12 signs: their characteristics, attributes, and mythology *The 10 luminaries: their jobs, roles, and mythology *The 12 houses: their functions, associations and meanings *Aspects: what they are, how they shape the chart, specific formations *Maybe stuff on Chiron and the nodes of the moon, if I get the time.
Yeah, that's a lot. I have a tendency to really lecture about things I'm interested in, I tend to be a "professor" like that. But please feel free to ask me any questions, I'll do my best to answer them or at least try to point you in the right direction. 3nodding

REALLY NIFTY FANTASTICAL SOURCES THAT ARE NIFTY AND FANTASTIChttp://www.astro.com --> the site I use most often, does up free charts (even without registering!) and, more importantly, is incredibly accurate http://community.livejournal.com/astrology --> if you have a LiveJournal, I highly recommend joining this group, there are a variety of users with a range of expertise levels, so there are always at least a few people to answer your questions, and all are very nice and patient! http://www.cafeastrology.com --> Free articles on basically everything ever. Same as the Bob Marks links below. http://www.bobmarksastrologer.com --> basically goes over everything I'm going to mention, but obviously his interpretation of things, not mine. Also, I find his reaction to everything Cancerian a little childish and insulting (being a Cancer sun myself), but otherwise helpful And as for dead tree versions...The Only Astrology Book You'll Ever Need, Joanna Martine Woolfolk. A good beginner's introduction to astrology, with at least an introduction to all of the important parts of astrology (all of the luminaries, the houses, major aspects, how to cast a chart by hand, etc). Not the ONLY book you'll need, not by a long shot, but one of the best beginner books out there, IMO. The Watkins Astrology Handbook, Lyn Birkbeck. This is another beginner's book, much the same as Woolfolk's, though perhaps a bit smaller in scope. Chart Interpretation Handbook: Guidelines for Understanding the Essentials of the Birth Chart, Stephen Arroyo and Jerilynn Marshall. Not quite a beginner's book, but a good complement to begginer texts like Brikbeck's or Woolfolk's. Planets in Aspect: Understanding Your Inner Dynamics, Robert Pelletier. This is an older text (originally published in 1974), that focuses entirely on aspects. This is another text best used in conjunction with a beginner's book like Woolfolk's or Birkbeck's. I will probably add to this list as I buy more books or as I touch on more topics in the rest of the thread.

WTF is a natal chart, mate?!A natal chart looks something like this: Of course, using different software will get you different looking charts. The charts from alabe.com look more like this: What you prefer is a method of aesthetics. I prefer the first. They both record the position of the planets in the sky at the moment of your birth (well, kind of. I'll get into Tropical versus Sidereal in a moment). Look at all of that! This is why to think you are only your sun sign is misleading--there is much more going on there, than where the sun is.

The 12 Signs: Their characteristics, attributes, and mythology.Aries KeywordsWillful, beginnings, initiative, courage, energy ProfileKelli Fox The Astrological Symbol of Aries is the Ram. Like the popular conception of the Ram, Aries people are able to accomplish many things by sheer energy and force of will: "ramming" their way to their goals. In this way, Aries exemplifies the Cardinal Quality assigned to it. Arians can be blunt, and they are bold and strong. Within the Zodiac, Aries is opposite Libra, the Scales of Balance, so Aries tend to be about self and ego rather than the balance between people. They are self-contained, and sometimes selfish, but they are not loners. Aries is ruled by the Planet Mars. In ancient Roman mythology, Mars (and his Greek equivalent, Ares) was the God of War. He was bold, aggressive, energetic, and courageous. On the negative side, he was impulsive and compulsive, quick-tempered, and he could give in to anger and a will for destruction. Mars rules both Aries and Scorpio; Aries is the masculine (day) aspect of Mars and Scorpio is the feminine (night). Both Signs are associated with war: Aries is on the front lines and Scorpio is the strategist. Mars was active and high-spirited, full of physical energy and vitality; and the Aries-born reflect his leadership and initiative. They are strongly independent and determined, and have the physical stamina to stay their course. They tend to be very competitive, and may sometimes seem arrogant, domineering, or intolerant. But all these qualities make Aries the natural choice to initiate projects and get things started. They are adept at "taking the ball and running with it," and projects tend to progress quickly under their guidance. But a well-run project may become boring for Aries, and they can lack follow-through and lose interest before it's completed. Many successful Aries learn to discipline themselves to see their projects through to completion. The Element associated with Aries is Fire. Fire Signs are physical: they tend to respond to the world through action, rather than practicality, intellect, or emotion. When presented with a new project or idea, their innate enthusiasm and need for challenge cause them to jump in right away, leading the way. One of their great skills is reaching beyond normal limitations. Occasionally their tendency for haste and hurry can get them into trouble if they don't think things through carefully enough, and this can lead to frustration. At times, people can think they are brash, rude, and inconsiderate. But Aries is only doing what the Ram's nature tells them to do. As soon as they discover a new project, all else is forgotten! Arians tend to want what they want and when they want it. Aries need to accept that this isn't always possible, and stop butting their heads, Ramlike, into the nearest wall. This is a valuable lesson that enables them to develop their understanding of themselves. But because of the ego that can manifest itself in Aries, some Rams may feel that they are the center of the universe. Aries who wish to develop themselves learn that they are part of the larger order of all people. Taurus
KeywordsSensual, steadfast, patient, inertia, talents, wealth ProfileKelli Fox Taurus is the second Sign of the Zodiac. Moving beyond the birth and first realization of Self represented by Aries, Taurus begins to physically explore the world. As such, possessions and physical touch are very important to Taureans. They tend to be richly sensual, enjoying the good things in life and the physical pleasures that come with them. Taurus is the Sign of the Physical. As the second Sign, Taurus also rules the second House: the House of Money and Possessions. The Astrological Symbol of Taurus is the Bull. The term "bull-headed" applies to Taureans in both its positive and negative connotations, and Taurus exemplifies the Fixed Quality assigned to it. They are among the strongest Signs when it comes to getting things done because of their reliable persistence in moving toward completion of projects. On the other hand, they can be very stubborn and argumentative. Within the Zodiac, Taurus is opposite Scorpio, the Sign of group possessions, so Taureans tend to be about personal assets rather than group or family holdings. They can be self-indulgent, even greedy, but they are immensely practical and stable. Taurus is ruled by the Planet Venus. In ancient Roman mythology, Venus (and her Greek equivalent, Aphrodite) was the Goddess of Love, Beauty, and Pleasure. She represented joy, happiness, and appreciation of beautiful things. On the negative side, her appreciation for sweets and luxury could result in overindulgence, and she could be materialistic. Venus rules both Taurus and Libra. Taurus is the feminine, or night, aspect of Venus; Libra is the masculine, or day. Both Signs have a great appreciation for beauty: Taurus focuses on the beauty of objects, and Libra prefers the beauty of other people. Taureans have a great love for culture. It's important to them to feel good. They often maintain extensive art collections are tend to be artistic themselves, sometimes through singing. They enjoy partnership and marriage, and use their charm -- as well as their focused perseverance -- to work toward harmony and personal security. Their sentimental, loyal, and romantic nature is sometimes wounded when they are contradicted or given orders. The Element associated with Taurus is Earth. Earth Signs are practical: they tend to respond to the world by examining the worth of each possible response, rather than through physical action, intellect, or emotion. One of their great skills is their ability to follow through and complete projects that others may have abandoned through boredom or because it was too difficult. Taureans are extremely patient and dependable. Their ambition ensures that they are both hardworking and helpful to others. Because of their association with Earth and their general focus on building things, many Taureans are skilled gardeners. Taureans tend to be even tempered and solid citizens. Their need for physical pleasure can lead to an overemphasis on money and possessions to the point of materialism, but their innate conservatism ensures that they are cautious and practical rather than extravagant. They may be more focused on status than they should be, and they may be perceived as snobs. However, despite their opinionated appearance, they tend to be tolerant and gentle, and they are always dependable. GeminiKeywordsCommunicative, flighty, witty, thinking, hooked on information ProfileKelli Fox Gemini is the third Sign of the Zodiac. Moving beyond the physical exploration of Taurus, Gemini examines the world through intellect. They are fascinated with gathering as much information as possible, and their facility as communicators -- both written and verbal -- arises from this need. Bright and quick-witted, people born under Gemini display great imagination and tend to be very expressive. They love to learn. As the third Sign, Gemini also rules the third House: the House of Communication. The Astrological Symbol of Gemini is the Twins. Like twins, Geminis often have a dual nature and are skilled at seeing both sides of a problem, but they may also be fickle and restless. They are changeable and sometimes noncommittal. In this way, Gemini exemplifies the Mutable Quality assigned to it. They are adaptable and able to tackle multiple tasks simultaneously, and they know how to reason with people, but they may lack follow-through or seem ungrateful. Within the Zodiac, Gemini is opposite Sagittarius, the Sign of Philosophy. While Sagittarius tends to have one major interest that is studied deeply, Gemini people tend to have many different interests they study in less detail. They love to learn, and are analytical and versatile, but their study may be more superficial than in-depth. Gemini is ruled by the Planet Mercury. In ancient Roman mythology, Mercury (and his Greek equivalent, Hermes) was the Messenger God. He was associated with travel and transportation. He was a communicator, quick-witted and inventive, but he could also be a smooth-talker and get bored easily. As a Planet, Mercury is androgynous; Gemini is the masculine (or day) half and Virgo the feminine (or night). Both Signs rule by words and logic, not emotion: Gemini is interested in communication as a way of making friends and learning, while Virgo is more focused on the analytical side, understanding what people are really saying. Mercury's role as communicator is exemplified in Gemini. People born under the Twins are charming and congenial, and they often have many friends and acquaintances in all areas of their lives. If they aren't careful, they may appear to be scheming or gossipy. Their facility in adapting to new challenges may seem like opportunism. Their interest in numerous subjects shows they are adaptable and curious, but they may seem like they lack concentration of have difficulty making decisions. Geminis who learn to focus and use their intellect in one area, instead of fidgeting, tend to be very successful. The Element associated with Gemini is Air. Air Signs are intellectual: they tend to respond to the world through intellect, rather than physical action, practicality, or emotion. When presented with a new project, their mental abilities kick in and they join the group enthusiastically. While they don't tend to be leaders, their facility for abstract reasoning and broad-minded outlook enables Geminis to make strong contributions to projects they work on. Their logic and objectivity may help them see past roadblocks caused by emotional conflicts among others, but their intellectual orientation may seem cold and impractical to some. It is important for Geminis to learn that their love of knowledge can be compromised by their short attention span, but their awareness and intellectual approach to life can assist them. As the Twins, Gemini is the Sign of brothers and sisters as well as communication. They often remain youthful and lighthearted for their whole lives. Cars and short trips are also ruled by this Sign, and many Geminis are mechanically inclined. They are more likely to be ambidextrous than other Signs, and can be inconsistent. Because they are "of two minds," people born under Gemini may tend to shift interests and seem scattered and high-strung. Their many interests, however, makes them entertaining and stimulating conversationalists with a carefree and unpredictable twist. Cancer Leo Virgo Libra Scorpio Sagittarius Capricorn Aquarius Pisces

The 10 Luminaries (or, Who Does What)
The Sun
The Sun is the most prominent figure in astrology as people (at least in America) know it today, mainly due the popularity of horoscopes (think Sydney Omarr and the like).
The Sun, in short terms that I'll expand on in another edit, is your core ego. It is the broad strokes of your personality, and how you interpret information. It is considered today to still be the number one factor in shaping your personality, for the most part, though equivalent weight is given to the moon and the Ascendant. Think of it like the shape of a vase on a potter's wheel: the basic shape is done, but it can still be altered, glazed, painted, etc so that not all with that shape are exactly the same.
That's a rather poor analogy, but it'll do for now.
The Sun has also been said to be an influence into your relationship with your father and men in your life, but that may be up for debate. In this case, the Sun shares a similar role with Mars.
The Sun rules Leo and is exalted in Aries. It is in detriment in Aquarius and fallen in Libra.
The Moon
If the Sun is your core ego, the Moon represents your more hidden aspects. Instead of being how you consciously interpret information, for example, it is how you instinctively react to situations and how you feel emotionally about them. "Emotions" is probably the best keyword for this luminary. It's biggest role is shaping your inner life, and also how you emotionally relate to others: family, friends, and loved ones. As a companion to the Sun, the Moon often relates to mothers and women, and can influence their role (and your reaction to them) in your life. Venus is another factor in this.
The Moon is the fastest luminary in the sky. It goes through the whole zodiac in about 28 days, staying about two and a half days in each sign. If you find yourself a decent almanac (hell, even Llewylln's Witches Calendar thingy will do, though there are also calendars just for astrology), it'll give you what sign the moon is in each day. Being cognizant of this can be a big help in the timing of your magic, in addition to keeping track of the phases. Keeping a "moon journal," where you note the signs and phases and events and energy of the day, is a helpful way to get in touch with this energy.
Also with the moon, there is something called "void of course" to worry about. This is a time when the moon isn't making an aspect to any other planets; what exactly this means will be covered in the aspects section. For now, just bear in mind that whenever you want to start an important project or do a spell, you should check online or in a good astrology almanac to see if the Moon is void of course or not (since you won't be able to tell by looking at the sky). Or make a note of the dates in this table and keep them with you:
http://www.skyviewzone.com/vocmoon.htm#voctbl
The Moon rules Cancer and is exalted in Taurus. It's in detriment in Capricorn and fallen in Scorpio.
Mercury
Mercury is all about thinking. It represents how our thinking works, the manner in which we express ourselves to others, logic, and the mind in general. Because the orbit of Mercury is inside that of Earth's (think about the solar system for a minute...), it is always close by the Sun, and therefore the Sun sign--it is either in the preceding, same, or subsequent sign as the Sun. (That is, an Aries sun can only have a Pisces, Aries, or Taurus Mercury.) Mercury is also associated with technology and all of our modern forms of communication: the internet, telephones, television, etc.
There are also periods known as Mercury retrogrades, when Mercury moves backwards in the sky. Ancient astronomers and astrologers took this to be part of any planet's given path (all the planets [never the Moon, since it orbits the Earth] go retrograde at one point or another, but since Mercury moves the fastest it happens the most often), but of course we know now that it's because the Earth is actually in orbit--Mercury only appears to move backwards because the Earth's orbit is not entirely in synch with Mercury's.
During these periods, communications are said to break down. There's an increase of computer malfunctions and mechanical breakdown during this time, as well as verbal miscommunication and misunderstanding. Much like when the Moon goes Void of Course, it's recommended that you hold off on starting any new ventures or contracts until Mercury goes direct (starts moving forward again). Unless, as the joke goes, you are starting a repair business. =P
Mercury retrogrades are good times for anything with "re" in it, basically: repairing, reflecting, reconsidering, reevaluate...etc. It's a time to look inward and spend some time on yourself before you go back into the world.
Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo. It is exalted in Aquarius. It is in detriment in Sagittarius and Pisces, and fallen in Leo.
Venus
"Bringer of harmony." That's the subtitle of Gustav Holst's Venus, part of his musical series on all nine planets. And it's a pretty apt description of what Venus does. Like Mercury, Venus is inside the earth's orbit and, as such, can never appear in the sky more than 47 degrees away from the sun.
Venus often represents what kind of people we attract, and how we attract people in general, romantically and otherwise. Oftentimes, you'll find yourself attracted to people whose sun, moon, or rising is the same sign as your Venus. Likewise, your Venus sign (and also house placement) indicates what role you play in relationships, or what it means to you to be a friend/lover/business associate etc. Venus (along with Mars) has a lot to do with sexuality and romantic compatibility: for women, it represents their own sexuality, and what they like in bed and romance; for those attracted to women, it represents the kind of woman that gets their motor running. So there's people-harmony.
Venus also rules the arts and sensual/aesthetic things in general: pleasant music, good food, beautiful art, luxurious fabrics (silk sheets, anyone?), poetry and literature, etc. The kind of stuff that is very easy to enjoy (think of cordon bleu or Rennaissance art). Venus' lesson is for us to remember to stop and smell the roses; take time to enjoy the finer things of life.
Venus rules Taurus and Libra, and it is exalted in Pisces. It is in detriment in Scorpio and Aries, and fallen in Virgo.
Mars
Named after the Roman god of war, the Red Planet can be a fiesty one. Mars is associated with violence, anger, and fighting, on a superficial level. On a deeper level, it's also ambition, physical energy and vitality, and drive. My own speculation is that Mars also plays a role in how we approach problems and challenges, but I haven't read anything to back that up, so please don't quote me. Mars is Venus' consort, and thus represents the other half of the relationship. Thus, for men it represents their sexuality, and for those who are attracted to men, it represents what kind of man they're attracted to. Mars, in addition to the Sun, plays a role in how the native relates to men in general. You can also add Saturn in there, and begin to talk specifically about "father figures."
Mars rules Aries, and traditionally Scorpio (which has a modern ruler of Pluto). It is exalted in Capricorn, in detriment in Libra, and fallen in Cancer. Note that while Scorpio has a modern ruler of Pluto, many astrologers and certain specific branches of astrology will often still use Mars as a ruler for both signs.

The 12 Houses: Their functions, associations and meanings. (Where does stuff happen?)
What are houses?
If you look back at the post with the natal charts, you'll notice the lines that divide up the circle into twelve sections, like a pie. Those are called houses. They represent different areas in life. As different signs fall on the cusp (the beginning of the house--if the line at the "beginning" of a house is inside a sign, the house is said to be ruled by that sign).
If you look at the chart with your place of birth as right in the middle, the horizontal lines represent the ground. On the left is the eastern horizon, on the right is the west. The rest of the lines are "imaginary," and calculated slightly differently in different house systems. But there are always twelve, and they are all associated with a respective sign of the zodiac (the first house is associated with Aries, the second with Taurus, and so on). But bear in mind that they are not exactly equivalent.
You'll note the zodiac in a circle on the outside the houses. They will move around, depending on the time of day--as the sign that is on the first house, or eastern horizon, changes when the earth spins on its axis. But they always stay in order.
The First House
The first house, also known as the rising sign, as well as the Ascendant, or AC, is probably one of the most noticeable in terms of observable personality. Indeed, among astrology circles, the most common way to "identify" yourself is to give your sun, moon, and rising sign--Cancer/Pisces/Pisces, Aquarius/Leo/Capricorn, etc. The first house is associated with the sign Aries, the beginner of the zodiac.
The rising sign is rather tricky to define. I think of it as something like the glasses you use to see the world, or your "psychic skin," the filter between outside energies and yourself. On a more mundane level, the rising sign (and any planets in the first house, or close to the cusp of the first house) can affect how you look as well. It's a house of beginnings, how you start things, childhood, etc. When interpreting a chart, it's helpful to look at the planet associated with the rising sign and see what kind of role it plays within the chart--what house it falls in, aspects it makes to other planets, etc. That will point towards what is important for the person (or situation) in question. In a nutshell: personality and predispositions.
The Second House
The second house moves from beginnings to doing something with that beginning: your own possessions and wealth, and the talents you have for earning such things, as well as what you value--including yourself. It is associated with Taurus, the earner of the zodiac.
The Third House
The third house then communicates those things--how do you use them, how are you smart? It is the house of communication, but also associated with intelligence, and what and who is immediately around you: siblings and neighbours, as well as early education. It's also related to short journeys, like weekend jaunts to the neighboring town or even week-long vacations over the border, that your resources in the second house enable you to take. (Longer trips don't come into the picture until the ninth house.) It is associated with Gemini, the communicator of the zodiac.
The Fourth House
The fourth house brings all of this communicating and networking together into a cohesive unit: the family. The fourth house, at least in the Placidus system, is known as the Imum Coeli, which is Latin for "root of the sky." It rules foundations, the family, where we start out in life and also where we end up towards old age, as well as what we need to feel secure and generally "at home." It's usually associated with parents, though there isn't any consensus as to whether it's the father, mother, or both. My own take on it is, since the IC is the natural house of Cancer, the archetypal mother of the zodiac, then it's more appropriate to associate it with the mother. However, ancient astrologers actually associated this house with the father. So.
The Fifth House
The fifth house then breaks away from this organization again and focuses on the individual, known as The House of Pleasure. What makes you an individual? What do you love, what makes you stand out as you? These things are the property of the fifth house: hobbies, fun and games, gambling, love affairs, the arts, and also children. While the first house is personality and traits, the fifth house is what those traits do. It's associated with Leo, the child of the zodiac.
The Sixth House
The sixth house is where the individual now goes to work for others. This is a house of subservience, of serving, and employment. It also represents the daily and mundane things we must do so that we can get by on a day-to-day basis (read as: chores). It's also related to bodily/physical health. It's associated with Virgo, the maintainer of the zodiac.

Aspects: What they are and how they shape the chart.
Aspects are the angles between the planets as they are noted on the natal chart.
You'll remember from your geometry that a circle has three hundred and sixty degrees. So does the circle in the Zodiac, like any other circle. Since 360 degrees divided by 12 signs is 30, each sign has 30 degrees in it. This is useful to remember when looking at a chart and trying to count degrees, for example (using my own natal chart), between Mars at 20* Capricorn and Jupiter at 22* Pisces, there are 62 degrees. Certain numbers of degrees between planets are considered important, and you note that in a chart by drawing lines between the points (see the example chart).
Aspects are what give a natal chart finesse. You can cover a lot of ground with Sun/moon/planet placements, as well as where the cusps of the various houses fall, but it is with the aspects that you can start to get really deep into the psyche of the chart, so to speak.
For example, let's say that you are a Cancer sun, with a Taurus moon and Libra rising, with Mars also in Cancer, two degrees from the sun. We can paint a very broad portrait starting with the sun, and getting more and more specific as we come down the list, but until we get to the aspect of Mars conjunct the Sun, we may be overlooking a very vital part of the person's personality, or unable to explain why they are sometimes much more outgoing, aggressive, competitive and energetic than one would expect. But once we see and note that part of the chart, what was once an anomaly now makes perfect sense.
Now, there are (generally speaking) two kinds of aspects: easy (sometimes also called soft) and hard. You'll notice most of the aspects on the example chart are either red or blue. The red ones are the hard aspects; the blue ones are easy. The important thing to remember is that any aspect, whether hard or easy, indicates a relationship between the planets involved that is important to you, whether for good or for ill.
Hard Aspects
These are squares (90* [again, hello geometry!]) and oppositions (180*). The relationship between the planets is primarily stressful; they are not working in harmony, but are rather conflicted. The keyword for these two is friction. But friction makes fire, doesn't it? And so can hard aspects provide energy for projects. If you have Mercury square your Moon, you might find it hard to communicate (Mercury) your feelings (Moon)--but you also have the same impetus to work to overcome it and become skilled at it (even if it's always a difficult task).
The opposition is sometimes considered as not QUITE as stressful as the square; as somehow "looser." This is perhaps because the opposite signs of the Zodiac (Aries/Libra, Cancer/Capricorn) are often paired together as they rule similar-but-opposite things. (Aries the individual, Libra the parternship, etc). While they are different in many ways, in some ways they are concerned with exactly the same thing.
